Free Music Review: Clay... the voice of an angel
Hit: 5 Stars

First off, let me say, I am a huge Clay fan... and the first thing I did after showering, was go to get his single, I was so excited.

So, the first thing I did when I got back in the car? Popped the CD in. The first song on the single is Bridge Over Troubled Water, and the first thing you hear is the choir, just like the live version. Then, Clay's beautiful voice is heard, and it is so incredibly strong, like it was live, that it gives you chills (even after listening to it 10 times, in my case). The entire song is sung, unlike when he sang it on American Idol.

Now, his second song was his original title track for the single, and is an original, titled This is the Night. This song is very moving in my opinion, it was written well too. It fits his voice perfectly, and I don't think he could have chosen a better song to release. He hits notes, expecially when he says "Lift me up" it gives me goosebumps all over. I can see this song being the new wedding anthem, and taking over Bryan Adam's "Everything I do" as the number one song played at weddings.

I recommend this single to anyone who's a fan of great music and likes power in the voice of the person singing, because that's what Clay's voice is. Power, better yet, powerful. Not to mention it can make any woman in the world swoon over him.

Free Music Review: The Clay-Ruben comparison
Hit: 5 Stars

I am bemused by the differences in reviewing styles between Ruben Studdard and Clay Aiken. Ruben's fans spend a lot of words defending why he is better than Clay, while Clay's fans just talk about Clay. Personally speaking, Ruben has a nice, mellow voice and sings with feeling, but he had (has) phrasing problems and not much breath control. He will do well because there is a solid niche for fans of R&B, which Ruben exemplifies. It's hard not to like him or his music. He's a singer for those laid-back times.

That said, Clay has the better voice technically and musically. His voice and style are more versatile than Ruben's and therefore will fit more genres, which translates into longevity. I have a problem with most of today's pop solo artists because they have no subtlety -- every song is sung at the top of their lungs and with notes and phrasing the composer never intended. I think Clay has the capacity to buck that trend and still appeal to a hybrid audience.

Clay sings both songs on this CD well, but I agree that if the engineers remix BOTW for the album, they should tone down the backup singers. Actually, I think Clay could sing acappella and with his pure, distinct voice, make any song shine. He's sort of like an actor within a song instead of an actor within a play. He is a singer for all times.

Free Music Review: The "real" American Idol! Clay Aiken
Hit: 5 Stars

I really enjoyed the first CD single by Clay Aiken--I had rooted for him from the beginning, and really felt that vocally speaking he should have taken home the title. However, he is probably better off as he has no "title" to tie him down. His voice is amazing, and his rendition of Bridge Over Troubled Waters is powerful. He definitely makes the song his own and he really nails the ending! As a vocalist, myself, I would have to say that his voice is superb and very rich, and he sings with so much feeling! This is the Night is also a great song--it has a really different feel to it--almost reminiscent of the 80s--which of course is my generation! I really think that Clay's popularity shows that popular music in general is finally turning from "popstars with looks but no talent" to more of an appreciation for someone who can actually sing. Shame on Simon for repeatedly saying that Clay did not "look" like an American Idol, and Ruben did? Don't get me wrong, I really liked Ruben also, but the bias on the show was very evident in the final month or so of the competition. It was exciting to see that America proved Simon wrong, and Clay did so well. I really think you will enjoy this cd, and I know I can't wait for his debut album in the fall!

Free Music Review: Clay It Again!
Hit: 5 Stars

First, you must know that I am a dedicated Clay fan, a Claymate if you will. My allegiance notwithstanding, I think you will find my reviw quite helpful.

I was never a fan of Paul Simon's voice but always thought he wrote wonderful songs. On BOTW, Clay does a very good job of caressing the lyrics and really making one feel the song. If you ARE weary, and if you DO need a friend, this song will lift your spirits and make the world seem a little less dark! Clay does not over sing on this title, nor does he strain to reach any notes. Some feel the choir drowns him a little, but I think they sound good together. Look, the "skinny little white boy" more than keeps up with the gospel choir, his voice ACTUALLY stands out!

Now, TITN. I actually liked the song the first time I heard it. I think it has good lyrics and Clay does a nice job with it. I would have prefered a Diane Warren type song, in the vein of Because You Loved Me, or even the song Clay sang on AI: Could Not Ask For Me. But, TITN is perfectly fine.

If you are a dedicated Ruben fan, or like his style of music, this CD is probably not for you; if, however, you are really interested in hearing, understanding, and appreciating lyrics, then you can't go wrong with this CD.

Free Music Review: Changing the face of pop
Hit: 5 Stars

About time we got real singers in the pop world. I know there's image and all that but a good voice has always been important to me. Even when I was a teenager I only bought albums that had really good singers on them. That is probably why even when I was young I leaned toward Broadway because it was the only place to find real good singers. Sure we've had Barry Manilow, Neil Sedaka and Donny Osmond but they don't put out an album every year and they getting older. The pop world needs a whole new crop of really good male singers that yes could sing on Broadway because their voices are just that good! Much applause to Mr. Clay Aiken for this wonderful CD! Although I don't how it was mixed. Clay's voice needs to come out more. Many times they drown out his voice with the background vocals and music. Why? I'm not sure; he CAN hold his own. Hopefully with his new album coming out in September he'll have more control of how his CD sounds. Clay can really sing out there is no reason to cover that extraordinary voice. With Clay's popularity due to American Idol he has an excellent chance of changing the face of pop singers. Image is not everything. In music it's about how talented the singer is. Good luck Clay. We're rooting for you.
