Free Music Notes for Collie BuddzFree Music Review: like some songs, unoriginal sound Hit: 2 StarsThere are some songs on this album that I really enjoy and would be could for the club. "Blind to You" "Let me Know" "Mamacita" and "What a Feeling." However, he sounds exactly like Wayne Wonder from six years ago from his album No Holding Back. I didn't know if Collie Buddz was an individual singer or a group, so I actually thought it was a group of Wayne Wonder's until I looked on his website to find out it was a guy named Colin Harper. Even some of the beats sound exactly like Wayne Wonder beats. I would estimate that I thought it was Wayne Wonder on more than half the songs before I looked. Some pretty good songs unfortunately I thought it was a huge rip off Wayne Wonder and I don't know if thats supposed to be good or bad?!?!
Free Music Review: DUTTY WEED Hit: 2 StarsCOLLIE BUDDZ: Perhaps the best way to sum up COLLIE BUDDZ - and without necessarily meaning this in a derogatory way - is Sean Paul-Lite, definitely aimed at the US market with its crossover-ready combination of hip hop, dancehall and pop reggae. It's a bit fluffy, a bit tasteless and not particularly satisfying. Nonetheless, Bermuda-raised Colin "Collie Buddz" Harper definitely comes equipped with some skills, and he does shake out some serious vibes from time to time. Lead single, the herb anthem COME AROUND, was a deserved hit in Europe and later in the Caribbean with its catchy vocal melody and classic reggae horns, and I also liked the Black Chiney-produced BLIND TO YOU, which is a convincing cultural cut. Aside from these and the Tony Kelly "bonus" production, UNTIL TONIGHT, it all sounds very much middle-of-the-road to me, which is a bit of a let-down when you take into account some of the hired hands at the mixing desk (Supa Dups, Stephen McGregor, Bobby Konders). MY EVERYTHING is pretty dire, and I don't rate the super-lightweight MAMACITA either, but otherwise there's nothing either truly terrible or truly terrific - it just doesn't add up to very much at all.
Collie Buddz' freshly-inked deal with major player Columbia seems like a real compromise to me, especially when you consider the number of Jamaican and other Caribbean artists - including Sean Paul - who've had take the long way around, putting in countless unpaid and uncredited hours in rundown studios in return for the slightest sniff at a decent recording contract. I definitely don't want to sound grudgeful, because Collie Buddz has plenty of very real potential, but this splashy, flashy, super-glossy debut isn't going to do much for his credibility with long-time dancehall and reggae listeners -- something tells me that that's not Columbia's market anyway, and despite a couple of high grade highlights, this particular collie bud smells more like dutty ditch weed to me.
Free Music Review: If you love hip-hop, get this CD. If you love Reggae, I would pass... Hit: 2 StarsFirst off, I know I'm gonna catch hell for writing a bad review for this album when everyone is giving it 5 stars, but I just want people who are thinking about buying this CD to know what they will be listening too. That being said, this is not reggae. This is hip-hip from a white artist with a Caribbean/Bermuda accent, who mixes some reggae grooves into two songs (tracks 1 and 2). The rest of the CD is pretty much straight up hip-hop. Now, Collie Buddz is a talented guy, but I don't agree with people who promote him as a reggae artist. Real REGGAE music comes from artists like Lee "Scratch" Perry, Burning Spear, Peter Tosh, The Wailing Souls, Culture, Mikey Dread, the Roots Radics, and Bob Marley. What I'm trying to say is that fans of real reggae music, particularly ROOTS reggae, will not enjoy this CD. Fans of hip-hop and Sean Paul crap will go crazy over it. And like I said, Collie is a talented guy, and I did find a few songs enjoyable. But come on people, this is not reggae music. In fact, this album is far from the origins of real roots reggae. So until you reviewers know your history about the genre, categorize this album where it belongs. Thank you.
