Free Music Review: Strong Guitars, Solid Vocals

This is the band Cold's third release and it's just as rockin' as the previous albums. Singer Scooter Ward has always delivered a strong solid performance, showing off his vocal ranges of low to angrier louder ones, all ending in great harmonies. The band has made a tight, well produced album. Guitarists Kelly Hayes and Terry Balsamo show up here playing very well together, with their interesting guitar lines, making the chemistry of the band work. Throughout Year of the Spider Scooter Ward's lyrics are very heart felt and sincere. They aren't you're typical shallow sex/girls topics. He sings about personal issues within his life with his family (his sister's battle with cancer) and does have songs about relationships, but they are more heart-felt and don't contain cheesy lyrics like a lot of rock bands.
One of my favorite tracks is "Suffocate", which has guest vocalist Sierra Swan in which in the chorus Scooter and Sierra play the relationship of boyfriend and girlfriend arguments of the typical lying. It's quite humorous in it's own subtle way. The guitars are strong and chunky and the vocals are adventurous and solid throughout the whole album. Other songs on the album are "Whatever You Became", "Stupid Girl" and "Don't Belong". This is a great album.

Limited Edition also contains a bonus DVD approximately one half hour in duration that contains the video for "Stupid Girl" as well as footage from the recording of the album and the making of the video.Though Cold's music has become more melodic and accessible, that doesn't mean that they've turned over a new leaf. Scratch the surface and you'll find these Florida soreheads are still mad at the world, but happily able to channel that rage into compelling, brainy head-banging. In fact, it wouldn't be going too far to call them post-alt-metal Beck, what with their collage of disparate sounds and effects and their self-referential declarations, mimicking the diminutive singer's early outings: "I'm a loner / I'm a loser / I'm a winner in my own mind / I'm a bad one / I'm a good one / I'm a sick one with a smile." But they're not just a hardened bunch of nihilists. Their bleak worldview is rescued by a staunch sense of self and the quaint but sweet notion of the healing power of love. The affection of a good, but flawed woman is pervasive on the album's 13 tracks. With Scooter Ward's powerful vocals, inventive guitar interplay, and Sam McCandless' nonstop primal bashing, Cold, after 15 years together, are outshining mentors Limp Bizkit. --Jaan Uhelszki
