Free Music Review: Coldplay reminds us of what music can be
Hit: 5 Stars

I popped this album in for a listen today and was reminded of how much I enjoy it. I'm not a diehard Coldplay fan, but I own their two more mainstream albums and they are definitely worthy of praise.

I was driving in the car with my friend Rose the other day and we were listening to A Rush of Blood to the Head... I kept commenting "I like this song", "This is a good song", to which she replied, "They're all good songs!" I think that pretty much sums up the talent level of the band. All of their tracks are of high caliber, unlike much of the music that is hastily recorded and marketed today, as other Amazon reviewers have pointed out. These guys know they have something to say, and they are on a mission to make high-quality music, to prove that there is still high-quality music to be made. Obviously the public has responded favorably to it as well, because I have not read a negative review of Parachutes. Indeed it is soothing music, heartfelt and meaningful music that manages to be deep and reflective without being depressing. It's easy to listen to in virtually any setting - driving in the car, entertaining friends, even falling asleep. Not often is music able to be so successful in such a pleasant manner - even the most angsty of songs on Parachutes are an enjoyable and relaxing listen.

It is clear how dedicated the band members are to their craft as well; they are not just some fly-by-night pop icons trying to make a quick buck. Just take a minute to watch one of their videos (notably "Clocks") and you will see how connected they are to their music.

The members of Coldplay, aside from being great musicians, are also successful at being good people. Their efforts to make trade fair and restore rainforest are noble endeavors for anyone to take on, and I especially respect this sort of political responsibility shown by pop artists who are in the spotlight. I'd probably love them for the causes they so humbly support even if their music was horrible. Luckily for us listeners, Coldplay is able to provide the entire package.

Free Music Review: Coldplay provides a raw and vulnerable debut that gently shakes your soul...
Hit: 5 Stars

Upon its release, "Parachutes" reached #1 in the UK and peaked at #51 on the Billboard 200. It has since gone mutli-platinum in both countries.

Coldplay's debut album is their rawest recording, and by raw I imply that it is not over-produced. It has a naturally warm and spacious sound, which is mostly due to Chris Martin's vulnerable, yet inviting voice conveying honest lyrics, and Jonny Buckland's aching reverb-style guitar that also makes good use of the slide bar. However, every band member shines on this record.

"Parachutes" starts with the optimistic, understated `Don't Panic', which is a great opener. `Shiver' is a rock/pop song with a stand-out guitar riff. A slide bar guitar note brings in the haunting `Spies', a song with a paranoid vibe that slowly builds to an almost frantic climax before it slowly burns out. `Sparks' is a swaying love song with a cool vibe and an excellent bass line. A powerful and driving ode to colorful love, `Yellow' is the "rocker" of the album, with its pounding drums and wailing guitar riff. `Trouble' opens with a sad and blue piano that carries into a laid back drum and bass line, definitely one of Coldplay's finest songs. The title track is a 46-second treat from Chris Martin and his acoustic guitar. I love the sound of his fingers sliding on the strings as he changes chords, it sounds very intimate. Following the low-key tune is `High Speed', the most produced song on "Parachutes", because this song was carried over from their "Blue Room" EP with a different producer. However, it fits perfectly and is an amazing song. Jonny Buckland's riff on `High Speed' is so beautiful and will implant itself in your brain for a long time. `We Never Change' is a soul-searching surprise. As the final track, `Everything's Not Lost' ends the album as optimistic as it began, and sounds hopeful.

In the end, "Parachutes" leaves you feeling musically fulfilled, yet personally empty because it leaves you wanting more of its distinctive mood and vibe. Oh...what a way to go down!

5 stars!

Free Music Review: My Favorite Album
Hit: 5 Stars

I am sick of people comparing Coldplay to U2 or radiohead. Coldplay has a very unique sound unlike any other band and it emanates from evey song they play. I have heard reviewers say that Coldplay has tried to emulate radiohead, but they clearly do not come anywhere close to the psychedelics of Kid A or Ok Computer. Their focus, in my mind, is creating melodies that flawlessly mesh with the vocals, not trying to hypnotize you while you're tripping. The songs on this album are good for any mood, sad or happy, high or normal, and they magnify emotions like crazy. The lyrics in these songs are fantastic, and they really make you think about your life.

I am a college student, and every time i go to the library to study, i bring Parachutes along with me. Sometimes i will put the whole album on repeat and listen to it several times over and over again. The amazing thing is that i have never felt this way about a band. I get tired of great music because i play it too often, but this cd just gets better every time i listen to it. I only have one real problem with the album... they should have put careful where you stand on this album in addition, or else instead of high speed. That would have made this album earthshaking.

As far Parachutes' significance as a debut, I could argue that this is the best debut in history. The maturation process of many bands carries them to their best music 2 or 3 LPs after their debut, but Coldplay has set their fans up for disappointment. If they truly have not reached their peak yet, i can't wait till their next album comes out. However, I listen to Parachutes and ask myself how could Coldplay make a better album. Unfortunately, A Rush of Blood does not come close; yes, there are some amazing songs in it, but song for song Parachutes is just plain better.

Every song on Parachutes is good, im not even going to bother trying to rate them. Buy it. You wont be disappointed.

Free Music Review: A great debut from a great band
Hit: 5 Stars

Coldplay's "Parachutes" is a finely crafted and exquisite ablum that blends together amazingly well.
When this album first came out I liked the band but just never really thought about buying the cd. I purchased this ablum after buying and falling in love with "A Rush of Blood to the Head" (another amazing album). I discovered that "Parachutes was even better than their follow-up. Each song is fenominal and blends really well with all the other songs. "Parachutes" flows really well from song to song, including great transition songs like "Sparks", "Parachutes", and "We Never Change", which are all great songs and really make a nice flow from the high spots of the CD, but don't get me wrong they are themselves great songs. "Shiver", "Spies", "Trouble", and "High Speed" are the standout tracks in my mind. "Shiver" is just and amazing song, hands down. "Spies" is a perfect mix of spooky, creepy, and melodic, with a hint of pop sensablitiy. "Trouble" always makes me depresse when i listen to it because Chris Martin just sings with so much passion and grief that it makes you hurt, no matter how happy you are. "High Speed" is another great song with a lot of pop sensablity while still being a great rock song. One of the best parts of the album is Chris Martin's use of his falsetto. He effortlessly soars on the clouds with his voice and is one of the most recognizable voices i've heard in a long time. As a tenor in my school choir i have a great deal of respect for the notes he hits and with the ease he hits them, he has a real talent that makes Coldplay standout from all the other rock bands out on the scene right now. Altogether, "Parachutes" is a melodic, crafty, and powerfully moving CD that introduces what is to be one of the greatest british rock bands of our time.

Free Music Review: one of the most focused records ever
Hit: 5 Stars

i have a considerable aversion to awarding five stars to anything, because i would lose substantial credibility if i gave everything five stars, and more importantly, most records aren't good enough to merit that kind of recognition. coldplay's first big-time, full-length release, "parachutes", is essentially a flawless album. that's heavy praise, for sure, but i'll challenge anyone to prove me wrong. this is an album about the pains and pleasures of loving and living. sure, almost everyone touches on these matters at some point, but rarely is it done this well. throughout "parachutes" there is a strong feeling of inner sadness and failure to find true love or peace of mind, but there is always an underlying motif of hope, highlighted most poignantly by the last track, "everything's not lost", and the "hidden" track, "life is for living". the song that may stand out the most is "yellow", because its melody is the most immediately accessible, but after spinning this disc a few times, every song will please equally. consequently, the album has a strong, cohesive quality to it, much like travis' latest offering, "the man who". frankly, the two albums are strikingly similar, but they are both outstanding. it is intelligent, singer/songwriter material delivered with the charismatic flair of that small gang of slyly mischievous british kids, who cause a little havoc, but smile intelligently, because they realize that life is better this way. in other words they don't take their seriousness too seriously, and neither should you, but they wholeheartedly believe in what they say. the fact that the music is equally beautiful makes this one of the best, most engaging and heartfelt records to come out of england. it will be damned hard for them to progress musically and spiritually and make a record this good on their next attempt.
