Free Music Notes for Hard Candy

Free Music Review: They did it again!
Hit: 5 Stars

I bought this CD in Venice last summer and it hasn't ventured a foot from my cd player since; it is an absolutely steller effort. From the uptempo "Hard Candy" and "American Girls" to the downbeat "Holiday in Spain" and powerful ballad "Up All Night," Counting Crows have again set the standard for smart pop-rock. While many of my old favorite bands have let their music degenerate into overproduced, atonal Bob Rockesque garbage, Counting Crows have maintained and improved upon their sound and lyrics. This album will not disappoint.

Free Music Review: This Hard Candy Won't Give You Cavities
Hit: 4 Stars

When I first heard "American Girls" on the radio, I was hesistant about buying this album. Even though I've grown to really like that particular song, I'm glad I didn't trust my initial instinct. That song in no way, shape or form sets the mood for the rest of the cd.

Adam Duritz has always excelled at writing ballads but he might have outdone himself this time. With the exception of maybe "Richard Manuel," the standouts on "Hard Candy" are the more introspective songs: "Black and Blue" and "Carraige" are hauntingly brilliant and "Holiday in Spain" sums up a familiar melancholy that comes with staying too long in one place. All three songs are damn near perfect.

As for the rest of the album, other highlights include the previously mentioned "Richard Manuel is Dead," as well as "Up All Night" and "Why Should You Come When I Call" to satisfy your late night pop fix. Lowlights include the forgettable and somewhat out of place "New Frontier" and the dreadful cover version of "Big Yellow Taxi" (And a big yellow taxi took my GIRL AWAY?).

2 stinkers out of 14 isn't bad, however, and the other tracks more than compensate. This hard candy won't give you cavities.

Free Music Review: Addicted to Hard Candy
Hit: 5 Stars

I love this CD!! I can listen to the whole cd without skipping tracks, which is why I gave it 5 stars. There are some really beautiful songs on here, like "Black and Blue" and "Butterfly in Reverse". There are also some songs to groove to like "Hard Candy" and the hidden track "Big Yellow Taxi". I would suggest you check it out!

Free Music Review: Very dissapointing compared to past records
Hit: 2 Stars

This album is very dissapointing. It does not live up to the band's past albums that are wonderful. The songs are repetitive and you feel like you've heard them all before. Very little growth. Let's hope it was just a dud and more good things are to come!

Free Music Review: Don't Miss this One
Hit: 5 Stars

A word of advice: If you think that "American Girls" sounded too "poppy", you're absolutely right- that was the point of the song. The song is a mirror image of the girl in subject: all style, little substance. Of course, the song is great- I think it's extremely catchy and fun to sing along with. Other songs, however, echo the more thoughtful side of the Crows- namely "Miami." "Richard Manuel is Dead" is excellent as well...then again, which song isn't?!
