Free Music Review: Wiseblood is a wise choice

This album, one of the latter ones by Corrosion of Conformity, is full of detuned blues riffs, coupled with some psychadelia, and served a la North Carolina. Definitely not like their early hardcore punk records, Wiseblood exhibits a more mature swagger than previously seen by C.O.C. Still heavy, but even groovier, this album seems like the natural precursor to the Down NOLA album. Throw in some fast-tempo gut busters like 'Wishbone (Some Tomorrow)' and the sludgefest that is 'Man or Ash' (featuring James Hetfield on backing vocals) and you've got a pretty tight record. Fairly solid from start to finish. 4/5

Corrosion of Conformity finally hit on the perfect lineup after a decade of shuffling members and knock out a bone crushing, yet astutely intelligent and passionate album. Wiseblood sounds not unlike its predecessor, Deliverance, with southern rock leanings and crushing Black Sabbathy riffs, but it's more methodical and deliberate and less adrenaline-hyped overload. The band lets the songs stretch out and breathe, allowing the listener to fully soak in the big rock vibe, without having it furiously hammered home. --Adem TepedelenAlternative Rock Music CDs
