Free Music Notes for Company (2006 Broadway Revival Cast)

Free Music Review: A fine performance and addition; and the original stands as well, for sheer humanity
Hit: 4 Stars

This really is a fine performance and I'm happy I purchased it. But as I listen to it, I sometimes miss the idiosyncracies of the original. And by that I mean the ordinary voices at times, the character behind them, the essence of human beings. The voices here are wonderfully nice--at times often better than the originals--but in being so nice, some character seems missing, and some sharpness and bitterness and resignation and joy--what some might feel is part of the essence of being Company.

On a first listening, much of this does seem to come out with Raul Esparza in the lead role, and one senses the character's personality and angst behind the fascade.

A few months from now, I likely will be listening to this recording on the basis of its high quality. And I likely will listen to the original when I want to feel the beings beneath the surface, as painful as that might be.

Free Music Review: Raul...WOW
Hit: 4 Stars

I LOVE the original cast recording of COMPANY. However I am too young to have enjoyed it on Broadway. When I heard John Doyle was adding his "double duty" magic and bring one of favorite current Broadway voices, Raul Esparza I couldn't wait! The wait was worth it. Raul is FANTASTIC. Being Alive is probably my favorite American musical theatre song in our lexicon, and Raul KNOCKS IT OUT OF THE PARK! It's worth it just for this number. The supporting cast is great too. It would have gotten five stars if the finale number was included in this recording. this one ends with Being Alive. Whatever, it's great!

Free Music Review: a Brand New comapny
Hit: 4 Stars

this recording is new in lots of ways. i love it for including dialogue. i love the orchastrations. it think the actors are fresh.raul esparza fills the theater and this recording with a new bobby more 20th century.this recording is an emotional roller coaster.by the end of the recording you feel the electric emotions from the stage prodctions that makes this the best revival of a musical this year so far.i urge everyone to buy this only if you have the original.if not buyboth and listen to the original first

Free Music Review: Give it up
Hit: 4 Stars

Having worn out two original 1970 cast albums, it's hard for any other version to live up to comparisons. Whether or not you agree with the pared-down concept, the execution was eye-opening, fresh and contemporary. And no matter how high expectations were built, we still were stunned by Raul Esparza's Bobby - one of the most memorable performances of this generation.

Free Music Review: New Company Good -- Old Company Better
Hit: 4 Stars

I DO like the new version of this marvelous Sondheim classic, but I must confess to truly and deeply preferring the original production and the original company. Nothing wrong with the voices, certainly, but the depth that the original company seemed to bring to the music and those amazing lyrics (e.g. Stritch and LADIES WHO LUNCH) can't be recreated and recaptured.
