"Universal mind control" is rapper Common's eighth CD, and the follow up to his Grammy winning #1 album "Finding forever".
Largely produced by The Neptunes, the CD comprises just 10 tracks clocking in at about 38 minutes. Lead-off single and opening track is the bouncy "Universal mind control" with stabbing synths which features Pharrell and which rhythmically reminds me a wee bit of Madonna's "Candy shop" (also Neptunes produced).
"Punch drunk" is a more laid back groove and features Kanye West. "Make my day" is a bouncy number with buzzing synths and soulful harmonies courtesy of Cee-Lo. With a buzzing riff and skittery beats is "Sex 4 sugar" which has an electric feel. Taking the tempo down again is "Announcement" which features Pharrell.
"Gladiator" has a hard hitting riff and heavy beats with fleeting horns alternating with calm piano-tinkled choruses, and name checks Nelson Mandela and Will Smith among others. "Changes" starts off with sounds of rushing water and chirping birds before leading into a breezy acoustic-tinged soulful ballad featuring Muhsinah, while the string swathed "Inhale" has nice clipped beats. More upbeat and dance tinged is "What a world" featuring Chester french, and closing is the synth Pop of "Everywhere" which features Trip Hop songstress Martina Topley-Bird lending her airy vocals to most of the verses and Common providing a brief rap over a bouncy beat.
This album sounds very unlike his previous two releases "Be" and "Finding forever", it leans more to the Dance/Pop side with Common still getting his heavy social conscious lyrics across. My only complaint is the brevity of the disc. Superb!
