Free Music Review: The best of C.S. right here....

Collective Soul will eventually be one of those bands like the Moody Blues where you go to their show and you know every song. Their music keeps creeping into our consciousness through radio play and commercials. Ed Roland definitely has a formula he likes...but on this c.d. (album; whatever) he takes a couple of risks that payoff. The opening track for me is one of the weakest; never a good idea....but it's still pretty good....but then followed by "Heavy" which may be one of the best on a c.d. of 'bests'. "Run" was another one word song title that recieved a bit of radio play and at first I thought it was new Peter Gabriel....(That's a compliment.....) and speaking of "Compliment" this simple but instant classic is a staple of their live shows and a fan favorite.....Another totally underated gem is "No More No Less" which w/ the sequenced chains and weird sounds at the opening I thought reminded me (again) of something Genesis would do. Also, the coda of the piece... Another Genesis sounding piece is "Generate" that just brocks like something from "Duke"(mind you; I am not comparing the song entirely to a Genesis song....just some techniques and production values). This is my favorite on the disk. Perhaps the only really bad move they made was making perhaps the strongest piece on the record a 'hidden track'; "She Said" comes about 1 minute after "Crown" finishes...you have to wait for it...I didn't hear it until a month after I had the c.d. and was letting it run because I was on a treadmill. Apparently, the fans think so too as this has become on of the fan favorites of C.S. right behind "Shine" and "World I Know".
Ed's writing is based on taking a simple idea and getting as much out of it as possible w/out making the piece too difficult or complex....the complexity is all in the arrangement...This guy is seriuosly underated!
All in all, "Dosage" is a classic album and if more people were turned onto it, these guys would be absolutely huge!

Great collection at a great price.At heart a safe if emotive and catchy middle-of-the-road rock band, Collective Soul up the prescription on Dosage, turning in an 11-song collection that stretches previous aural boundaries with mixed results. The Southern-bred quintet is literary in its lyrical leanings and thoughtful in its deft and dynamic pop-rock songcraft. Programming and keyboards are now part of the group's arsenal. Dosage's production, meanwhile, is handled by singer-guitarist Ed Roland and is exceedingly lively and crisp. The collection is more loose, experimental and modern--and less classic-rock-leaning--than Collective Soul's two previous albums. There's nothing quite in the vein of "Shine" or "Precious Declaration," two memorable, high-impact singles from the band's first two sets, though "Generate," "Heavy," and "Crown" are standouts. Ultimately, Dosage is a cohesive collection of strong songs and a smart step up for the band. It just may insure survival for a group where others of a similar musical ilk--such as Brother Cane and Cry of Love--have floundered. --Katherine Turman
