Free Music Notes for 7even Year Itch: Collective Soul Greatest Hits 1994-2001Free Music Review: Its worth it Hit: 5 Stars
I am a huge collective soul fan, so my review is obviously a bit bised. But you have to admit that this is a great compliation of songs. Most poeple remember "heavy" as the latest and most popular single from collective soul, and its an appropriate first song. I was disapointed to find The newer version of "She said" on this cd, it would have been nice to have the original, but I have a feeling that there were legal problems with this idea. "Shine" is a classic and everyone should know and love it. "Energy" is a weak new song thats not terrible, but not great. "Run" is a good song that sort in a different style tatn the previous on this album, so it fits in nicely. I always have loved "Gel", its a fun and rocking song. "Precious Declaration" is one amazing song from their third cd. "Why Pt.2" is the ony song from their latest album and really the only one that got much radio time at all. I thought it ws a good song, but not on par with the rest of their songs. "The World I Know" is another classic that I really love. "Next Homecoming" is another new one, and its still not great. "Listen" is another great song from Disciplined breakdown. "Forgiveness" is an odd choice since it was never a hit, but its one of my favorite songs so I cant complain. What I don wonder is why "Where the River Flows" was not included. It was yet another of the hits from their second cd (self titled). It could have easily fit onto the cd. Other thatn that though, the list is pretty complete, as far as hits go. Most of these songs were #1 hits, which to makes these songs perfect together. Some poeple may complain about the un-eveness of the songs (which albums they came from). The first cd (Hints allegations and things left unsaid) was really a jazzed up demo disc and is unpolished. The songs are still good, but even Ed Roland admits that he was really rushed into the album after "shine" becasme a hit. The second cd had most of their hits on it (most people think that this is cs's best cd), so it makes sense that lots of the songs come from it. The third cd had a Ton of good songs, so I recomend it to anyone who likes cs (this is my personal favorite album). Dosage was decent. Blender was not good. As for the new songs, they may grow on me, but really, unless youre a cs fan, then dont uy this cd only for the new songs. It is perfect for someone who wants to hear all of collective souls hits in one place. Really, these songs are great. Its sad to see the changes being made to the band, but really after blender I cant blame them.
Free Music Review: Their best work on 1 CD, from this Atlanta based band. Hit: 5 Stars
I had the opportunity to attended a Collective Soul concert a while-back (in March of 2001) - to get to hear their live-music firsthand. It was at the University of Utah's, Huntsman Center, where they performed alongside with another great band: Fastball. While Fastball was playing a couple of sets, with the multitudes of people getting on their feet, with the audience's rousing applause - with much fanfare - it was the "good ol' boys" from Atlanta, Georgia who ultimately shined through. They were so awesome! With vocalist, (also on keyboards & guitars) Ed Roland; Ross Childress, on lead and rythym guitars; Dean Roland (Ed's younger brother) on rythym guitars; Will Turpin, on bass/percussion; and the incomparbale Shane Evans, on drums/percussion. Shane is - without a doubt - the coolest drummer on the planet. The [Collective Soul] concert had the flashiest drum-kit I had ever seen - it looked so [massive]: It made Fastball's look so [puny]. It was capable of producing some of the loudest, rawest, most powerful "earth-shaking" sound I've ever heard in my life, at a concert. With Ed Roland's noteable song-writing skills, and his rather nasally-sounding raspy-timbre, belts-out each lyric with finese. And with the boundless-energy he possesses to exitedly jumping up and down, violently thrashing his guitar around on-stage, it's what keeps his fans coming back for more. "7even Year Itch" Collective Soul's Greatest Hits (1994-2001), is a testament to this band's well deserved accolades. It's an "epic-thriller" of sorts. It showcases all of their hits: 1. "Heavy" 2. "She Said" (which is a hidden track on their "Dosage" album), it's one of my favorite tracks on the CD 3. "Shine" (a fitting discription of the band themselves) 4. "Energy" (like I said before, Ed has it all) 5. "Run" 6. "Gel" 7. "Precious Declaration" 8. "Why Pt.2" 9. "The World I Know" 10. "Next Homecoming" 11. "Listen" 12. "December" 13. "Forgiveness." I've have a couple of Collective Soul CD's in my collection (the self-titled "Collective Soul," and "Dosage"), none of which are more eloquent, than the aptly-titled montage of "7even Year Itch;" which explains something ironic about the fans - itching their ears, for that long - eagerly anticipating a greatest hits package from this "innovative band." I give this CD ***5-stars*** for all the conscientious-work that these guys put into their music. Anyway, I'd like to thank all you guys, for being there for your loyal-fans, cranking-out all these awesome songs.
Free Music Review: Collective Set of Hits Hit: 5 Stars
This is a fantastic compilation by Collective Soul. This was one of the groups that actually got me interested in opening my mind to listen to rock music when I first heard them as a teenager via watching their "Shine" music video on MTV (I really only started to listen to rock music more frequently around the time I turned 14, and there was something about the "Shine" video that drew me in). I just wish that they would have included more songs on their greatest hits collection. I would say that many of these songs have a strong alternative rock sound with a heavy southern influence (the group was originally formed in Georgia). Lead singer Ed Roland sings with much conviction and intensity in many of the songs that one can get a sense that he really cared about communicating important messages through his songs. For example, in the song "Shine" I think that Ed and the rest of his band members were trying to send a vital message about seeing the good and what is appealing in everyone regardless if they fit into the mainstream of society (that is the message that I appeared to pick up after watching the video to "Shine"). There are some other musical tracks that compare to "Shine" in a great way such as "Precious Declaration", "Gel", "December", "Run", and "The World I Know". "The World I Know" appears to be about staying emotionally strong and laughing at oneself through the process of change. "Run" appears to be content with where you are at, and making peace with whatever is in your life regardless of what you are planning on your journey. "December" appears to be a musical number about the strong impact that someone close to you can have in all areas of your life. "Precious Declaration" appears to be about the values of freedom and staying hopeful regardless of external circumstances. My personal overall favorite song is "Gel" which appears to be about accepting others in your immediate environment for who they are, even when it may be different from someone's personal belief system and/or shatters their paradigm of their expectations. This is a quality greatest hits to have if you like 90's rock music.
Free Music Review: This Should Sell Like Crazy Hit: 5 Stars
Considering the quality and familiarity of the songs on this collection, it should be one of the best selling discs of the year. Collective Soul has recorded 8 #1 rock songs in their career thus far, more than any other group in the past decade. More importantly than sales however, is that they were quality songs. Not fad songs, that are played for a month and forgotten, but songs that remain in rotation years later. The quality of a song can really only be measured by its staying power. To know whether or not a song has any substance, or whether you just like the gimmick, you have to wait a while. See if you still listen to the song a year later, or even past that. All of Collective Soul's songs have remained in heavy rotation in my CD changer, and on local radio stations. Rarely a day goes by that I don't hear "December" or "Heavy" on the radio. This is a good indication that these songs are still desirable and relevant to the changing musical landscape, the truest sign of superior songcraft. I can identify with many of the reviews here, in that some of the track selections were odd. I know that any true Soul fan wanted to see "Compliment" on here, or "Where the River Flows." These are both songs that you come to appreciate at a new level once you hear them live. But in response to what the editor selected review said about the inclusion of "Heavy" being wrong, I have to disagree wholeheartedly. This was an insanely popular song. Perhaps the biggest rock song of the past few years. It set a record for number of consecutive weeks atop the Rock Singles Chart with 14. This CD is also short, typical of a Collective Soul CD. Personally I could listen to them all day, but I see the value in keeping their CDs short. Never once in listening to their discs do I think to myself "is this over yet?" I find in listening to many CDs these days, I need to skip tracks, or don't make it all the way through, even the bands I love. They simply overstay there welcome. Collective Soul does not.
Free Music Review: In The League Of Their Own Hit: 5 Stars
My life was never the same after I heard 'Run' in a compilation. It was just simply superb. After following up the rest of their songs in all their albums I could find, I have to say Ed Roland & Co. are really up there with the best. After listening to so many bands, Collective Soul are really on the top of my chart. I was proud to see my fav. band came out with their greatest hits album with songs like: 1. Heavy - Totally smashing song! 2. The World I Know - Remind me of the cynical world we are living in, my 2nd fav.. 3. Shine - The song that made them really famous. I felt in love with that song especially one particular part where the electrica guitar was solely played..check it out man 4. Perfect Day - Done splendidly with Elton John, this song give a nice feeling. 5. Why Pt 2 - Another song that rocks with Ed showing his solid vocal..5 stars too.. 6. Decemeber - If you like 'Shine', you should like this one too..another smash hit of theirs. 7. Forgiveness - The beginning was not appealing at first but after checking out to the end, it just left me speechless...Especially when it is the last song in this album. 8. Run - What can I say about this song. My number 1 of all their songs I heard & all the millions of songs I have ever heard in my life. It is just out of the world. The rest of the songs are pretty good as well in the album but I was quite disappointed when their greatest hits could have covered two discs. The album would be more complete with the following songs: 1. 10 Years Later 2. After All 3. Blame 4. Boast 5. Burning Bridges 6. Compliment 7. Crown 8. Dandy Life 9. Generate 10. Maybe 11. Needs 12. Over Tokyo 13. Skin 14. Slow 15. Turn Around At the moment, just sit tight as news of their long-awaiting new album 'Beautiful World' will be released soon..
