Free Music Notes for Recovering the Satellites

Free Music Review: Breathtaking
Hit: 5 Stars

How do you follow up what may be the best debut album of all time? Well the Counting Crow's found a whole bunch of ways with "Recovering the Satellites" their second studio album. After three long years of waiting, the Crow's fan's were given RTS. The reason it's so breathtaking is that it's so much different from AAEA. After an album that successful, most band's wouldn't be too keen to start from scratch, but thats exactly what Counting Crows do. The second album is a lot darker, a little harder, and full of raw emotion. In the end the record hold's together beautifully, and delivers one excellent experience. "catapult" starts off the album, and fans listening to it for the first time may be overwhelmed at how much different it is from "august", but it will grow on you. The song is incredible. "Angel's of the Silences" is an awesome rocker that was meant to be the opening track. It's catchy, and is harder than just about anything the band has done to date and in the end is one of the best song's on the album. "Daylight fading" was the second single from the album, and though it wasn't a huge hit, it did get a decent amount of airplay. The lyrics are amazing and really show that Adam Duritz is one of the best song writers period. Another one of the album's best. After three such fine songs, it's hard to continue a streak, and the album's next song "I'm not sleeping" is noticably weaker. It's still a good song, as is anything the crows have done, but it's one of the worst songs on the album. "Goodnight Elisabeth" makes up for it completely though as one of the softest song's on the album. It's an amazing song with some of the coolest backround music I've heard in a while. "Children in bloom" is a lot like "I'm not sleeping. A great song, but once again, one of the weaker spots. It still is worth A LOT of listens. "Have you seen me lately" is a good song, but is just so much better on across a wire, as an acoustic ballad. It's still good, but if it sounded like it does on the live record, it could easily have been a hit.

The second half of the CD is a little stranger than the first, which is immediatly shown in "millars angels" which is possibly the saddest song the crows have ever recorded. It is beautiful.
"Another hore dreamers blues" is in some ways a one of a kind song. I've never heard anything quite like it. One of the most unique songs the band has done. "Recovering the Satellites" is one of those strange songs, and in that way, it is incredible. One of the best songs off the album, and one of my favorite melodies the band has done. Excellent. The strangeness part doesn't show anymore than it does with "Monkey" which is such a weird song it's funny. It's not really meant to be a joke, and the song ends up being really fun. It won't win any prizes, and isn't one of the band's best songs, but it is FUN! "Mercury" is a cool song too. I really can't describe it, but it's another one of the most unique songs I've heard. There is nothing like it. "A long december" is the album's most well known song, and has such a cool piano opening its hard not to be drawn in. The lyrics are also top notch. Another album highlight. After an awesome and unique adventure through music, the album closes with the short but sweet "walkaways" a beautiful, one minute acoustic song that is sure to amaze. All it is is an acoustic guitar, and Adam's vocals, and thats all it needs. Heres my track rating.

1.Catapult 5/5
2.Angels of the silences 5/5 (should have been the opener)
3.Daylight Fading 5/5
4.I'm not sleeping 4/5
5.Goodnight Elisabeth 5/5
6.Children in bloom 4/5
7.Have you seen me lately 4/5 (5/5 live)
8.Millers angels 4.5/5
9.Another Horse dreamers blues 4.5/5
10.Recovering the Satellites 5/5 (BEST!)
11.Monkey 4.5/5
12.Murcury 4.5/5
13.A long december 5/5
14.Walkaways 5/5 (No better closing)

In the end, Recovering the Satellites isn't the band's best album, in fact, its the third best after Hard Candy and AAEA,
but its still incredible. One of the best album's there is.

Bottom line: 10/10
