Free Music Notes for Company (2006 Broadway Revival Cast)Free Music Review: Excellent Cast Highlights Revival CD Hit: 5 StarsThough this revival doesn't capture the "magic" of the original recording, it is nonetheless excellent!
Headed by the terrific Raul Esparza, the revival cast handles Mr. Sondheim's score quite well .. though I think the recording does not quite do justice compared to seeing them live.
Best tracks include:
Company
Sorry-Grateful
Someone Is Waiting
Marry Me A Little
Side By Side By Side / What Would We Do Without You?
Being Alive
Free Music Review: Faaantastic! Hit: 5 StarsThis cd is a must-have after seeing this show! I compare the cast to a deep bench on a sports team...talent, talent, talent!
Free Music Review: A fine performance and addition; and the original stands as well, for sheer humanity Hit: 4 StarsThis really is a fine performance and I'm happy I purchased it. But as I listen to it, I sometimes miss the idiosyncracies of the original. And by that I mean the ordinary voices at times, the character behind them, the essence of human beings. The voices here are wonderfully nice--at times often better than the originals--but in being so nice, some character seems missing, and some sharpness and bitterness and resignation and joy--what some might feel is part of the essence of being Company.
On a first listening, much of this does seem to come out with Raul Esparza in the lead role, and one senses the character's personality and angst behind the fascade.
A few months from now, I likely will be listening to this recording on the basis of its high quality. And I likely will listen to the original when I want to feel the beings beneath the surface, as painful as that might be.
Free Music Review: Excellent recording Hit: 5 StarsNow I can not say that I liked this revival more than Sweeney Todd but this production is an excellent production of "Company." The show, although over thirty years old does not seem out dated or out of place. It feels fresh and new both on stage and on disc. Nothing can beat the symbolism that you can see and feel when you see this show on stage but the recording does a great job at capturing the feel of show. The cast is excellent and Raul Esparza is at his best. This is the best revival of the 2006-2007 season.
Free Music Review: Somewhat of a revelation Hit: 5 StarsI was skeptical but have been won over. I miss a full orchestra at times but the reduced orchestrations almost always work well - and without the synthesizer, etc, the score is freed from the 70s and allowed to breath in the present. The score holds up remarkably well and is performed to near perfection here. Raul Esparza is particularly good as Bobby. I'm suprised and pleased to find I like this so much.
