Free Music Review: Revenge of the Nerd!
Hit: 5 Stars

So there's this guy, you might have seen him on TV, named Clay Aiken. And he's your basic skinny, gangly, average-looking dork. Until he opens his mouth. And then he's pretty much the sexiest thing ever, because he sings like an angel. So although he didn't win the competition that brought him to our attention in the first place, his first single has been sitting comfortably on top of the charts and will probably continue to do so for a long time.

And that's funny, because the exact song keeps changing. First it was supposed to be "This is the Night", with "On the Wings of Love" as the flip side, so to speak. But on the last night of American Idol (this little singing contest he was on) he so completely blew the roof off with his cover of "Bridge Over Troubled Water" that studio execs scrambled to get it on the single; at first as the secondary song. The people would not be denied, though, and so we have "Bridge Over Troubled Water" as Clay's first step into the Pop Ocean.

His version, while not exactly what you would call subtle, just has something about it. His voice is just so beautiful, in a very unique way (In fact he was frequently told on the show that he should be on Broadway, and while it's gonna be great to have him as a Pop singer, admit that you've imagined him alone on a stage in a black cape and white mask, singing "Christine I looooove yyyyooouuu...". Admit it!).

"This is the Night" is very much along the lines of "A Moment Like This", the song last year's winner was saddled with. Clay manages to make an average song fairly catchy, despite lyrics like "Every kiss is a kiss/You can never get back". "Bridge Over Troubled Water" is much better; having the advantage of being written by a talented songwriter, and Clay sings it with genuine feeling.

So two stars for "This is the Night", four stars for "Bridge Over Troubled Water", and a hundred stars for the man himself, which for our purposes is going to average out to five stars. As Simon would say: Brilliant!

Free Music Review: A great teaser for his debut album!
Hit: 5 Stars

Clay's new CD-single makes me eager to hear more. The formerly bespectacled, freckle-faced "skinny white boy"(his words!) from North Carolina can really sing! Of course, that should come as no surprise after his highly successful stint on American Idol this past season.

Sadly, the overproduction of "Bridge Over Troubled Water" is less than perfect in that the choir tends to drown out Clay's voice, particularly during long held-out notes, but it doesn't diminish his passionate performance. On the second track of the CD-single, he offers a tender yet powerful rendition of "This is the Night." Both songs provide Clay the opportunity to showcase his wide vocal range, as well as the pure heart and soul he pours into every note. Incredibly, his voice sounds even richer on his CD-single than it did during his live performances, which I didn't think was possible.

This is one CD-single that I'll be playing often, and utilizing the repeat function on my stereo in the process. :-) I'll also be impatiently awaiting Clay's debut album, which I fervently hope will contain at least one of the songs he's written (yes, he writes music, too!).

As an aside, I thought it important to mention that Clay's fan base is comprised of tens of thousands of people worldwide, ranging in age from 8 to 80 and everywhere in between. His humble spirit, generous nature, innocence, charm, goodness, and undeniable natural talent make him irresistably endearing and loveable. His passion for life and his lack of ego make him that much more of a standout in the celebrity world. I hope he's able to emerge from his lightning-fast climb to fame completely intact and unscathed, for his self-image of being a non-celebrity is precisely why we love him so much.

Gladys Knight was correct when she said there was something magical about Clay Aiken. Come hear for yourself what she was talking about!

Free Music Review: Clay Aiken, Second To None! *****
Hit: 5 Stars

I first saw Clay Aiken - American Idol audition (by accident), there was something special about him - I didn't knew what it was. But after he sang - all I could say was WOW! I love this guy! I've been a Clay Aiken fan from that moment. I pre-ordered four of his Cds. God gave Clay a powerful, fantastic voice and he sings with tremendous passion. Thank you, Clay!!!

"Bridge Over Troubled Water": Producers - next time keep the "backgroung singers" in the "background" where they belong. Clay's beautiful voice couldn't be heard clearly enough. He doesn't need them singing as loud as he does. But I still play this CD over & over & over again. I'm addicted to Clay and his voice.

"This Is The Night": a beautiful song, destined to be a classic. He sings it extremely well. His voice range shines---Love them both.

I rate this CD with only five stars because that's all they will accept here.

Clay's talent is diverse; he hits those note beautifully. It's refreshing to finally have a singer whose voice I'm always anxious to here. Everything Clay sings is great. I didn't like the song 'Grease' before, but now I want to here Clay sing it again.

The ratings on Amazon and other Internet sites clearly show who the TRUE American Idol is. Clay has been consistently #1 for at least three weeks (#2 briefly). Various articles mention that Clay's single topped Ruben's 4 to 1 in pre-orders.

I'm anxious for his full-length CD to be released in August/September 2003. Clay's debut single is only a preview of better thing to come, a 'teaser'. Clay is going to have an amazing career. I'm proud to be his fan from the beginning. I will purchase his Cds the day of release and pre-order copies as well.

This CD and future Clay Aiken Cds are for people who want to expand their musical enjoyment. Don't stay stuck in a musical rut. Buy this CD!!! You will enjoy it.

Free Music Review: His voice is amazing!
Hit: 5 Stars

Watching Clay Aiken on "American Idol" emerge from an awkward "yokum" to the charming and professional pop singer he is now was one of the highlights of the past tv season. On finale night he sang the two songs on this CD, "This is the Night" and his stirring rendition of "Bridge Over Troubled Water" and blew me away. He gave me goosebumps with "This is the Night" and left me totally awestruck with "Bridge Over Troubled Water". The crowd reaction to the latter, as well as Simon Cowell's appraisal that that performance just may have won Clay the competition was the icing on the cake. While my reaction to these two songs will never be that amazing again, everytime I hear these songs I get blown away all over again. His voice has range, power, clarity and is always pitch perfect. And he has that indefinable "it" factor. I do agree with others who have said that the choir on "Bridge Over Troubled Waters" can be a bit overwhelming at times, but it is still a stirring and original rendition. "This is the Night" is just about perfect - and continues to give me goose bumps.

I expect Clay Aiken is going to be around for a very long time. This year "American Idol" had two winners in the finale with Ruben Studdard and Clay. While Ruben's talent is without question, I always felt he was playing it safe with his song selection during the competition and his choices for his first single continue that trend. Apparently his stategy worked, for he won. I am still waiting for him to break out and show us what he can really do - perhaps on his album. Clay, on the other hand, took chances during the competition, showing us his versatility and range. We saw him grow and improve each week. I know we will continue to see that from him in the future and I look forward to his album.
