90-year old Compay Segundo provides a encyclopedia of legendary songs and performers. Unbelieveable, deft musicianship that only comes from a lifetime of playing these songs. Listen especially to track 8 where the straight-from-the-heart singing overpowers the missed harmonies of the duet and the occassional blue notes on the picking. Similar to the void left by the jazz legends of the 30s and 40s death, Segundo is a giant--never to be replaced by the younger stylists.

I remember hearing this song (frutas del caney) when I was a youngster. I commute for over an hour on a daily basis and for the last 2 months the only music I play is from this CD. The vocals, guitars, percussion are all first class. The flamenco inspired tunes and the ever present cuban son makes this my all time favorite CD. El Maestro Francisco "Compay" Segundo is perhaps Cuba's ambassador of its fine folk music. Like many people have said, it is a SHAME that his music is barely trespassing the island's boundries in last couple of years. The vocals, the acoustic guitar rythyms and the Afro-Cuban drums are simply out of this world. You will never regret buying this CD. Long live Compay!Free Music Review: Viva Compay!

In response to the previous, poster, Ry Cooder didn't "rediscover" Compay Segundo; the latter made a number of recordings in the 90s before Buena Vista. Never mind, this is one of my absolute favorite (modern) Cuban son CDs. And no slide guitar from you-know-who!Free Music Review: Just to put it in one word: marvellous!

I can't find words good enough to describe the performance level of this artist, as my English is too poor to express what it is really like. It takes your heart, your soul, your life. Usually the artists do what they can, this one does what he wants.
