Free Music Notes for Control

Free Music Review: Not bad...
Hit: 3 Stars

The incidental New Order music makes this a must own for NO completists, and the tracks from the movie that can be drawn as Joy Division's biggest influences (Velvet Underground, Iggy Pop, Bowie, Roxy Music, Kraftwerk) are great in the mix, even if I happen to own it all already. Chances are if you were a big fan of Joy Division, enough to see the movie, you would be familiar with all the contents of this collection. The cast version of "Transmission" is great; the actors performing the songs are what made
this movie much more fluid and realistic.

Two complaints though:
-The Killers cover of "Shadowplay", while not only pretty underwhelming, is out of place here and should have either been saved for a rumoured covers album (which would be... just bad) or just kept out of the thing entirely. I kind of shuddered when it played over the credits of the movie.
-Not including the cast version of "Isolation", where we see Sam Riley in a recording booth convincingly laying down this Closer track was a great sequence, nipping at the heels of "Transmission". It's a shame it's not on here.

Having a Joy Division greatest hits package would be a great way to get people into the band after seeing the movie, but that is a whole other discussion.

Free Music Review: Some wonder, some disappointment
Hit: 3 Stars

One thing that really floored me watching this film was how all of the tracks sounded completely 'new'- as if unheard before. Maybe they'd gotten New Order to do them with the actor doing the lead vocals??

I looked around for the soundtrack and realized, finally, that no- these weren't weird outtakes or something, this was actually the cast performing the track. We do get one track of the cast performing, and we get the New Order incidental music. Otherwise, this replicates something like a dozen tracks that I already own. If I didn't already own them, though, this album would be hugely recommended.
So- 3 stars. And press the rest of the cast versions already, sheesh!

Free Music Review: Am I confused or is there a song called "Control" as well?
Hit: 3 Stars

I'm a little confused. I thought the song he sings about, "She's lost control...she said I've lost control again...." would be on here, especially since the movie is called, "Control." Am I missing something? Am I not being patient enough to listen to every song on here for that segment? That was the best frigging song and the whole reason I bought the CD!

Free Music Review: If you're buying this for the new New Order songs...
Hit: 2 Stars

If you're thinking about buying this cd for the new New Order songs then you may be interested in knowing that the 3 songs put together are about 5 minutes of incidental background music. Track 1 "Exit" is a little over 1 min, Track 9 "Hypnosis" is also a little over 1 min, and track 17 "Get Out" is about 2 1/2 mins (although their running times on the cd are longer as there is dialog from the movie at the beginnings of them). This hardly makes owning the cd worthwhile to me - even being the huge fan of New Order/Joy Division that I am. It would have been nice if New Order had recorded at least one full-length song that could be taken away from the movie as a stand-alone track, rather than just doing a few minutes of snippets to be used as incidental background music. These are songs that to me will never need to be listened to again except in the context of the movie and in those times I will be watching the movie - so having this cd is pointless. The other songs are nice, although as other reviewers have pointed out most fans of this movie will most likely already have most of the other songs on here. The 11 min edit of Autobahn was new to me, having heard only the original 22 min version all these years - and that was interesting - but the new New Order stuff to me was quite a disappointment. By the way... see the movie - it's excellent!

Free Music Review: I know the movie is going to be better . . .
Hit: 2 Stars

Why such a low review? It isn't because I dislike Joy Division. On the contrary, I'm quite angry the film isn't playing around here, and might not.

The problem I have with this collection is the same one I had with 24 Hour Party People. Too much of this fans already have. The incidental music by New Order was great (and sadly looks like the last we'll hear from them as this break-up looks permanent) but no JD rarities and only one track by the cast (who by all accounts are a stunning recreation of the band, and I'd like to have heard more from). The Killers can go take a flying leap, their cover is the worst case of sacrilege since Wonderlick (a band I love) doing "Love Will Tear Us Apart." If there's one reason, outside of the cast version of "Transmission" to get a few new songs among a bunch of old ones, it's John Cooper Clarke's "Evidently Chickentown," in all its live, uncensored glory. For completists only, and that's stretching it.
