Free Music Review: Who needs Top 40 hits to succeed?
Hit: 5 Stars

I agree with the many other reviewers of this CD that it is absolutely awesome, as is the group Collective Soul itself. I also wonder if the reviewer from People just plain hates good pop/rock music or was high when he/she panned the lyrical talent of Ed Roland. I remember hearing December on the radio after the release of their self-titled sophomore project, and once in a while hearing The World I Know.

I only recently have become a Collective Soul fan, so much so that I annoy my friends by overplaying (if there is such a thing) my Collective Soul collection. About a year ago I realized that Shine, The World I Know, December, Love Lifted Me, Gel, and No More No Less were all done by the same group: Collective Soul. I quickly snatched up copies of "Hints..." and their self-titled CD. Then I went on the quest for "Dosage". I couldn't imagine that it could be anything but great.

From the opening bars of Tremble for my Beloved, I was hooked. But of course I had to see (actually hear) what else this CD had to offer. Despite moderate success of Heavy and No More No Less, my favorite songs are ones I consider "hidden gens," ones not well-known to non-fans or non-owners of "Dosage." My favorite fast, hard-driving tune is Slow; every time I hear it I just get chills up my spine over how awesome of a rock song it is. My favorite ballad is by far Needs (although there is info that this was an official single, I've not heard it get air play); there are women who've admitted that they had a weakness for this song. I didn't remember She Said from Scream 2, but I was pleased to see the band include it on "Dosage"; it is a great song musically, as well as lyrically.

At first, the only tune I didn't care for on the CD was Crown. However, upon repeated listening, it has grown on me and has become one of my favorite tracks. For those of you that don't know the history of the band, this tune is one that Ed penned around the same time as the tunes on "Hints..." but he wasn't happy with how it came across on recording. Whatever he and the guys finally figured out to deem it worth including on "Dosage" was obviously just the touch needed; it's like a cook who has the basic recipe but isn't satisified with the dish until he happens upon the right indgredient.

The only drawback to Collective Soul not receiving much mainstream media attention is that concert dates have passed and tours are overwith before I hear about them. I would love to see these guys perform live. They have done only four studio albums, but each of them is a masterpiece in its own way. Collective Soul's musical philosophy appears to be "Quality, not Quantity." I eagerly await their next musical endeavor.

Dosage Poster

Great collection at a great price.
At heart a safe if emotive and catchy middle-of-the-road rock band, Collective Soul up the prescription on Dosage, turning in an 11-song collection that stretches previous aural boundaries with mixed results. The Southern-bred quintet is literary in its lyrical leanings and thoughtful in its deft and dynamic pop-rock songcraft. Programming and keyboards are now part of the group's arsenal. Dosage's production, meanwhile, is handled by singer-guitarist Ed Roland and is exceedingly lively and crisp. The collection is more loose, experimental and modern--and less classic-rock-leaning--than Collective Soul's two previous albums. There's nothing quite in the vein of "Shine" or "Precious Declaration," two memorable, high-impact singles from the band's first two sets, though "Generate," "Heavy," and "Crown" are standouts. Ultimately, Dosage is a cohesive collection of strong songs and a smart step up for the band. It just may insure survival for a group where others of a similar musical ilk--such as Brother Cane and Cry of Love--have floundered. --Katherine Turman
