Free Music Review: Sensitive, Heart-warming, Soul-searching Music
Hit: 5 Stars

Playing this CD helps me recall the heart warming, sensitive and powerful scenes from the film and book, both of which left a huge impact on my psyche. Any time I wish to return to those soul searching moments, all I need to do is listen. When hearing this CD ... surges of deep intense emotions are aroused ... nostalgia for the Civil War era returns. Recently for me, one of the greatest moments on television was watching Allison Krause and Sting perform, "You Will Be my Ain True Love". Viewing these two amazingly talented artists ... one with a voice like a nightengale, the other playing a traditional instrument ... before millions of viewers and Hollywood notables, performing the song which I love on this CD -- leaves me speechless!

"Wayfaring Stranger", the first track, is like a metaphor for the film ... Inman, climbing through the snow, wading in the river, hiding out ... walking back to Ada. The mandolin, banjo, and fiddle music draw out intense feelings of longing for his sweetheart and determination ... to survive. Tracks, #5 and #6, are fun-loving lively tunes that have the listener tapping their toes and fingers to the beat. The Sacred Harp Singers at Liberty Church (Henagar, Alabama) who perform, "Idumea" are a hidden source of inspiration ... the sounds they create form a source of spiritual sustenance, like manna from above. They are a true spiritual gift and a powerful presence on this CD. "Ruby with the Eyes that Sparkle" and "Lady Margaret" bring back scenes of family reunion and the sad impact of separation caused by the war. The pleasure of listening to this CD is enhanced if one saw the film, "Cold Mountain" or read the book. However, the music is so reminiscent of the era and times in which it was born that it will highly appeal to anyone who loves traditional music.
My highest recommendation. Erika Borsos (erikab93)

Free Music Review: A soul-warming experience........
Hit: 5 Stars

When I walked into the theater to watch Cold Mountain, I was expecting a great soundtrack to back up what happened to turn out to be one of the greatest pictures of the year...Back to the Cd...What negative comment can I make?~~ Nothing. This soundtrack made me appreciate yet another genre of music. Wow, as I listen to this beautiful music soothingly pouring into my ears, it makes life a little more clear.

To be more specific...The soundtrack opens with the strong piece of Wandering Stranger performed by the always faithful vocals of Jack White and then is followed by the majestic traditional folk songs Like a Songbird That Has Fallen and I Wish My Baby Was Born. Skipping track four for later, 5 is the unusual Cuckoo song, yet charming at the same time. Another Jack White piece, Sittin At the Top Of the World is another highlight, wait everysong is a highlight I'm sorry!, Am I born To Die, CHristmas Time..., and Ruby with the Eyes That Sparkle, are all true gems.

Now in case you havent heard the compelling voice of the amazing folk/blues icon Alison Kraus then please buy this soundtrack in favor of My Ain True Love, what a phenomenal song, and also a golden globe contender! The Scarlett Tide is another terrific piece of traditional music as well as Lady Margret. The true masters that steal the disc are the members of the powerhouse Sacred Harp Church choir members their two pieces, Iduema and I'm Going Home are sure to melt your heart and soothe the soul.

Please don't omit the instrumentals composed by Gabriel Yared which are the final few on the CD, all of them are chilling yet joyous.

As an amatuer to folk music, you may just overlook this review, but i do believe i know exceptional music when i hear it.. so please take purchasing this great CD into consideration.

Free Music Review: "T-Bone Burnett has another winner ~ Cold Mountain"
Hit: 5 Stars

Sony Music jumps on the bandwagon of Americana with a collection of traditional country from "Cold Mountain", the Anthony Minghella's Civil War film featuring nineteen tracks of soundtrack and score ~ featuring Stuart Duncan, Cassie Franklin, Dirk Powell, Tim Eriksen, Riley Baugus, Tim O'Brien, Alison Krauss, Jack White, Sacred Harp Singers (at Liberty Church) and the score composed by Gabriel Yared who seemingly brings all the characters to life through his magnificent music.

Plain to see the brand of T-Bone Burnett on this compilation, much like "O Brother, Where Art Thou?", the same driving force with cues like "THE SCARLET TIDE", brings the song writing talent of Elvis Costello and voice of Alison Krauss with harmony by Cheryl White to the fore and "YOU WILL BE MY AIN TRUE LOVE", another beautiful composition from String who also sings backup with Alison ~ "WAYFARING STRANGER", "SITTIN' ON TOP OF THE WORLD", "NEVER FAR AWAY", "CHRISTMAS WILL SOON BE OVER" and "GREAT HIGH MOUNTAIN", features blues, gospel, folk and country with an unforgettable interpretation by songwriter/vocalist Jack White (who debuted in this film).

My stand out pick is "I'M GOING HOME", performed by the Sacred Harp Singers at Liberty Church unleash the power of four part harmony that goes back one hundred and ten years ~ haunting and vibrate makes the floor shake with their sound ~ this cue is well worth the price of the album...gotta love it!

Total Time: 63:07 on 19 Tracks ~ Sony 86843 ~ (12/16/2003)

Hit: 5 Stars

As a dedicated Sacred Harp singer for 8 years, and
has sung with the Henegar folks including Cassie Franklin at
our Annual All Day Singings in July here&with Cassie's Great
Aunt,Miss Pauline Creel has come to sing at our monthly sings
here in Kalamazoo,Michigan,I will say that the Henegar folks&
Cassie did wonderfully on their cuts.I have never heard 282&47b
done better. As for Jack White,if he usually sings another sort
of music,I think he should do an acoustic album once in a while.

Tim O'Brien&c also did a great job on their cuts.As for the re-
viewer who complained that only Sting should sing his songs,I
think his harmony part with Alison Krauss was great.Alison Krauss also did a fantastic job on her two songs.I would also
like to reiterate what another reviewer said about finding out
first hand about Sacred Harp by going to a singing in their
area. For purchasers of this CD who live in the Southwestern
Michigan area,we have our monthly singings on the third Sunday
of every month&our Annual All Day Sing is on the Third Sunday
in July, that will be the 18th in 2004.If you want to find a
singing in your area directly,go to this web-site www.fasola.org
T-Bone Burnett has another winner.Amen Hallelujah

Free Music Review: Music Worthy of the Film
Hit: 5 Stars

Cold Mountain by Charles Frazier is literally one of the best books I've ever read. The movie captured its essence, through and through. And its producers were creative and intelligent enough to employ a soundtrack worthy of this remarkable and heartbreakingly beautiful story. Thank heavens they did not use a large, soaring musical production, as this would have lessened the intimacy of the film.

The songs are "low key," as they should be, quietly evoking sadness and pain, and they do so kind of gently--like a caring friend who has stood by us during the worst of times. The music is solid throughout, especially the Alison Krauss tunes, in my opinion, but each and every one has something to say, and they say it well.

Life is hard for all of us. As we age, we have more and more pain from which to draw. Although the heroes and heroines in Cold Mountain suffered great loss and sorrow, in the end, sitting outside at the picnic table, we can see love and caring between them that survived despite their tremendous heartache. The Cold Mountain soundtrack reflects all of this--the pain and hope and love--which is quite amazing to me.
