Free Music Notes for Viva La Vida/Prospekt's March

Free Music Review: Put them both together and you have a lot of good stuff!
Hit: 5 Stars

This is REALLY different! I did not expect the new CD to be like this although when I heard Brian Eno was going to be producing, I had a feeling it would be different. I was not able to grasp it all at first. I mean they are radically changing their sound here, completely different instrumentation, orchestration, and production. My first instinct is I don't like some of it it because it sounds like a band trying to really experiment. I think Coldplay thought after X&Y they had become a bit too predictable and formulative. Although I believe that is true somewhat (some of it was boring), although there were certainly a lot of good songs on X&Y. Especially if you include all the bonus tracks from the same sessions released in various forms. Well Coldplay is certainly not predictable here I do like many of the songs though, I LOVE the title song! This will go down as one of my favorite Coldplay songs of all time! I also like the first single, Violet Hill. I also love Cemeteries Of London which has the trademark U2 guitar style (but that's not a bad thing here). I also like Lost, including the acoustic version. 42 starts off very brooding and ends with a great musical piece. It's a good song, and the start of a lot experimentation. Lovers In Japan has a lot of instrumentation overlay, not a bad song but kind of a basic Coldplay song (like X&Y). Than we come to songs like Yes and Strawberry Swing which like I said I cannot really appreciate. I have to say I probably like Yes better because it's more upbeat but it's like two songs because the second half sounds completley different (and perhaps goes on too long). Death And All His Friends also starts off brooding low key and than works up in a similar fashion as the great song Fix You did! In the end I can say if your a Coldplay fan, the CD is very much buying. I love several of the songs and like many others. Albums like this can grown on you and later you may appreciate it more than you think. Coldplay still stands as my favorite modern group and this CD was bold enough to experiment with their sound and make something different! I don't think another CD in the same direction of X&Y would have worked out for them. 2008 was no time for this band to get stuck in a rut! The EP side Prospekt's March also has SEVERAL more tracks to make up for the couple I did not like on Viva. If you put them both together, you have 40-45 minutes of GREAT Coldplay music with a couple throw aways on each disc! Prospekts March also didn't need those remikes.

Viva La Vida/Prospekt's March Poster

Special limited quantity two-disc set Viva La Vida ? Prospekt?s March. The two disc set includes the #1 hit single "Viva La Vida" and "Violet Hill," "Lost!" and "Lovers In Japan" plus the Prospekt?s March EP featuring 8 new tracks. The Prospekt?s March EP includes six recently-completed songs that the band had begun recording during the Viva La Vida sessions plus brand new versions of two album tracks ? "Lost +" (featuring Jay-Z) and "Lovers in Japan (Osaka Sun mix)."
What's this? New Coldplay material so soon after the release of Viva La Vida? In fact, Prospekt's March is a collection of songs that were chiefly intended for the band's fourth album that weren't finished before the deadline. There are eight tracks in total (some new, some new-ish), and a couple of re-workings of older material. Amongst the re-imaginings is a largely decorative Osaka Sun mix of "Lovers in Japan," and a version of "Lost" that includes an unlikely guest vocalist in the shape of Jay-Z. It seems to work. Of the new material, the piano interlude "Postcards from Far Away" is the shortest and most coruscating work, while "Life in Technicolor (II)" is larger (but slightly less successful), adding only cursory elements to its predecessor on Viva La Vida. More alluring are the gigantic "Glass of Water," the experimental "Rainy Day," and the beautifully melancholy "Prospekt's March/Poppy Fields." Overall, the album is a mixed bag of sorts, but one that's generally more enjoyable than not.--Danny McKenna
