Free Music Notes for Company (2006 Broadway Revival Cast)Free Music Review: Buy This for Raul Hit: 5 Stars
No this doesn't have the full orchestrations of the original Broadway cast album but the new orchestrations for a chamber orchestra are fine. I think this is a very good recording of the show and it's impressive that the cast not only sings but plays their own instruments. This is an energetic recording and it's exciting to hear the Sondheim score once more.
But the ultimate reason to own this recording of Company is Raul Esparza. I've seen several productions of the show (including the OBC) and he is the best Bobby I've ever seen.
February 2010: I just listened to this CD tonight and some time has passed since I saw the revival. I think this is a remarkable cast album, listening to it now away from seeing the stage production. Of course I like the OBC recording but this one is a must have if you like the score. Esparza's versions of Someone is Waiting, Marry Me a Little and Being Alive are fantastic. He should have won the Tony, not David Hyde Pierce.
Free Music Review: Almost perfect Hit: 5 Stars
Having been a huge "Company" fan for years, I was excited to see it being revived once again in New York. I had seen the first revival in the '90s, and wasn't impressed. This time around however, I was completely thrilled. Raul Esparza is the definitive Bobby, both as an actor and a singer. But what really sets this recording apart from the others is the casting of musicians in all the roles; since the cast does double-duty as the orchestra, they all have the musical "chops" to nail all the vocals as they've never been nailed before in previous recordings. Every background vocal, every harmony layer is sung with the accuracy and ease that Sondheim must have originally intended. My only qualm with this recording is Barbara Walsh; it's not her fault, but no one is ever going to equal (or top) Elaine Stritch as Joanne. But other than that small quibble, this is the recording to own.
Free Music Review: Exciting Interpretation Hit: 5 Stars
Company does not lack for good to great recordings to line your shelves. I have all the Company recordings that have been released commercially and up to now the Original Broadway has always held pride of place but it is now threatened by this innovative new recording. Raul Esparza's Bobby is so breathtaking that any other reservation about this interpretation is blown aside. "Being Alive" is the testing piece for any singer but listen closely to this interpretation as Esparza puts a different tone into each repeat of "being alive" adding depth and emotion as the song unwraps. To my mind this is the definitive interpretation. The musical arrangements can at times startle the listener who is used to the previous interpretations, particularly the origninal but this new version brings new humour and lightness and is a real joy to add it to the Sondheim collection.
Free Music Review: Another enjoyable fresh and different remake of COMPANY Hit: 5 Stars
Superb and refreshing remake with lots of added dialogue between songs. As a new remake, I found nuances to the score and the words. The recording is well done and speaks beautifully. The score is pared down allowing the ear to hear the voices better and differently. If you have all of the other cds of COMPANY, the temptation might be to compare. I do not. This cd is a worthy contrast to all of the others.Tempi is much different in some songs. There is nothing etched in stone. This is John Doyle's vision of the show and reactions may vary. I personally love it for what it is just as much as the London Recording, the 1995 Revival and the 1970 Original. They are all different and this one has it's own wonderful and distinct merits.
There is a large accompanying booklet with complete libretto, stage pix, studio pix and writer's notes.
Free Music Review: Check out Company! Hit: 5 Stars
I fell in love with this show when I saw it in NYC and I promptly bought the cast recording upon my return. This was one of those shows that I'm sure will resonate with me for the rest of my life. Although the show doesn't seem to make much sense by listening to the cast recording, you understand what its about and even though this show was written more than 40 years ago, its still relevant today. The theme of marriage and domestic partnership is still something that remains in the minds of all people; whether married or single. This cd airs out all of the thoughts that we all have likely heard or felt in our lifetime.
This cd is truly beautiful and by far one of my favorite Broadway cast recordings of all time.
