Free Music Notes for ParachutesFree Music Review: Better than A Rush...(Maybe) 4.5 Hit: 5 Stars
In the beginning I thought A Rush of Blood To the Head was a better album than Parachutes. Now I believe Parachutes is better. It meets my requirement for a great album: every song is listenable and ranges from good to VERY good, while Rush...has a couple of duds which lessens the overall effect of the album even though it holds many of Coldplay's STRONGER songs.
No, I don't like all of the songs to the same degree, but this is a very consistent album with great romantic songs.
Don't Panic-short and beautiful, but not sure the lyrics are accurate with the world we live in now. Matter of fact, has the world EVER been beautiful? Yes, before people existed. Anyway, my 2nd favorite. 5/5
Shiver-this is a song I usually skip, but when I listen to the album in its entirety I recognize it has some quality. 3/5
Spies-a weird song, but good nonetheless.4/5
Sparks-my favorite on this album. It's indescribable. 5/5
Yellow-the hit from the record, and in my Top 4. 5/5
Trouble-my 3rd favorite, yet probably the best song on the album as far as depth, emotion, music, and lyrics. 5/5
Parachutes-Only 46 seconds, but nice. 4/5
High Speed-here Chris Martin sounds un-Chris Martin-like. You can tell this was one of Coldplay's earlier songs: one of the songs before Martin adopted his "high" voice. 3.5/5
We Never Change-an emotional song that pulls at your heartstrings. 5/5
Everything's Not Lost-another good sad one. 4/5
Hidden track: another short one, but the lyrics are meaningful. 4/5
Free Music Review: A very notable debut album from the great Coldplay Hit: 5 Stars
I must admit, after hearing some of the great songs from A RUSH OF BLOOD TO THE HEAD, I didn't totally warm up to PARACHUTES. The first time I listened to it, it seemed like a good freshman effort, but nothing more. RUSH seemed more ambitious and more memorable overall. And yet, after a while, PARACHUTES started to grow on me. Sure, all its songs are, in a way, love songs, but they are all done in a style that is totally and unmistakably Coldplay---certainly the yearning vocals of Chris Martin is not something you'll hear in other love songs. That, and the lyrics make an admirable attempt to be something much more than the usual "love song," to touch on things more universal than a man's unrequited love. From the line "We live in a beautiful world" in the opening song "Don't Panic" to the repeated impassioned cries of "Everything's Not Lost," this is music that touches the heart and soul in a way more pop-packaged, audience-friendly music hardly attempt to do. Despite the fact that I gave 4 stars to A RUSH OF BLOOD TO THE HEAD, I still believe it to be a better album that PARACHUTES, simply because its great songs---its first six tracks, especially---trump almost anything on this first effort of theirs. But PARACHUTES is admittedly more consistent in quality, and has some memorable songs of its own (my personal favorites are "Trouble" and "Everything's Not Lost," and of course almost everyone knows "Yellow"). As such, I believe it deserves the highest rating. May Coldplay continue to rock on with its unique musical style! Recommended.
Free Music Review: A truly beautiful record Hit: 5 Stars
For those of us who were fans of the late and brilliant Jeff Buckley...there was a noticeable void left in the music world when he drowned tragically back in '97. Who could provide moving meaninful songs, with wonderful melodies, honest lyrics and deliver it with truly beautiful vocal ability?.....Enter Coldplay....I happened to catch a snippet of the single Yellow on CNN's worldbeat and I remember thinking"this may be something for me"..Then it seemed for the next few weeks, I kept hearing about Coldplay. So, finally, after a few weeks, I capitulated and went and got the damn cd, lol..And..from the first song on, I was struck by the warmth, honesty, and overall touching beauty of the album. I put it in and listened to the whole thing straight without skipping or even WANTING to skip one song. Just like with Buckley, it was love at first listen for me. This album isnt for everybody......but if u like some brit pop as I do ( i.e The Sundays, the first Cranberries record, Radiohead, The Verve)..you will LOVE this record. And for Buckley fans, while there will never EVER be another Jeff Buckley, Coldplay's lead singer does have his own lilting falsetto that he uses to good effect on the album, all the while never sounding gimmicky with it. I think the theme of the album, for me, is the sincereity of the music...when you listen to it, you get that nice warm feeling inside..I dunno...maybe thats just me, lol..but this album totally takes me back to my college dorm days when as often as not you'd hear a Sundays album blasting from my room while I lay on the bed in a romantic reverie........
Free Music Review: my favorite band Hit: 5 Stars
You've probably all heard "Yellow". The pleasant surprise of the album "Parachutes" is that the radio hit is not a peak surrounded by valleys. You can expect every song on this CD to live up to the musicality, the accessability, and the emotional value of that song. Some people will suggest that this album is flat and unvaried--but a plateau at this level of greatness can be a beautiful thing. (Let me instead suggest that an album with a consistent tone and songs all of equally high quality is so unusual these days that some listeners can't immediately process it.)This CD snuck up on me the way all my favorites do; I bought it, thought, "This is not what I expected," and put it away somewhere. Then the ghosts of chords and melodies I'd heard on it (particularly "We Never Change", "Shiver" and "Trouble") began to float around in my head and I was forced to listen to it again...and again... This CD has become ingrained in my psyche, and I listen to it feeling that somehow my own personal thoughts have been tapped and set to music, and laid out for me here. I have feelings of possession for this album as though I wrote it, or it was written for me, neither of which are true (that I know of). Unlike an album which simply lived up to my expectations, this one diverted them and exceeded them. The bottom line is: this CD is fantastic. If you can't stand your music mellow, or you're disturbed by the uniqueness of Chris Martin's voice, "Parachutes" will probably not change your mind. But it did change mine.
Free Music Review: Another Radiohead fan. Hit: 5 Stars
Coldplay has definitely come up with something original here. "Yellow" is a beautiful song and it inspired me to pick up "Parachutes". Listen to it and form your own opinion before believing that they resemble Radiohead or Travis. I am a Radiohead fan (Yorke's name is'nt tattooed on my arm or anything) but I have read too many reviews about Coldplay sounding like them. Must everyone be compared to Radiohead. I mean I know they're abstract geniuses who can't be paralleled, but Coldplay really bares no resemblance, besides being emotional music. If Chris Martin (vocals) sounds like anyone, its Dave Matthews, and even thats a stretch. Now to piss off all the hard core "Radioheads" - "Kid A" was original but didn't have as many good songs as "The Bends". Concerning lyrics, I think hard core Radiohead fans think that everything Yorke writes is very "deep", even if they don't understand it. He could mumble a song of four words 23 times and it would still be "deep". Yorke would probably be the first to say, that most of his songs are not that complex. In leaving, I recommend both "Parachutes" and "Kid A" as stocking stuffers. I could'nt wait that long and due to selfishness, bought them early. A word of advice about anything good or bad you hear about music: Listen to it yourself, your the final judge of what goes into your ear and to quote Chuck D, "Don't believe the hype, it's a sequel..." Thanks to Coldplay and Radiohead for not being Rap/Core.
