Free Music Notes for The Second Stage Turbine BladeFree Music Review: Essential listening for fans of progressive rock Hit: 5 Stars
I was turned on to Coheed & Cambria and The Mars Volta by a friend. Being intrigued by the Co&Ca samples I heard online, I bought The Second Stage Turbine Blade and was pretty much blown away (which is saying something from a 40-year-old guy with a library of 1100+ CDs). This band is definitely prog, I don't know where the emo label fits in to the picture?!? Claudio's vocals have been endlessly compared to those of a certain Canadian (whose band I love dearly and grew up with since the 1970s) -- all I will say is that his talent stands on its own and is quite infectious. The guitars are savage, tight and beautifully support the conceptually poetic lyrics, all on a foundation of a heavy and cohesive rhythm section. Coheed & Cambria has created something of a masterpiece -- this is one of those CDs you will cherish for a long time, and quite possibly become a classic. All I can say to Mr. Sanchez and the rest of this gifted band is thank you for keeping the spirit of progressive music alive and well. You have made another fan, and I will definitely be checking out your other releases very soon. It's been a long time since I have been this excited about a band. Rock on...
Free Music Review: Great cd GREAT BAND Hit: 5 Stars
ok heres the deal. most people here co&ca for the first time and think..man this is crap. mostly because of claudio's high pitched vocals over mostly punk oriented music. this was the same situation with me. i heard devil in jersey city as the first song ive ever heard from them. i hated it. i thought it was one of the worst bands i had heard since good charlotte. however a year later i saw the video for a favor house atlantic (on In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth 3) and i also didnt like it. my friends kept bugging me to listen to the cd so i figured what the hell. i listened to the 30 second samples for the songs and downloaded some from their website only to find that they werent that bad. i bought the latest cd first and i cant stop listening to it. i than bought this one and its also one of my top 5 cds. i cant leave the house without or i'll have a confulsion and die. it isnt all punk music like people think. like new found glory crap. its actually heavy music with good emo lyrics. if you don't like it than its not your thing but if you dont like it at first keep listening and if it doesnt get any better sell the cd back. its that simple. just give it a listen.
Free Music Review: AHHHHHHHHH, TALENT!!!! Hit: 5 Stars
One of the quintessential bands of present time, if you haven't heard these guys yet shame on you. First of all I have to make a confession, about a year ago I checked these guys out to see what all the talk was about and I honestly didn't like it so I put em on the backburner and turned elsewhere. Oh what a fool I was, anyways I checked them out again in like August or September and it was like I wasn't paying attention or something on the first listen cuz I simply fell in love with this album. Not a bad or even avg track on this one, they're all great, and with a unique singer (well, unique for a guy) it's liable to grow on anybody. And if the album's music isn't enough to get you hooked it's also a concept album, as is all of Co & Ca's music, centered on the destruction of the universe, a dragonfly carrying a mysterious serum, a dog named Apollo, robots, some chik's name spelled backwards, and other stuff. Then make sure to check out the second installment to the story, In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth:3, which is really the third chapter with SSTB being the second chapter and as yet unreleased fourth and first chapters remaining.
Free Music Review: Finally, something CREATIVE!!!! Hit: 5 Stars
In a year full of inspiring albums, this has to be one of the best. Coheed and Cambria doesn't just grab your ear - they grab your imagination. Emo rock that goes prog and gets screamy with tons of pop sensibility to boot. This album reminds me of being five... a fresh, imaginative sound and an absurd story line that's told with enough sincerity that you want so desperately to believe it. It's like your favorite fairy tale or comic book. As for the actual strength of the songs, they are excellent. At first listen, the band jumps around a bit, but after getting a feel for their sound, the transitions from power pop melody to screaming breakdown to epic crescendo will amaze you. The singer's high pitched voice and great range add to the versitality and whimsical feeling. The songs have just enough of a chorus or hook to have you humming them all day, but they are far from trite or shallow. Overall, very impressive. For fans of Sunny Day Real Estate, Cave In, Rush, Get Up Kids, Jimmy Eat World, Incubus (there are elements of every one of these bands)... or just good music. Definitely must be heard to be appreciated.
Free Music Review: Coheed and Cambria Hit: 5 Stars
Great record. I'm coming to it a little late I suppose. I had heard all the hype last year when it was released-but I never listened to it until recently. I'm listening to this and The Mars Volta-Deloused in the Comatorium back-to-back, both albums are similar in feel and both albums can be played straight through w/out skipping a single track! That's a rare thing for modern rock music. Now for what CoCa sound like...the music is like a ton of stuff to come before(all genres)but they use a different kind of glue to hold everything together. It's heavy at times, very soft at other times, but always intricate and interesting. The vocals are really good-most of the more interesting hooks are from the vox interplay w/the guitar hooks. People tend to compare the lead singer to Geddy Lee, which is not too far off, but, I think he sounds more like the guy from Shudder to Think (Dischord). A little girly at times I agree, but pretty damn fine singing. Anyway, if you consider yourself a fan of modern rock and roll, get this record now and on Oct. 7, 2003 buy the new record.
