Free Music Review: One Of The Last Decade's Best New Bands Returns In Fine Form

There are only a handful of musical acts who've made their debut in the last decade to decade and a half that I've really gotten into...Sheryl Crow, Aimee Mann's solo work, Michael Penn, The Wallflowers, both Sally and Ben Taylor, Trish Murphy, the Warren Brothers...and Collective Soul. There's a joyous unpretentiousness to the majority of the band's music, and it's never been more apparent than on their latest release, the ebullient YOUTH. Mixing the sounds and styles of their youth (!) with current vibes and their own unique flavor, the group has come up with one of their strongest discs to date. YOUTH opens with the powerful "Better Now." A guitar-driven rocker with Bowie-esque overtones, the track blasts out of the speakers, grabs you by the....um, throat!...and doesn't let go! By the time the keyboards and sax breaks come in to the mix, the track has proved it's brilliance ten times over. Definitely one of the Top Ten tracks of 2004! Next up is the ingratiating "There's A Way." A mix of 80's New Wave and 70's power chords, the song is strongly augmented by some thoughtful lyrics ("Find some words that you can say/Steal or borrow(don't give them away)/Save them up/'Cause there's always tomorrow"). "Home" has a chilling, almost robotic quality to it that works it's way under your skin. It's soaring chorus and smart lyrics ("Love only burns/When fueled by belief") only add to the track's overall beauty. There's an ache to "How Do You Love" that is absolutely palpable...from it's acoustic guitar base to Ed Roland's full-bodied vocal, the song just swoops and soars, never going over the top, but at the same time never masking the pain. By the time the strings come crashing in....WOW!!! "Him" (along with "Better Now") is probably my favorite track off of YOUTH. There's a simplicity to it that's captivating, but also a universality that can't be denied....we've all been there ("Was it him?/Was it me?/Were his lies easier than my truth to believe?"). Add some hypnotic guitar work, muted percussion and hand claps - I'm a sucker for hand claps! - and you have one of Collective Soul's Top Five best songs to date! Things heat up with "Feels Like (It Feels Alright)", a crunchy slice of garage thrash. If the power pop guitar chords of this little gem don't have you up on your feet and pogoing by song's end, well, you have lead in the trunk! You can't help but be transported to another musical era by this piece of pop perfection! Things are toned down a notch or ten with the gently rocking "Perfect To Stay." With it's jangling acoustic guitars, heartfelt vocals and clever lyrics ("See, I have a line, though it's subject to change/I once had a thought but then I gave it away"), this is the kind of intelligent pop you just don't see enough of today. Brilliant! Things once again heat up with the growling "Counting The Days"...I can just picture Slade or the Runaways pounding out this slamming slice of rock and roll, hair flying everywhere, smiles on everyone's faces cuz they KNOW they're doing what they love! The song's glam elements never sound dated; instead, they're combined with a fresh, contemporary vibe, resulting in an original, creative sound. Another one of YOUTH's true high points! "Under Heaven's Skies" is a gorgeous power ballad without all the ugly implications of that particular genre. The playing is tight, the vocal is honest, the lyrics delicate. A true beauty. "General Attitude" is a fun album track , more filler than anything, but it fits in nicely, and has a cool, upbeat feel to it. Things wrap up with "Satellite", a delicate confession of love, devotion and commitment. Mark my word, this song will be sung and/or played at many weddings to come! So do yourself a favor and pick up YOUTH....not only is it one of Collective Soul's best albums, it's one of 2004's best as well (As with all my 2004 release reviews, I'm giving the disc an additional half a star for including the lyrics)!
