Free Music Review: SWINGIN'
Hit: 5 Stars

This date is simply one of the most swingin' of all time! It is a classic and should receive all of the accolades that go with that honor. Both Frank and Q are at their very best. Yep, I even like this one better than Sinatra and Basie at the Sands (I know... how blasphemous of me, right?). There is something about the way Frank's voice sounds on this date... a real deep, heavy, brooding, and pensive quality that I love. In my opinion, his voice didn't sound quite that expressive before that date, and definitely not after (kind of like Nancy Wilson after the Cannonball date -- it just wasn't the same). I love Quincy Jones. I think that anyone who can change "Wives and Lovers" from a Bacharach waltz to a hypnotically swinging shuffle deserves all of the credit in the world.

Free Music Review: Worthy Encore
Hit: 5 Stars

This is well worth owning, if you caught Act I of the Sinatra-Basie collaboration. The earlier album not only has better material (though Sinatra is one of the few singers who can turn mediocre fare like "More" into an infectious swinger) but the extra spark and excitement you would expect of a first meeting between these two musical twins.

Free Music Review: This album is an absolute gem
Hit: 5 Stars

I took a chance on purchasing this cd, and the gamble paid off. It definitely swings! Basie's orchestra is in top form and I can envision Sinatra sipping on some quality booze while belting these songs out in the studio.

Free Music Review: Sinatra is the best, but this album is not his best
Hit: 3 Stars

Sinatra is the last word in American song, but the music on It Might as Well be Swing is not up to The Voice. "Fly Me to the Moon" is a classic, but the country-ish "I Can't Stop Lovin' You" is awful. "Wives and Lovers" and "The Good Life" are also kind of weak -- was that Bert Bacharach?

Sinatra had a wonderful voice in the 1960s, but check out September of My Years, Sinatra and Jobim, Sinatra Swings, and Ring-a-Ding-Ding for much better music. It was kind of sad to see how American music went to hell as the century progressed(and I'm just over 30...) FS was simply the best up to his (first) retirement, but some of the songs he included on albums are forgettable.

As usual, Count Basie and the band do a great job on the music, but given what they had to start with you cannot fault them for this effort.

Not a favorite, but a few nice tracks.

Free Music Review: I knocked people's socks off at a party with this in 1966
Hit: 5 Stars

I took this to a party in March of 1966 when I was a student at the University of Maryland. The host was playing contemporary rocks songs when I slipped this on the Record player. Everybody there wanted to hear this recording. My 25 year old daughter thinks that the "Fly Me to the Moon" is one of the really great songs of all times. Teenagers today would find Sinatra and Basie great. I definately recommend this to any Sinatra buff!
