Free Music Notes for X&Y AlbumFree Music Review: `X&Y' May Be Loved & Hated, But Not Denied. Hit: 5 StarsColdplay's third studio effort and follow-up to the wildly successful 'A Rush of Blood To The Head', is an album made to sound as epic as its band. From the opening cosmic waves in `Square One', Chris Martin and the group are unmistakable in generating a record far more massive than its predecessors. That isn't to say however, that `X&Y' is too distant from the band fans have come to adore, but everything here is significantly amplified.
Vocals and lyrics alike are soaring to places they've never been. The rocking-ballad `Fix You' grapples with loss, while the first single `Speed of Sound`, proclaims of the everyday miracles in life. All the while, Martin pushes his falsetto higher, lower, and deeper than before like `Swallowed In The Sea', a subtle arrangement that develops into a powerhouse performance.
Guitarist Jonny Buckland and bassist Guy Berryman have never forged melodies that detract from their front man and this disc is no different. Instead, the two deliver crisp, powerful riffs that assist in crafting an album of ever-increasing ambition. Notably though, Will Champion's mechanized drum patterns are skillfully in line with the layers of electronic synths present through most of the LP.
The question on everyone's mind is whether their grandeur exceeds their expectations, and both are towering. As is the trend, Coldplay continue to diversify their palette with 'X&Y', borrowing tricks from Kraftwerk to U2, and still maintaining a dignified style all their own. The raspy, intimate crooning in 'Sparks' is gone, as is the delicate and simplified 'Amsterdam'. But while 'X&Y' may challenge the older fans, that has always been the purpose and is what makes this the quintet's most significant release yet.
