Free Music Notes for Finding ForeverFree Music Review: Finding Forever - Fantastic! Hit: 5 StarsI became a Common fan with "BE" and I didn't think he could out-do himself but "Finding Forever" is fantastic. "Misunderstood" is my number one, but the other cuts are all great. When artist, like common, take their time they make good choices and good music.
Free Music Review: Timeless Search Hit: 5 StarsFinding time within the soul competing with popularity and ignorance of today Common's uncommon delivery of consciousness for timeless release Finding Forever. As the "Intro" may suggest another aspect of hip-hop/rap that is seldom seen and or heard, this instrumental keys on the albums direction with wonder and growth. Mostly collaborated with Chicago's representer Kanye West produced eight of the twelve tracks. "Start The Show" sharp delivery "...with twelve monkeys on stage it's hard to see who's a guerilla / you was better as a drug dealer..." verbal attacks are piercing over the harmonic, orchastrated track perfect as the opening of the album. Taking a more classic hip-hop feel of the genre's earlier years with a two-tone composition on "The People" expose the lyrical content as "The Game" with a looped sample and drum patterns. Tales of lost souls trying to be other than yourself on "Drivin' Me Wild" featuring Lily Allen finds solutions to problems. Lust, love and infatuation of "I Want You" was produced by Will.i.am contains mystic tones on an upbeat. "Southside" featuring Kanye West has a hard rock edge where the two takes turns representing Chicago. Stereotypes and habits of our culture "U, Black Maybe" display the path and the distance to our destination closely tailgated by "So Far To Go" featuring D'angelo. Upliftment of women of color with a soulful production by Dilla for "So Far To Go" with good vibes intended as "Break My Heart" in search for a mate. Taking a blues theme and feel with Common's tales of life on "Misunderstood" because of choices and lost dreams is a perfect contribution to this LP. Flowing over vocals to conclude the Finding Forever on "Forever Begins" has a pro-life approach. As prolific as the thoughts manifested in lyrics, Common breaks common ground with this as it proves to be as meaningful as music supposed to be. Uplifting, thought provoking, rhythmatic and spiritual all in the same drums. (I purchased the clean version mistakenly, but either version serves justice for the message which I found.)
Free Music Review: Confused is what I felt while listening to this CD. Hit: 3 StarsAnd I've noticed that I don't share the same opinion as most who have posted reviews about this CD. I'm even prepared to get a couple of thumbs down. But I can't just sit here and pretend that I liked the CD, because I didn't.
For starters, the 3 good songs here are:
The People
Drivin' Me Wild
Misunderstood
The problem with the song, The People is that he repeats himself over and over again. Drivin' Me Wild, however, was an unexpected surprise. The song features Lily Allen, a music industry n00b who I haven't quite figured out why she's so popular. To be honest, I didn't even expect to like the song before hearing it. But I do. Misunderstood just has a killer beat. Very addictive. But the main problem with even the good songs, is that Common has probably made better songs than these here.
The D'Angelo song just pissed me off because D'Angelo has such talent and the song itself doesn't really carry its own weight. And don't get me started on Start The Show and Southside - both of these showcase that Kanye has lost a bit of his creativity as a producer. And the latter is very annoying when Kanye repeats south SIDE, SIDE, SIDE, SIDE, SIDE, SIDE. The worst song is probably Break My Heart though. I don't think it's the greatest sample and the rest of the production seems lazy. Kanye can do SO much better. Check out his 2005 hit (at least it was in my opinion), I Changed My Mind by Keyshia Cole. That's how you produce a good song!

It wasn't a total loss but I'm still not proud to own this CD.
Free Music Review: Too soon after his classic album, "Be" Hit: 2 StarsCommon is a far more talented lyricist than this album indicates. It's possible that the recent mainstream success of the classic album "Be" influenced his change in style and perhaps even developed some complacency in his creating this newest project, but this is definitely a sub-par effort on his part. As someone who has been a fan since the late 90s, I recognize his talents and what he is capable of and this is not an accurate representation of the artist Common has portrayed himself as over the years. If the majority of your exposure to his music is "Be" then you may be quite pleased with "Finding Forever." If you have a greater reference point to which you can compare his latest music, you will most likely be disappointed.
This line from "I Want You" illustrates how lame some of the lyrics are:
"A dreamer so I'ma keep dreamin' on, it's kinda like the break up of Jen and Vince Vaughn"
What the hell is that about? Jen and Vince Vaughn? That relationship should never be referenced in any song let alone a song by one of the premier hip hop artist of his time.
