Free Music Review: Painting a desert landscape with pure sound...

Now Conjure One, helmed by a solo Fulber, has arrived. And is it EVER good.

Using decidedly middle-eastern sounds, samples, and vocals, Conjure One paints a dry, burning hot desert landscape using pure sound. From the very first song, "Damascus," you can almost feel the heat radiating from the speakers as you're transported to a distant, sun-baked land.

Poe's singing adds a chillingly calm undercurrent to "Center of the Sun," which is arguably one of the best songs included. Other outstanding tracks include "Redemption", with its skillful use of the vocals as simply another instrument blended into the sonic pastiche, "Pandora", which features an adventurous, menacing sound, and "Manic Star". Others may not care for the lyrical content of "Manic Star", but I feel the lyrics add a lot to the song, and the vocalist (also featured on "Sleep") has an intriguing, captivating voice.

My least-favorite track is "Tears from the Moon." No real reason, but it just doesn't seem to fit the overall album theme. Sinead O'Connor's vocals are a bit overpowering, too.

Surprisingly, the dance mixes included on the second disc are well-done and a good counterpoint to the original songs' ambience. Normally it seems that "remixes" do little more than add a dull trance beat to the original song and stretch it out into an interminable 9-odd minutes, but not here. The two outstanding tracks on disc 2 are Hybrid's "Twisted on the Terrace" remix of "Tears from the Moon", and Ian Van Dahl's take of "Sleep".

I highly recommend this album for not only fans of ambient/world/downtempo electronica, but for anyone who enjoys music that takes you to a different place and time. A very good release, indeed.
