About the Band:
Corvus Corax, whos name means raven, is a German medieval band formed in the late 1980s that is best known for their reliance on traditional instruments and interestingly enough appearance! Most of their songs feature extensive bagpipe and drums. Considering themselves street minstrels of old, Corvus Corax are known to make secret unannounced appearances at European music festivals, where they have always been a fan favorite. They are loud, fun, and dynamic, exactly the type of music you would want at any festival or party!
About the Album:
Seikilos was originally released in Europe in 2002. Corvus Corax had released a number of previous albums, but Seikilos was their first album released on Europe's Pica label. Fortunately the US Noir record label has been finding European treasures and re-releasing them here in North America and has managed to bring us this album as a steal of a price.
If you are new to Corvus Corax, then I highly recommend starting with the Best Of Corvus Corax. Three tracks from Seikilos are included on the Best of album. I'm also going to recommend you check out their 2006 release Venus Vina Musica, as it too is pure fun.
If you are familiar with Corvus Corax and already enjoy their Best of album, I think you'll still enjoy Seikilos. Fortunately you can sample the tracks here on amazon. Oddly enough the title track, Seikilos, did not make the Best of album, and I actually consider it one of my favorite songs. In addition to getting a healthy dose of bagpipes, the vocals on this track are amazing!
The second track, Suam Elle Ires, is included on the Best of album, and has a more traditional renaissance festival sound. This track is actually fairly representative of the entire album, so if you like it, then I promise you'll enjoy the entire album.

Corvus Corax are unique, but there are other bands that specialize in "mittelalter rock" (German for Middle Ages Rock). Amazon sells some of these bands too, and I highly encourage you to check them out as well! I'll point you first to Faun's Totem.

The name of this album was inspired by the column marking the grave site of Seikilos, featuring a worthy inscription interlaced with notes and lyrics from some of the oldest songs originated from Europe. Among the 12 new titles, are the Chinese Emperor's March 'Chou Chou Sheng', 'Aia', an old Germanic minstrel saying from the 9th century, and 'Ballade de Mercy' from François Villon.
