Free Music Review: Hard rocking album with a great story!
Hit: 5 Stars

I will be the first to admit that Coheed & Cambria are not for everyone. However, if you enjoy music that is incredibly intracate and lyrics that tell a story...well, you might just enjoy this album.

I bought this album after I had heard the track 'Blood Red Summer' and couldn't get it out of my head. I hadn't heard any of the additional tracks. But now that I've listened to it several times, I'm completely hooked.

Coheed & Cambria definitely have a lot of musical talent. Claudio Sanchez (lead vocals) has a very unusual voice that reminds me of Geddy Lee of Rush and the vocal style of the lead singer of Wheatus. However, he does a lot of really interesting and different things with his voice. I know that some people don't care for it, but I'm pretty impressed with someone who has such a huge range and can sing softly or scream and still have it sound like music and not just a bunch of noise.

To me, this album is captivating - I can't get the songs out of my head and right now I can't hear it enough. I haven't heard a seriously ROCKIN' album in a long time that I've enjoyed this much. It reminds me of how I felt the first time I heard Led Zeppelin when I was about 14 years old and decided then and there to ditch top 40 music altogether and start listening to hard rock, metal, classic rock and the like. In my older years, my leanings have been towards more of an electronic sound, but this album is definitely the exception.

I would say if you enjoy a good, head-banging rock song, if you don't mind a dude who sings in a higher tone than most singer-dudes out there, and you like to listen to stuff that makes you THINK and WONDER and maybe even say "Did he really just say that?" you will likely enjoy this album a lot. I highly recommend checking out the band's website (www.coheedandcambria.com) if you want to learn more about the story behind these songs as well.

Free Music Review: Brilliant CD
Hit: 5 Stars

This is the best Coheed and Cambria CD ever. I have listened to this much more than their other 2 CDs, which are also good but dont compare to this one. I bought this CD like 2 years ago before I really knew who these guys were. I only bought it because I live in Cambria County and I thought, hey a band with the name Cambria in it so I got it. After the first listen I really didnt even know what I just listened to and I thought that it was something that definately needs a few more listens. By the third listen I was hooked, I couldnt stop listening to this CD for months, It is just such an epic album. THen people started to know the band because of their video for A Favor House Atlantic then they grew enormously in popularity soon enough. But I will always be happy knowing I am an original Coheed fan before they were known by everybody. Claudio gets a lot of criticism for his "girly" voice, but I have grown used to it and I enjoy it. ALso, I must mention the song "21:13", which is the hidden track number 23, I absolutley love this song. The guitars are just so very well executed and are beautiful. Even though I dont follow the story line or pay much attention to it, I am still a huge fan of CO&CA for their great music.
I saw these guys live and it was the greatest experience ever, they play a great mixture of songs from all three of thier albums and it is awesome to be singing all the songs along with Claudio and the rest of the audience.

Best songs: In Keeping Secrets, The Crowing, all 3 Velourium Campers, The Light and the Glass, and 21:13.

I highly recommend this if you are just getting into the band and only own Appolo or if you want to just hear what these guys are like, just listen to a song like In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth and tell me that isnt brilliant.

Free Music Review: My Rankings for this great album
Hit: 5 Stars

1. The Ring in Return-- N/A--its not a song, it's an intro

2. In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth: 3-- 9/10-- my personal favorite. It has a great epic sound.

3. Cuts Marked in the March of Men-- 7/10-- actually my least favorite song on the album, other than the hidden track

4. Three Evils-- 8/10--- a very catchy and popular song. This upbeat, fast-paced song is surprisingly about murder and suicide, which fits into their comic storyline, and is displayed by the final verses of the song

5. The Crowing-- 9/10-- the favorite song of many true Coheed fans. Is another two-faced song, where it's tone completely turns around at once.

6. Blood Red Summer-- 7/10--very catchy and well-liked. It lies in the 7.5 range for me.

7. The Velourim Camper I: The Faint of Heart-- 7/10--very good song that sets up the next two songs of the trio.

8. The Velourim Camper II: Backend of Forever-- 8/10-- another personal favorite of mine. This track is a GREAT transition from part I to part II.

9. The Velourium Camper III: Al the Killer-- 8/10-- This song is a great, energetic finish to the VC trio. This song complete the transformation from obsessed to derranged, and is done in such a joyous, yet painful way

10. A Favor House Atlantic-- 8/10-- This poppy, thin song would get a 7 from me, but it is very well liked, and other opinions do matter.

11. The Light and The Glass- 8/10-- A very poetic and soothing song that is turned up with emotion, especially toward the end. Meaningful and interesting lyrics, pull this one to the top.

12.(#23) 2113 --6/10-- This bonus track, while solid, is a bit whiney and repetetive. My least favorite on the album.

I HOPE THIS HELPED

Free Music Review: Is Prog-Pop an Oxymoron?
Hit: 5 Stars

Absolutely fantastic! I first ran across Coheed by way of a Spector ad in Bass Player magazine. My friends had told me a bit about them as well, and eventually, when In Keeping Secrets came out, I decided to see what all the fuss was about. The first track prepared me for what was to come- odd opening, combined with the title, combined with a synthesized overture= progressive rock concept album. No stranger to those. Finally, the real music started. I was immediately taken with the amazing, hooky, yet still slightly technical playing, and obviously Claudio's fantastic vocal lines and harmonies. As you can tell by my pen name, I'm a bassist, and I hold Rush in extremely high regard, thus I immediately heard the connection here. Claudio's voice is more refined and showcases a greater range than Geddy's on record, however Geddy wins live- he's had thirty years of practice. Every track on this cd is catchy in its own unique way, the style shifting between pop, emo, screamo, metal, and at times coming close to all out progressive rock, for example the instrumental breakdown in 2113, which made me think "Dream Theater-lite." I have only two small complaints overall. A: the bass mix is absolutely terrible, and almost completely buried (small gripe for most.) And B: I'd love to hear any one of the members stretch out and take a solo to show off the chops that you know they are hiding. (Their live ep contains a fantastic little jam-session of sorts.) Either way you look at it, these guys have everything you could ever want in a band, and I'm looking forward to seeing them push the envelop as they continue to develop and grow. This release is teeming with dark creativity and has me thinking that we may well be enjoying Co&Ca decades into the future.

Free Music Review: One of the best albums of 2004
Hit: 5 Stars

I found this album incredibly addictive, I couldn't stop listening to it for weeks. Great stuff. Tough to compare them to any particular band, but it's obvious that they hold some rock icons as their influences (certainly Rush, Yes, Zep). Wonderful harmonies, great melody/counterparts, tight rhythms. Claudio's voice may turn some people off, and I can understand that, but his range and control are not only impressive, he also sings with such potency that it really 'melts in your head' if you know what I mean. Being an old-school guitar player I would ask they throw in a dedicated solo or 2, but that's a request, not a drawback.

I also like that they mix and match acoustic/slower tunes with all out rock. Being able to play multiple styles/feelings really seperates a great band from an OK band.

For those reviewers who found 'no musical talent' in this band: A)Don't disparage anything you couldn't do better. I find it amazing how many people say 'oh that guitarist sucks'. I'd really like to see them pick up a guitar (or drumsticks or whatever) and try to play something ORIGINAL as well as they person they are putting down

Favorite songs:

The Crowing - Awesome vocal harmonies at the end

2113(hidden track) - So many different parts that stick in your head. I immediately heard the homage paid to Rush here. Any band that can play this tight has my respect, I play and I know how much work it takes

Favor House Atlantic - Some people find it too 'pop' but I like it anyway. As I always say - to each his own

Anyway, for those who are looking for a new band that actually has some talent and writes great material, try it out.
