Free Music Notes for Consolers of the LonelyFree Music Review: unbelievable Hit: 5 Stars
This is the best album Jack White has ever been a part of. And the White Stripes are probably my favorite band. But there's so much more to this album than just White. Patrick Keeler is a beast on drums throughout, LJ has some good basslines and keyboard parts, and Brendan Benson absolutely shines, especially on songs like Many Shades of Black, Attention, and Consoler of the Lonely. Everyone talks about how much more this album sounds like the Stripes than Broken Boy Soldiers did, but probably the biggest improvement to this album is how much stronger Benson sounds both on vocals and guitar. The overall sound to the album is stronger. There's a lot of start and stop/push and pull rhythms going on, and it's a lot harder than BBS was. There's some strings and Mariachi on a few tracks too, changing things up a little bit. It has some great softer moments as well. You Don't Understand Me is great, and I still get goosebumps listening to Carolina Drama.
This is easily one of the best albums of the year, if not the best. Jack White is one of those once in a generation talents in songwriting, and then when you combine it with the rest of the guys on here it sounds even better. If you like music just in general pick this album up, and go see them live. I saw them about a month ago. It was unbelievable.
Highlights
Hell, all of them. But especially
-Consoler of the Lonely
-Salute Your Salution
-You Don't Understand Me
-Top Yourself
-Many Shades of Black
-Carolina Drama
Free Music Review: Originally a Jack White Fan; Also Now a Raconteur Fan Hit: 5 Stars
I got this album because Jack White became one of the Raconteurs. I expected to only like Jack White. Much to my surprise, I really like the Raconteurs and especially this album. Although Jack's CAROLINA DRAMA end tune on this album became my top fave almost immediately, I soon found that I also was listening to Brendan's FADE TO BLACK quite often. This song made it onto the NPR listeners' top 25 songs for 2008. Then I found that I really like the first track, then the third track, especially with the piano opening and close and so on. Now I listen to all of them and so I am hooked.
I can't recall another recording artist (than White) who has branched out to this extent with other artists. Plus there have been no permanent, bitter fallings out. White has one guise with THE WHITE STRIPES, another with THE RACONTEURS, has just joined DEAD WEATHER and issued an album with them in 2009, and has worked singly with other artists on single recordings from the likes of Mick Jagger to Alicia Keys to Loretta Lynn. In all of this, he never insists on titling the record "Jack White and the {name of band}". I think that is very smart because there have been no giant breakups with anyone and he has left all musical doors open. Thus, as a fan, I can look forward to seeing him issue albums with many different other artists and blend his sound with theirs. I wish other recording artists would take the hint and do the same.
Free Music Review: Gets better with each listen..... Hit: 5 Stars
very much enjoyed the mix of styles by the boys.
keep going back to it, and it keeps getting better with each listen.
just when you think the first five songs are the highlights the cd veers into the last three that take it to another level.
alot of diff styles but everything sounds very unified with a fantastic rhythm section. benson & white are great sweet & sour vocal duo. Almost feels like a bit of the Police & Who, and some 70s pop in some places of the cd. With zep all over the mix.
eclectic but unified....
alot of fun and just in time for the car windows to come down and crank it... :)
4 great cds so far this year reflecting the glory days of rocks past, yet never nostalgic: radiohead, drive bye truckers, vampire weekend, and now this. who says classic rock is dead? ;)
an embarrassment of riches. easily as good as the heyday of 70s rock, whether stadium, punk, or new wave.
cheers
Free Music Review: Rushed to get released, but you can't tell in the quality! Great Record! Hit: 5 Stars
Jack White is so influential and popular right now that when he tells the record company that he wants this album released on a certain date or else he is going elsewhere...it happens!
Sometimes a rushed release date has its drawbacks such as mistakes in the packaging or poor sound quality. However, this album is superb in every way! The album artwork is cool with the retro photograph, the sound quality is great (the opening guitar sounds massive), and the songs are all well written and recorded.
I cannot top the other reviews here going into a whole lot of detail on the songs etc, but I have listened to the album all the way through at least 4 times. It is a little more rockin' than the first release. The guitars sound great (probably recorded really raw with an old tube amp and a microphone). It is a great album! If you like The White Stripes or The Raconteurs 1st album, then pick this one up...you won't be disappointed!
Free Music Review: Brenden or Jack White? Hit: 5 Stars
When I first heard the opening riffs of "Consolers to the Lonely", I thought, "definitely a Jack White (or White Stripes with a full band) record." While this is definitely not a bad thing, I was not necessarily looking forward to another Stripes record. I'd probably consider myself more of a Brenden Benson fan, and since there's not lots of him out there, I want every bit that I can get. As a fan of either, or both, you will not be disappointed. It may not be immediately evident, but the record is a White Stripes record with the pop grandeur of Brendon Benson (circa The Alternative to Love, maybe One Mississippi), combining both in the best possible way. A true collaboration, with artists this talented (including Patrick Keeler and Jack Lawrence, of course), we are very lucky. No track to track run down, if you are a fan of any or all, get it, give it some time if you need it, you will not be disappointed.
