Free Music Notes for A Rush of Blood to the Head

Free Music Review: Great album
Hit: 5 Stars

I became intrigued with Coldplay after reading many reviews and articles hailing them as the best British Band and the greatest band in the world. However, I couldn't remember hearing any of their songs so I didn't have an idea of what their sounds was like. I'm kinda particular about my rock--I am an r&b/hip hop fan at heart, but appreciate slower, pensive rock with acoustic guitars and soft piano melodies. I saw Coldplay's performance at the Grammy's and my curiousity was piqued even more and I considered buying their cd then, but it was another performance by John Mayer that sent me speeding to Tower Records the next day.

Finally, about 2 weeks ago, I sat through the whole video of Clocks on VHI and realized that I needed to stop procrastinating and buy this cd. Of course I had heard Clocks before and loved the melody, I just wasn't compelled to own it until then. Buying the cd last week has truly been the best investment I have made this summer, on anything. I know that I will listen to this cd FOREVER. It took me about 3 days of listening to it before I was able to identify its individual song melodies, instrumentation, and little nuances that make you fall in love with a particular song. My favorite track has to be Politik, especially the final 2/3 when it gets softer and Chris pleads, "Give me love over, love over this" I also love "The Scientist", all praises heaped upon that song are justified, as are Warning Sign, and the title track. In My Place and of course, Clocks round out my favorites. That's 7 out of 11, well worth the [money] I paid for it, but the investment of being able to be transported into the mood that these songs evoke, every time I listen to them is priceless. I know that listening to it as the months progress will remind me of this lazy but troubled summer I've had, and how I was able to cope with the music of Coldplay. Excellent music from excellent musicians. I am a fan for life now.

Free Music Review: More than genius...this album is beautiful.
Hit: 5 Stars

I have been a big fan of Coldplay since Parachutes came out almost 3 years ago. I remember that I had bought that album from hearing "Shiver" on the radio a couple times- I could tell by listening to that song that the band who made it had something really special going on. That album became one of my favorites very quickly. When A Rush of Blood to the Head came out I quickly bought it. I had heard "In My Place" on the radio a couple of times, and I thought that their sophomore effort would be a simple improvement on what they had already espablished. I started listening to the album in the car on the way home after I bought it, and when I got to my street I just kept driving. This CD took me by suprise, and it has become one of the best I have ever listened to. Ever. Those are bold words but they are justified. Maybe it's just me, but I could truly connect with the energy held in every song. This album is completely flawless. "The Scientist", the bands third single from the record, is a song that is so good that it is almost uncomfortable to listen to with someone else in the room. It hits your heart and the base of your spine and you get goosebumps; you can't help it. "Amsterdam" is a soulful song that will leave you wishing it would go on just a little bit longer. "Green Eyes" takes you by pleasant suprise; it's chords and structure are no shock, but the style it's played in is a new sound. "God Put A Smile Upon Your Face" is a very capturing song, cynical and epic at the same time. I could site every song on the record and have nothing but good things to say about it. Listen, if you're sitting there wondering whether or not to buy this cd, take my word for it: you will not be let down. It is everything all the critics have said and more. You need to get it; it's that simple. And after it becomes one of your favorites, be sure to tell you friends.

Free Music Review: One of the few GOOD new rock bands
Hit: 5 Stars

Coldplay has created a masterpiece with this album. Combining masterful piano ballads with driving guitars and intelligent lyrics with vibrant melodies, Coldplay had gone the extra mile to make sure that this album is all that it could be.

A few highlights on the album are "Politik", which is a wonderful opening to wet your appetite for the rest of the album. The next song, "In My Place", is probably the best song on the entire album. It includes simple guitar riffs and lyrics that paint a wonderful picture.

The album continues with "God Put A Smile Upon Your Face", one of the few songs that has a driving guitar as the lead instrument. Next comes the song that has won Coldplay quite a few awards, "The Scientist". This is a touching love ballad with a finale that includes a driving guitar and melodic groans that sound as if it came from the heart.

"Clocks", probably the song with the most radio-play from this album, starts with a piano riff and continues with cryptic lyrics that requires a second listening to catch all of the thoughts being expressed. The final song that I will mention is "Daylight", which has a great lead guitar in it, creating the main riff that the other instruments mold around perfectly.

To put it simply, this album is one of the few albums that I can listen to from beginning to end without having to skip any track. It's refreshing to see a band that uses it's classic rock roots to it's advantage by creating a sound reminiscent of Pink Floyd and The Beatles (ballads). It's also nice to see a new band that writes lyrics that MEAN something.

In conclusion, if you want a CD that has meaning and sounds that show effort by the band, then this is for you. If you like mellow music, then this is for you. However, if you don't think it's music unless the group can do synchronized dancing or rap, then this is not for you.

Free Music Review: Flawless, Challenging Recording
Hit: 5 Stars

This CD is a fabulous listen. Coldplay has certainly become a voice for many disenfranchised music lovers, who have been beaten over the head with mindlessly stupid, studio manufactured, record company financed music no-talents. Coldplay has infinitely more credibility in Chris Martin's pinky than the entire conglomerate of plasticness of today's so-called pop stars (Twain, Dion, Madonna, Lopez et.al).

It is incredibly refreshing to hear lyrics that actually have weight, meaning and purpose. It is heartening to hear real, satisfying music instead of bells and whistles to hide shortcomings in the talent and that amplify the gross incompetence of the performer.

People who have taken potshots at this group, comparing them to Radiohead and Travis, chastising them for sounding too much, or not sounding enough like them, and calling their music 'wuss rock' are way off track in their commentary. You can't compare music this good with anything out there today. It is fresh, original, socially-biting and alive.

Every song on this CD has it's own merits. The leadoff, "Politik", with it's spacey music and in your face lyrics is perfect. The hit single "In My Place" is smart and bright. The jazzy title track is a nice change of pace. "The Scientist" is one of the best saddest songs I have ever heard - just brilliant. The greatness continues with "Clocks", with it's trippy magnificence. There is not one single flaw on this recording. Everything fits and sounds as it should. Chris Martin is at his vocal best and the band is once again superb.

There can be no denying quality such as this. They have helped redefine the British rock sound and have made it their own. My only hope is that they don't follow in the footsteps of The Verve and Radiohead and break up or experiment to the point of redundancy, respectively. Along with "Parachutes", Coldplay is highly, highly recommended. First rate.

Free Music Review: Very, very good
Hit: 5 Stars

First, quit with the comparisons. "They're just Radiohead!" If they were just Radiohead then they'd be Radiohead wouldn't they? Radiohead is Radiohead and Coldplay is Coldplay. Same goes for U2. And I don't like it when people tell others to listen to Radiohead instead of Coldplay. Radiohead are a tad overrated. I like them but somtimes it seems like Thom Yorke has gone "Hmmm... I'll just write some random chords and they'll sound good... C#m7add11#5 sounds good... I like complicated chords." an example of this is Just on The Bends, that guitar chord progression is just random and stupid.
Now to A Rush of Blood to the Head. I'm a new Coldplay fan. I used to dispise them. I don't know why but I think it had something to with Clocks being used for the Peter Pan trailers and I hated the kid who played Peter Pan... That was probably it. But then, just last year I was looking for music that was... Beautiful, shimmering. I reluctantly put this album on iTunes but I didn't listen to it. Then one day whilst listening on shuffle In My Place came on... It was the one that got me... It was just so pretty. The chord progression, the riff, it just works. After that I got all their albums and I think I like almost every single one of their songs.
People also tend to say that this album (and Coldplay in general) are depressing but I think that they, inside, are depressed and are trying to find something easy to blame their problems on. This music isn't depressing, I haven't ever felt the need to kill myself whilst listening to Coldplay. Also I think that people always mistake melancholy for depression.
This album will be a favourite for mine for a long time I think, and I just feel sorry for the people that hate Coldplay but instead like to hear a guitar being shredded and distorted and people singing about drugs, death and sex, because they're missing out.
