Free Music Notes for Classic Nursery RhymesFree Music Review: Wonderfully Complete Collection by Hit: 5 Stars
This is our FAVORITE children's CD. (In addition to Kids' Songs to Sing and Sing Along )My 17 month old LOVES this and I don't go crazy listening to it over and over and over.
Between Susie Tallman's collection of cd's I don't think there is a single nursery rhyme or song that is missed! Very common to a little more obscure. Although I grew up with my grandmother reading nursery rhymes to me and recognized all but one on the disc. (So they aren't terribly obscure)
She presents them in very fun arrangements. Lovely vocals and a nice mix of children and adult voices. (The non-stop kids choral sing-along style tends to grate on my nerves after about 2 songs -- If you prefer all kids singing then you won't like this cd) None of the arrangements are over the top. (With the exception of rap-like Hickory Dickory Dock-- which honestly is NOTHING like the other arrangements found on this disc) There are many spoken word nursery rhymes interspersed with the songs. ( I liked this because I have forgotten words to many nursery rhymes that I loved as a kid!)
Bottom line: If you are looking for a cd that contains all the classics, presented in a fun way, this is an excellent disc. I'm not into the wacky, made-up new wave kids songs. But I go crazy with the kids-song, or folksy adult renditions of the classics. This is a nice blend of new take on the old.
BTW, the "English" accents mentioned previously are actually Australian. Half of the people on the cd are Australian. [...]
Free Music Review: Creative, Fun - One we ALL love to listen to over & over! Hit: 5 Stars
When we pop this CD in our car cd player, our 19-month old son smiles and giggles immediately. We play it everyday (for months now). I wasn't wild about this one at first because it wasn't traditional, as I was expecting. BUT, it has grown on all of us.Because of this CD my son very actively participates in the rhymes: he tries to sing along, imitating the range and tones of the voices ("TIP me over and POUR..ME..OUT!). When "Ten Monkeys" plays, he uses hand movement to imitate the monkeys rolling over in bed. As another reviwer pointed out, this CD does a great job of introducing children to different styles of music. And now even I love the hip-hop version of Hickory Dickory Dock. Compare it to a Disney CD and you will realize how creative and talented Susie and her friends are; you don't get the same boring, bland band of singers in each song. Testimony is in the purchase...I just bought a different CD collection at Costco which, despite the price savings, I am going to return because I am going to buy Susie's "Kids'Songs to Sing and Sing Along". We are driving across country next month and I am sure we will have more fun singing along with the Susie and Friends'version.
Free Music Review: Fun for kids, pleasing to adults Hit: 5 Stars
I personally like this CD a lot, and so does my preschooler! It is MUCH more entertaining for adults than most childrens' music. Most kids' CDs have enough mindless repetition and sickeningly sweet music to drive a normal adult insane! This one is different.
While I wouldn't call this CD sophisticated, it does a MUCH better job at keeping us grown-ups entertained. It is so much fun to sing along with in the the car!! Be warned that the collection does include one or two songs that my husband and I cannot stomach due to their sheer repetition. ("Ten Monkeys in the Bed" has all the appeal of "99 Bottles of Beer on the Wall." Use the skip button on that one!) But, the other 35 or 36 tracks are great fun!
I think what makes this CD better than average is the mixture of genres (pseudo country, "rap," lyrical readings etc.). This makes for a great deal of variety in the "feel" of the music, and keeps the CD moving. Also, there are some pretty darn cute recordings of British (Australian?) children reading the nursery rhymes out loud.
Free Music Review: The best nursery rhyme collection you'll get Hit: 5 Stars
I'm glad other people have already reviewed this, because we've had it for years and should have reviewed before now! We were given this CD for our first child, who is now 8, and all three have enjoyed it (in fact, though she wouldn't admit it, our 8 year old still thoroughly enjoys it!). This is also the only nursery rhyme CD that my wife and I don't groan when it's requested yet again!
As other people have mentioned, it combines very traditional nursery rhymes with fun interpretations of them (some are done in a number of different styles!) and fun accents (note to other reviewers, I'm British and I don't think the British accents on here are real :-) ). Perhaps most importantly, all taking part seem to be enjoying themselves, including the kids. The nursery rhymes gently wind down to bedtime songs at the end of the CD, perfect for slowing your toddler down.
A lot of nursery rhyme collections seem half-hearted at best; this one has been done with love and effort, and it shows.
Free Music Review: Excellent, Inventive, and Easy on the Parents Hit: 5 Stars
Susie Tallman's Nursery Rhymes CD is one of our favorites. The collection is full of great, catchy songs that our toddler LOVES (much bouncing in high chair, stomping on the floor, and clapping). One of our favorite aspects is the variations on the same songs--a child's voice requests, "sing it jazzy/faster/etc..." and the same song is reinterpreted. Our son loves these changes, and we think it's a great way to introduce the idea of how changes in style, tone, tempo, etc. affect music. But perhaps the most important element of the CD is that we like listening to it, too! Susie Tallman has a great voice and is an accomplished and innovative musician. Classic Nursery Rhymes fits right into our regular rotation of Bob Dylan, Tom Waits, Joni Mitchell, Cat Stevens, Ten Thousand Maniacs, Joan Osbourne, Neil Young, Fat Boy Slim, They Might Be Giants, REM, etc. etc. We put on Classic Nursery Rhymes when our friends are over--even the kind without kids. What a nice break from Rafi!!
