Free Music Review: Send In The Clowns
Hit: 5 Stars

It's hard to pin-point exactly when angst filled music, solely made for that one thing was truly created. Some say it was when 'God Save The Queen' by The Sex Pistols hit the top spot back in the late 70's. Some say it was the day that Metallica invented thrash with their debut album 'Kill 'Em All'. And some say it was when Kurt Cobain and co. finally killed off Bon Jovi and Poison. But when it truly hit home was when KoRn decided to go and release an album that would invent nu-metal. Just about all that followed were shameless reproductions that lacked interest (as with much of KoRn's music itself), but few bands broke through that and made genuinely enjoyable albums that could go beyond angst filled and driven teenagers. Other founding fathers, Deftones are like a Radiohead for nu-metal, pushing the genre to the limit. But if there's one band that truly capture the feel of nu-metal, strip it down for all to see, and make it more despairing than ever before, it's Cold. To be honest, you can't even class Cold as nu-metal, their songs are a lot more complicated and don't just depend on one riff per song. This is a band who were to be compared musically for their overall feel, and completely depressing sound to the likes of Tool...

And that was thanks to '13 Ways To Bleed On Stage', a fine album full of angst driven rockers, mixed with a level fine collection of desperate ballads. With most bands it's easy to choose one or the other for being the bands better style. With the likes of KoRn themselves, it's easy to choose rockers above all, but with Cold, mainly thanks to vocalist Scooter Wards deep, deep growling tone, they can do either just as well and both sound like they've put 100% into what they love doing. Opener, 'Just Got Wicked' is a great example of hard guitars, eerie effects and superb vocals, Ward even treating himself to a disturbing, growling shout. And it's a template for another of Cold's abilities that so many fail on. Atmosphere. At times, Cold really can be terrifying, and I'm not understating there. You can really feel the tension running through your body as 'Send In The Clowns' builds up and up, and when Scooter happens to start mentioning needles on 'She Said' it's positively, or maybe that should be negatively, mortifying. But despite this atmosphere of pure, pain, death, needles, suffering and even images of razor-blades imprinted in the provided booklet based to look like a diary, there is enough to keep this album going even for the downright optimistic. The riffs in 'Just Got Wicked', the piano introduction and quiet-loud system of, 'She Said', and the weird, almost out of this world feel to, 'It's All Good', are just three examples of why this is a purchase for a rock fan and not just a nu-metal fan or metal head. Up until track 12, 'Outerspace', there isn't a weak track throughout if you have a fairly open mind (also bare in mind there are 14 tracks on 13 Ways...). A lot of the songs are based around that quiet-loud system that works so well, with a hard hitting chorus, in the likes of the apolyptic, 'End Of The World', the...well confessional, 'Confession', the intense, 'Send In The Clowns', the heart-pounding, 'Anti-Love Song' among other on this, Cold's second album. But what of the ballads...now I have to say in my own opinion that Cold do the angst filled ballads better than anyone else right now. Not only do they push you over into a muddy puddle, they kick you while you're down, and then pull you up and dust you off...'No-one' a message to Scooters lonely mother, is a fine example. When Scooter almost croons, 'I can't really believe...No-one was sent to get me', you really do feel for it. In 'It's All Good' you can sense a frustration of a fast, thrash song that has been packaged into a ballad. There's subtle swearing in just about every line, which only intensifies the frustration, not lower it to a 'Limp Bizkit' level. And THAT'S how intense it feels to listen to Cold. You can literally feel the frustration there, and yet you do keep wanting to come back to their world. Final track is ultimately the most-depressing acoustic ballad, reminiscent of their sludgy debut album 'Cold'. 'Bleed' also is a kind of duet with Staind's Aaron Lewis, although it isn't his first appearance on the album, also appearing in just one screaming chorus in 'Send In The Clowns'. It is a song about the pressures of Cold's newly found fame, but can be interpreted however you want it, with just two lines: 'I wanna bleed, show the world all that I have inside, I wanna scream, let the blood flow that keeps me alive'...

Cold came a long way from their patchy debut to create an album that not only needs to go down as one of the most overall depressing, but atmospheric, complicated, confusing and overall best and most intriguing and overall consistent album since the new Millennium began. This, Cold's finest collection of songs to date, is certainly not coffee-table music. They bled for everyone for this and '13 Ways To Bleed On Stage', should be, but unfortunately never will be, a true classic of their generation.

5 Stars.
