Free Music Review: Great work

I'm totally perplexed by the reviewer who claimed to love the film yet when he listened to the soundtrack alone he magically didn't like it. If he liked the music when it accompanied the visuals, then the score was doing its job - working in tandem with the picture to enhance it without detracting from it.
To me, some of the "classic" hollywood composers can sometimes sound more like band leaders who are trying to make a song that can be played on its own, rather than trying to create something that helps support the base material. This is what a soundtrack SHOULD be - not some big, over the top aural cacophony that stands out and gets noticed. This is music composed by someone who understands his job, and that is to create music that makes the film BETTER. True, the score is only 30 minutes, but the film itself uses a lot of documentary style, which means you ease back on the score for those moments because you want the audience to feel like they're watching the news, which doesn't tend to have big booming orchestra playing along side it!
District 9 was an incredibly clever bit of filmmaking that was unconventional, moving, and really well done. The same can be said for this score. It's not the typical Hollywood noise. It's subtle in places, just like the film it was made for. And it works perfectly. I look forward to Clinton Shorter's next film. He's the next generation of composers who understand that sometimes, less is more.
And Jim, It's a 30 minute score but it's also NINE DOLLARS! I bought this album and absolutely loved it. I am transported back to the movie every time I listen to it. "Prawkus" is worth the nine bucks alone!
