Free Music Notes for Life in the Ghetto
Free Music Review: An album which gets overlooked by his debut album.

My first introduction to Cool-C was with this album. I never had the opportunity to hear his debut album "I Gotta Habit" until much later like 1995. I only saw the music video for "Glamorous Life". For some reason I just didn't find his first album in my areas local record stores. I really liked his second album when I got the cassette back in highschool. The tracks that really stood out for me were "Star Of The Show". Any hater out there that questions Chris aka Cool-C as having any depth or substance in his lyrical subject matter should listen to that cut. The other track I really like is "Shining Star" ! Man the lyrical flow he kicks on that track still can hang with the constant evolving styles and verses that came after this release as well as the current styles and verses of today ! The other track I really like is "Ya Feelin Alright". The beat and flow on this track still sound good today ! I remember when this album came out in 1990 another rapper named Too Short dropped his album the same year and it contained a hit single titled "The Ghetto". Most of my area knew of Too Short and really gave that cut alot of play. However I was busy rocking the cut "Life In The Ghetto " by Cool-C. What's so weird about these two songs dipicting life in the ghetto is that they both dropped during the same year and came from two artists that really had different styles and one was from the west coast and the other was from the east coast. But all those differences aside when I listened to each of their songs it's crazy how similar they sound. Cool-C uses a faster beat to rap over and has a female singing the chorus "Life In The Ghetto" "Ohh Whoa Ohhh" and then on Too Shorts song "The Ghetto" he raps over a slower sounding beat and has a male singing the chorus "The Ghetto", "Talking Bout The Ghheettoo". The base line of the beat on both versions sounds similar to me. In any case I just thought I would share this personal discovery I noted when I was a teenager. I actually only purchased the Cool-C cassette when it came out and only heard the Too Short version "The Ghetto" when everyone around me was giving it heavy rotation in their cars and on the radio. "Life In The Ghetto" is another song I like by Cool-C and probably also because it reminds me of my childhood. This album in my opinion is a classic and still stands the test of time. Especially with the tracks I mentioned above in the review.
