Free Music Notes for In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth: 3Free Music Review: Still to this day... Hit: 5 Stars
Wow, what can I say? This is one of my all time favorite CDs and a ton of my friend's favorites as well. It's not hard to see why this is. Coheed & Cambria just seep with a talent that is unmatched and a genius that hardly any bands in modern times possess! The timing of Coheed's songs, in every song isn't just straight forward one-two thrash beats. The timing of the songs and transference between hard and soft parts are so masterfully pull out in their music! I really can't explain how incrediblly talented Coheed is, seriously! To go from trashing and rocking to mellow transient and yet despite the change of pace still maintain the dynamically epic feeling to the music! Good examples of such pace changes and genius arrangements can be found in "In Keeping Secrets...", "The Crowing","Cuts Marked In The March Of Men", "The Light & The Glass", and pretty much every song for that matter! Songs like "Three Evils (Embodied in love and Shadow)" (A really cool title for a song by the way), "A Favor House Atlantic" or "Blood Red Summer" you just can't help but love the right out rockage! The Velorium Camper series all envelope a sense of darkness but in different ways. "Al The Killer" gives a sense of epic yet terrified feeling, "Faint Of Hearts" is a latinish yet jazzy hurricane of emotions that end in perfection, and "Backend Of Forever" makes you feel the sense of the story's developments.
Every song bubbles over with intense talent and brilliance in the songs that each and every member has. Mike Todd plays the bass with a sense of intense feeling and emotion and it shows and he is also one of the best screamers in the biz today, Josh Eppard is one of the foremost figures in the independant drumming world and is renown for his amazing ability to play poppish or rocking and epic beats, Travis Stever's incredible and humbling talent on lead guitar mostly just is enough to make you crap your pants in amazement and delight , and dear ol' Claudio Sanchez's AWESOME voice sings with such deep conviction, pride, and zeal that it really is so very enjoyable and easy to listen and sing with and also has an obvious mastery over the guitar and honestly is one of the best guitarist and conceptual writer if not thee best in today's music scene.
( That is what I wrote in the original review, but I have to point out a few things about Claudio and Coheed in general. He is a genius songwriter and the way he writes the lyrics so well around his story is astounding. However, I'm sick and tired of "true coheed fans" always giving Claudio all of the credit. Coheed is not, I repeat NOT the back up band for Claudio Sanchez, they're all geniuses and therefore all an equal part of the band. They're all so unique and matchless in talent in so many ways it's ridiculous. However, I also said that Claudio has an awesome voice and I misled you. He does have an awesome voice, but it's not for everyone. It's exetremely high and a lot of people hate it and I did too at first, but as I will say at the end of the review, keep giving them a chance and you'll come to love it! It's definately an aquired taste, ol' Claudio's voice. So these are the things I felt I had to point out, enjoy the rest of the review if you are actually reading it and not just looking at the stars and grading this helpful or not according to your judgement.)
One of the things that is so addictive about this band is the story behind their music. I don't even know every detail of the story, and nobody but the band does really. However, just knowing the basic outline and crucial events show that this story is so cool! I really got hooked to this band not only by their incredible music but also the intelligent, deep, and incredible storyline behind the music! Don't get me wrong though, the music is where it's at! The songs and music they play is the most endearing and amazing quality about C&C! It's awesome to know that such music is played by humble and cool people too!
Coheed & Cambria remain to this day to be one of my all time favorite bands and influence so much in my own stories and music! I heard them a year or two ago and still get chills whenever I hear any of their songs they've ever written! That's something special to be treasured and Coheed is definately a precious gift to music! Their style is so uniquely them that no other band could ever be close to imitating their intelligent and new sound! It's comforting to know that there is a band out there that truly is so talented and amazing! I recommend this CD to you! I must however say that, if you don't like it at first or are not really into it as much as I am do not fret. A lot of people I know very well didn't like it at first and now are dedicated fans like I am, so have an open mind and enjoy the ultimate rockage that is Coheed And Cambria!
Peace,
Ty
Free Music Review: Great album Hit: 5 Stars
Turned out to be one of my favorites of 2004.
Here's the breakdown:
1) The Ring In Return: I'm sure this has to be here for some reason because of the crazy sci-fi backstory to this band, but it sounds ridiculously cheesy to me. I wondered what I bought when I first put this CD in and this track played. The synthesized orchestra part sounds hilarious. It sounds like someone calling a girl he likes for the first time when the girl on the phone says "hello". 3 of 5 stars for sheer silliness.
2) In Keeping Secrets Of Silent Eart: 3: This track was one of my favorites for a long time. This song showed me how good at guitar work Coheed and Cambria are. Very diverse track musically. 5 of 5 stars.
3) Cuts Marked In The March Of Men: Sweet intro lead guitar part and lead throughout the verse. Pretty whiny chorus but I'm getting used to Claudio's voice and it works for the music. The bridge in this song is killer. 4 of 5 stars.
4) Three Evils (Embodied In Love And Shadow): Hilariously cool emoish title to this song. Very very poppy and whiny. Like I said though, Claudio's voice really works for this music. I wondered what the heck these guys were talking about before I read about the sci-fi backstory with some of the lyrics on this song "sever the limbs off his torso and burn what remains. . ." 3 of 5 stars.
5) The Crowning: OK, this song has some of the sweetest guitar work I've heard in a long time. The guitar parts after "Pray you're not the only one" are frickin amazing. 5 of 5 stars.
6) Blood Red Summer: This song makes me laugh because I saw them do it acoustic on Launchcast and Claudio's hair is huge and cool looking. Very poppy and whiny, typical Coheed. 3 of 5.
7) The Velorium Camper I: Faint Of Heart: The guitar part during the verse of this song is great. I love it. This song is definitely one of my favorites. 5 of 5 stars.
8) The Velorium Camper II: Backend Of Forever: This track sort of blends in to the rest of the disc for me. It has its moments but it's never really stood out to me before. 3 of 5 stars.
9) The Verlorium Camper III: Al The Killer: The darkest track on the album. They do the weird pitch thing with the low voice a lot on it. It's kind of weird, and sort of in a funny way. SWEET lead part over the chorus. 3 of 5 stars.
10) A Favor House Atlantic: Their big hit. It's catchy. That's about all I have to say about it. Not that all strong and verrry whiny. 2 1/2 of 5 stars.
11) The Light & The Glass: Defintely the weakest track on the album. I almost always skip this one. Mostly just annoying. It's funny if you imagine Claudio singing it in your head while you're listening to it, with his huge hair and everything. 2 of 5 stars.
Hidden Track) 2113: MAKE SURE YOU LISTEN TO THIS SONG. This song is killer. I love it. I didn't know if I would at first but now it's one of my favorites. SWEET guitar work. I heart it all and I think the title of it being like the rush album 2112 is hilarious and cool. 5 of 5 stars!
Free Music Review: Incredible band, incredible album Hit: 5 Stars
There are a few things you should know before you consider anything else about Coheed & Cambria. First of all, they cannot be pidgeonholed under categories like emo or pop-punk. Anyone who actually gives them a listen will realize that 1) The songs have none of the sappy, broken-hearted lyrics that turns most people off to emo and 2) The music is far too technically accomplished and complex to be anywhere near "pop-punk."
Secondly, a number of reviewers have castigated the album because they find the lyrics "weird." Not only is this a ridiculous reason, it can be easily explained with just a little bit of investigation. Coheed & Cambria's songs follow a sci-fi story that the lead singer, Claudio Sanchez, is publishing in the form of a graphic novel series. One has already come out, but it covers only the first bit of the first album.
Finally, many people take issue with Claudio's singing voice. Yes, it is high-pitched. No, you may not like it. But don't discount it simply because others do. He has an incredible range, and is one of the few vocalists able to live up to the standards set by recorded versions of songs during live shows. It is not whiny. It is not emo. Stop branding everything in sight with inaccurate labels.
Now, regarding the album. I first saw "A Favor House Atlantic," the record's first single and arguably most popular song, on MTV. I immediately picked up the album, and was absolutely blown away. This is a concept album of an incredible scale. The pacing, transitions, variety of sound, and consistent quality create an overall polished quality that is extremely hard to pull off considering the content. Many bands these days come out with a debut album, are picked up by a major label, and then come out with a sophomore effort that, while good, is clearly overproduced. IKSSE: 3 is not one of those albums.
If there is a label that fits Coheed & Cambria, it is progressive rock, and yet their music is poppy and catchy enough to draw in fans that don't enjoy some of the mainstays of progressive rock (bands like Dream Theatre). Most of the songs have a surface addictiveness, but when you dive a bit deeper, you discover things that are indicative of a lot more than pop. I play guitar and can attest to the difficulty and intricacy of most of the riffs on this album. The band's musicianship is formidable, especially considering their age. And their live show does not betray this picture; Coheed is one of the tightest live bands around these days.
A mention of Coheed & Cambria usually produces a polarization among those present. Many can't stand Claudio's voice, and thus don't enjoy the band. Others eat it up and vehemently defend any claims against the group. I am clearly a part of the latter group. However, detached from this bias, I recommend Coheed & Cambria as a talented and professional group, and IKSSE: 3 as an incredible record that is different from anything you've ever heard. At least give it a listen before you judge.
Free Music Review: You can't write these guys off without listening to this one Hit: 5 Stars
I loved Coheed and Cambria's first album "Second Stage Turbine Blade". It only made sense that when their second, and highly anticipated follow up, album "In Keeping Secrets Of Silent Earth 3" hit stores, I bought it the day it came out. And to be honest you're going to get every cent of your money's worth for this one. Coheed have expanded their sound to an even greater dynamic on this record, and have incorporated a ton of new elements that have added some many faces to the music, it's astounding. It's no wonder these guys got so popular because of this album. However old and new CoCa fans alike should be able to agree on the fact that this is nothing short of an amazing album that will please any fan of the band.
This time around Coheed has started to try a few different things than they did on "Second Stage Turbine Blade". Some songs have gotten long and become great epics ("In Keeping Secrets Of Silent Earth 3", "The Crowing"), and some have been shortened to put emphasis on specific parts ("Blood Red Summer", "A Favor House Atlantic"). The lyrics on this album are just as astounding as the debut, and in some places even more intimate and thought provoking, although the true story being told is still somewhat hard to decipher. Musically this band has always been one of the most accomplished in the scene, and I've always believed that CoCa have had the most intricate and amazing guitar work of any band that's playing music right now. This is easily showcased on tracks like "The Velorium Camper I : Faint Of Hearts" and "Cuts Marked in The March Of Men". The first multi song mini story of Coheed's career, "The Velorium Camper" is introduced on this record, and it's three songs are easily one of the highlights of the record. The most surprising track the album has to offer however is definitely the closer, "The Light And Glass". At this time Coheed had never done something of this nature, and this is truely an amazing song, and must be listened to, if you want to fully appreciate it. The cd keeps great pace, and you won't find yourself getting bored or wanting to skip tracks (even when the songs run somewhere around 8 minutes), making this such an enjoyable listen.
This is definitely an essential album to any fan of Coheed And Cambria. Some poppier elements started to make their way into the band's sound on this one, but it doesn't make this cd any less astounding. I still feel special about owning an original Equal Vision pressing of this cd, before Columbia re-released it. It's definitely a classic that's going to be listened to in the years to come. If you liked CoCa before, or you like them now, there's no reason not to own this one. It's got everything that made them great before, and more elements that help them expand their sound and broaden their audience. Don't let this one slip away without a listen.
Free Music Review: Breathtaking.... Hit: 5 Stars
First off, forget that this is often classified as punk. It is, but not really. It has that modern day punk kind of sound, but is really just prog-rock to the max, very similar to Mars Volta in its scope and rock power. Before I start reviewing the actual album, I would just like to stress that bands like them as well as a few others on the scene right now are, in my opinion, creating the revival of rock. It is hard, the songs are whatever length the ARTIST wants it, and their albums are of epic proportions. ok, well now that that is said, onward to the album.
After the intense intro track, the album kicks off with In Keeping Secrets, with an incredible beat and a lengthy time, this song is more than likely the best on the cd. It is powerful, it is arranged in a genius way, and it reaches musical heights that will astound the listener. Cuts Marked in the March of Men, the next song, is a fast and hard song that takes off at a blistering speed and Claudio;s voice skyrocketing. Three Evils is slightly more poppy, but with one of my favorite lines of the cd. "Pull the trigger and the nightmare stops." This repeated at the end sets up the beginning of the Crowing, which is an unearthly creature screaming, and then the song starts. The Crowing is my least favorite song. While still good, i usually skip this one.
I skip right to Blood Red Summer, a pretty happy sounding song with a chorus of "WHOA-OH-OH-OH"s towards the end. Excellent. Then the The Velourium Camper, Coheed's three part epic begins. These three songs are a few of their finest, and an insane song put together. Then the "hit" starts, Favor House Atlantic. This song is fast, short, poppy, and oh so wonderful. "POSER!" cry some, but no it just so happens that their hit is one of the best songs on the album. Imagine that, a band that actually puts their best foot forward. After that short song, starts the lengthy The Light & and the Glass, and this song gives In Keeping Secrets a run for its money as the best song. The raw emotion and diverse soundscapes created within it is something to be marveled at. Following this amazing song, is a series of 5 or 6 second "songs" of silence, and ends with 2113, a good but mildly out of place track. Definitely a worthwhile listen, though.
Overall an amazing album. It takes up over and hour of your time, and i guarantee that as long as you start it with an open mind, that first listen just may be one of the best hours of your life. Hell, every listen is a good hour of my life. GET IT!! YOU WON'T DISAPPOINTED!
