Free Music Notes for The ConcretesFree Music Review: Not a bad throwback Hit: 3 StarsI found out about the Concretes due to the former lead singer, Victoria Bergsmann. She's the one from "Young Folks" by Peter Bjorn and John, who's new band is Taken By Trees. I purchased this album used for $4, resold it for $3, and saved 4 songs off of the album. Not bad for a buck. The band reminds me of the softer, smoother side of Velvet Underground. Very nice instrumental sections, soft vocals, etc. Say Something New, You Can't Hurry Love, Diana Ross, and Seems Fine are the standouts. If you're into a smooth, cohesive albuum, without obviously forced songs, this is a good place to turn to. Recommended for fans of Velvet Underground, Nick Drake, Feist... also if you like them, check out Arthur & Yu (In Camera).
Free Music Review: You'd be better off listening to actual concrete Hit: 1 StarsThe problem with this band is their style is really boring. Too mellow, just a bunch of drums and soft whiny lyrics without any real pizzazz. The singer is annoying also, but more annoying on this CD than she is on the newest release "In Colour", which isn't quite as bad; it's a step forward if nothing else. Anyway, this is a CD full of dull music except for maybe the first song. Don't buy it.
Free Music Review: endearingly off-kilter Hit: 4 StarsI heard the song "Say Something New" on the Target ad, so I downloaded the single on iTunes, but it was very different from the mix in the commercial. This was my introduction to their sound. After I got over the shock, I decided I liked it enough to buy the whole album.
Most of the songs are very good, although there are times when they drag on or sound repetitive a bit. I like their sound, but there are times when they stick to it a little too much and it begins to get difficult telling one tune from another when you've got it on in the background when you're cooking or surfing the web or whatever. (That's why I gave it 4 stars)
If you're into music that deviates from the standard over-produced pop stuff on the radio, then you should look at this album. It's the kind of thing that grows on you, so don't buy it expecting it to be something else.
Free Music Review: there's something about the concretes Hit: 5 Starsi introduced this album to a rolling stones fan.
and he loved it.
Free Music Review: Great Hit: 5 StarsThis is a terrific CD - I discovered it late, but listen to it often. Yes, you will know the first track based on that damn car commercial, but it is somehow less annoying when it's not a soundbyte. Track two is fabulous, perhaps my favorite song of the moment. I highly recommend the CD. It is also one that I'd recommend not downloading, as the cover and booklet are cute and well worth a look.
