Free Music Notes for Finding ForeverFree Music Review: 5 Stars
Finally an album that speaks to and preaches positiveness to the masses! Well, that's something that we should expect from such a conscious brotha. But, the timing of the release of this album is good because hip-hop is going in such a contrary direction namely gangsta/explicit/misoginistic rap. Common's music, and in particular, this album sets the bar for what hip-hop or rap music should sound like. His style and even lyrics remind us of the art of lyricism. To be sure, listen to "The Game" (7th track on this album). You will find that it brings out Common's underlying message about hip-hop where it's from and where it's going. "Finding The People" is getting a lot of radio play. I'm glad about that because this track just nails the entire album. If you like this song, then you'll love the rest of the album because all of the other songs have similar strong background vocals and beats (thanks to Kanye West and DJ Premier). His lyrics are solid (also thanks to Kanye and numerous others including the Isley brothers on one track, Stevie Wonder on another, D'Angelo on yet another, etc.). You get the point. This brotha came full force for most tracks on this album. I can't tell you how many times I played tracks# 3, 5, 7, 8, 10. My God, bless his soul. (I also recommend his previous album "Be" that one is a GREAT one as well--thanks to the musical influence of Kanye. I'm not a big fan of him per se, but you have to give it to Kanye he has the musical genius to make extraordinary beats.) Anyway, get this album (or both) and you will not be disappointed. Common laid it down for us, blessed us, fed us, and quenched our thirst for some long awaited positive hip-hop. Refreshing!!
Thanks Common!
Bless up!!

You can always expect something diverse from Common. "Finding Forever" isn't quite on the level of "Be", which I thought was his best work to date. But it's a real solid disc just the same. The intro to the record is soothing. The strongest tracks in my opinion are (7),(3),(12),(8),(9),(11),(4),(2). The (2) track "Start the Show" is an excellent song which mentions Noble Drew Ali. It's a rarity that an M.C. mentions one of our icons. The third cut "The People" is an excellent song as well and what people call conscious rap. The 4th song "Drivin me Wild" is the radio friendly joint, dropped right out the gate. I didn't feel it at first but after I heard it a few more times, I began to like it, more & more.
Southside which is the 6th track features Kanye West. I can feel Kanye on his own records, but for some reason not the collabos, especially this one. The seventh selection "The Game" is the strongest track. You could tell right away the legendary Primo is involved. The lyrics & beats to this song are top shelf. The 8th song "U Black Maybe" is mellow & insightful, sounds like old school Coonga drums were utilized toward the end. In the 9th selection "So far to go' Di Angelo makes a comeback of sorts. This song has an old school feel synthesizers and all. Number eleven "Misunderstood" is a very good song though on the hauntingly melancholy side. Twelve "Foreever begins" is another thought provoking & inspiring song, with Common's Pop's closing it out. Common's an M.C. that has something to say and a positive vibe to feel in his music. With Pharoahe Mounch, and Talib Kweli dropping CD'S around the same time not to forget Public Enemy as well, Hip Hop might be ready for a revival.
Free Music Review: Still doing his own thing Hit: 5 Stars
I admit it has been more than awhile since i've bought a Common cd. Not sure of the last one, but i do know one thing. I will be getting his other cds that he's released very soon. Listening to "Finding Forever" made me remember what i loved about hip hop in geneal MCs with a tight flow, meaningful lyrics and rapping about worthwhile things. I can't really rate this cd compared to his recent ones since i dont have those as of yet.
But i do know that this cd will get much play from me and i'm sure others will get in on this as well. Even after 15 years in the game, Common still hasnt lost his love for hip hop in the least. Hmmm, pick a song that hit me more than any other that would have to be "Forever Begins". I don't know it just does something for me that makes me think about the song long after it has stopped playing. I believe that is the goal of a song to have you thinking/debating on it way after.
I enjoyed other tracks on the cd as well a lot. Like "Start the Show", "The People", "U, Black Maybe", "So Far To Go" with D'angelo (love his music) and "Southside" with Kanye.
Others that will get plenty of play as well:
"I Want You" w/will.i.am
"The Game"
"Break My Heart"
"Misunderstood"
In the realm of rappers trying to be hard and having nothing but disrespect for women out there. It's really heartening to see Common come along and kick that trend to the side and give the respect as it is due.
"Finding Forever" i hope that it finds its way into many people's CD collections.

Common is definetley one of those people that can save Hip Hop these days. Hip Hop Like Nas said is plumeting to almost nuthin now, I think the reason is because the struggles from back then are different from now, sure people from the Ghetto are still living a hard life but its still tolerable and back then it was inevitable and effecting pretty much everything and everyone around you. Basically I'm sayin that it is hard to find real inspiration to rap about that a lot of people can relate too.
This album "Finding Forever" is as deep as the title implies. Similar to "BE" (Commons previous Album) there are 12 tracks with a time limit less than an hour. I'm startin to think that albums with less tracks are better because it doesn't force you to keep skipping a song you don't like but since there are less songs you don't have to skip because there's barely stuff to skip over. The album is already a Grammy Winner to me cuz the rhymes, the beats, and the messages are deep enough that you cannot complain with because its the truth. The album is diverse but not too much. My personal favorites are "The People", "The Game", "Misunderstood", and "Forever Begins". Common is one of very few rappers that actually care about the music then the women, the money and all that s*** but he actually loves makin the music........THis is real hip hoop music not the A bay bay bulls***, and whatever dances there comin up with these days but this is why Common is considered to be a legend veteran because he is one of very few that keep to the roots of True Hip Hop.
Free Music Review: Common does it again!!! Hit: 5 Stars
I've been waiting months for Common to release "Finding Forever." So, when MTV leaked the album on their website the Friday before its release date, I listened to the whole album, cover to cover, four straight times. And like others, I was the first dude outside of a Best Buy to buy my own copy when the store opened the following Tuesday.
In short, it's a fantastic CD that proves (without question) what Hip-Hop "IS" and "CAN STILL BE" amidst the "A Bay Bays," the "Pop, Lock and Drop Its," and the other songs out today that get major airtime now, but will be distant memories a year from now. It's a wonderfully crafted blend of conscious lyrics, great beats and outstanding creativity. The intro sets the tone for you to clear your mind and mellow out, but once "Start the Show" hits, you KNOW you're in for something.
Many people are comparing it to classics like Resurrection, Like Water For Chocolate and Be. The biggest of these discussions seems "Be" vs. "Finding Forever." I honestly can't decide and quite frankly, I don't want/need to.
What "Finding Forever" DOES is raise the bar for Hip-Hop and Common's formula should challenge artists to make a "Quality" CD from start to finish. So what if the CD is less than 50 minutes. I'm so glad (for the second time in a row) that he didn't lace the CD with unnecessary skits that waste iPod space. My favorite tracks are Start The Show, I Want You, Southside, The Game, So Far To Go and Break My Heart.
Common, Thank You. Hip-Hop isn't Dead.
