Free Music Review: Great Debut
Hit: 4 Stars

As I mentioned in a previous review I feel 1994 was the last truly great year for rock music and here is another example (I know it actually was released in late '93). "Shine" is without a doubt one of the 10 best songs of the 90s. As catchy of a chorus as you'll come across. This was the hit but there are plenty of other great tunes on here. "Goodnight Goodguy", "Wasting Time", "Sister Don't Cry", "Heavens Already Here", "Reach". Just all great tunes. Things kind of drop off a little after "Breathe", but still not bad. Great debut by Collective Soul who at the time had a sound unlike anyone else. They were considered an alternative band but there sound owed alot to classic rock as well. It was a sound they would perfect on there second album and then all the lackluster imitation bands would start popping up.

Free Music Review: Production is weak, but songwriting is strong.
Hit: 4 Stars

Not much to say other than that this is a solid debut effort from Collective Soul. Good mix of harder rocking tunes like "Breathe" and "Scream", and excellent ballads like "Wasting Time" and "Heaven's Already Here", and stuff in between, like "Goodnight Good Guy" and "All". And of course there's perhaps the band's most well-known song, "Shine", which proves that 90's alt. rock and guitar-slinging arena rock don't always have to be mutually exclusive. The band even throws in a sweet curve ball with "Pretty Donna", a short instrumental with some nice baroque-sounding strings.

All in all, a darn fine album. The only problem, as I mentioned before, is that the production is kinda crappy, but the music mostly makes up for it. The followup to this album, the self-titled, is in my opinion the band's best effort hands down, but this is more than worth the purchase as well. This is way back before the band's sound got seriously watered down, before Ross Childress parted ways, before Ed Roland's extremely forced duet with Elton John, before the band did that song that blatantly ripped off Metallica's "King Nothing", and before they really went off the deep end and somehow ended up on a commercial for "American Idol". In short, back when the band were truly awesome. Just an excellent slice of 90's rock.

Free Music Review: Had it forever
Hit: 5 Stars

I have had this album it seems like forever and I still listen to it from time to time. This is one of the best "first efforts" by a band I have ever heard.

Free Music Review: Great Band Were Did They Go?
Hit: 5 Stars

I remember the first 2 albums then I never heard about them again.
The rock world is weird just as long as you are hitting the top 10,
radio stations will play you.
This is a real good album, I would rate this CD a 8 from 1to10!!
