Free Music Review: A Aquired Taste
Hit: 5 Stars

When I was little, I hated Coffee. It was not so much that it was disgusting, it was just that I did not get it. it was so different from anything I had tried before. A few more sips of coffee later and i could not put the stuff down.

So, when I turned on 1492, my mouth dropped. This was not Counting Crows. This was a bit heavier than alot of there stuff. I did not like it for the simple fact that I was not used to it. But, as iA listened to the album again and again, i think I udnerstood what "Saturday nights, and Sunday Mornings' is really about.

Alot of bands like to do the same style of music, over and over again. This is not the case for this album. Alot of bands like to totally change their sound, this is not the case with this Album. This Album shows a evolution of the Counting Crows, and features the widest range of music styles I have seen on a Counting Crows Album.

Without a doubt, "Cowboys" is the best song on the album. The Adam's lyrics and voals are filled with so much anger and emotion, you can't help but me moved by it. "When I Dream of Michael Angelo" is another one of my favorites. And, the fact we cango from 'Cowboys to the lovely balled "Le Ballet D'or" is incredible. "Le Ballet D'or" is another different song for the Crows. As much as I hate to admit it, I cried the first time I heard it.

The one song I really do not like on this album is "On a Tuesday in Amsterdam Long Ago" really overstays its welcome. I am not too crazy about "Anyone But you". It starts out great, but the end just gets weird. I also find that some of the guitar solos in "Cowboys" and "1492" seem a bit self-indulgent at times (Don't get me wrong, I love these two songs)

I think this might be the best Counting Crows album since "Recovering the Satellites." What makes this album for me is how great the great songs are. Even the weaker songs still have something to offer This album shows the range of styles of the Counting Crows, and is worth a buy.

Free Music Review: Much Better Than I Expected - 5 Stars!
Hit: 5 Stars

The Crows are going through a lot of changes. Some of their original members have been replaced, but Adam, Dan, David, and Charlie are still around and each one of them sounds really good with the blend of the new members. Another couple of things that concerned me is that there is no true hit single on this album. Which was shown when they played "You can't count on me" on Letterman when many were expecting "1492". Adam has also finally changed his philosophy with old material on new albums. Usually old material gets scratched but 1492, When I Dream Of Michelangelo, and On A Tuesday In Amsterdam Long Ago made the cut even though they were written many years ago.

Yes this album is obviously not August & Everything After, but everyone knew that even before listening to the first track. BTW any future albums will not be as good as August either.

Tracks that really shine:

1492
Hanging Tree
Insignificant
Cowboys
Washington Square
When I Dream Of Michelangelo
Le Ballet d'Or - (This is a true hidden gem!)
Come Around

I seriously love Hanging Tree, Insignificant and Le Ballet d'Or the most. The only track that I keep skipping over is Los Angeles, maybe it will grow on me later.

Finally for those that say the Crows keep getting worse, I disagree. This album IMO is much better than "This Desert Life". Counting Crows CDs don't grab you right away (at least post August) they need to grow on you. If you are on the fence, give this album a few more listenings (It hasn't even been out for a week yet) and I'm sure this will grow on you as well. :)

Free Music Review: Counting Crows Back to Form
Hit: 5 Stars

It's been over 5 years since their last studio album, "Hard Candy", and the Counting Crows are back with a bang. Before the album was released the band played most of the album live at World Cafe. Adam explained everything song in detail and these songs have some serious emotion. Right off the bat 1492 blasts off and takes the band back to the more rock days of "Recovering The Satellites" (which is my favorite Crows album). Adam says the album is made in 2 parts, Saturday Nights which is about sin, loss of faith, dissintegration and madness. He says that he listened to 1492 over and over and it was his inspiration for the first half of the album. Sunday Mornings is "about what happens when you've completely wrecked your life, but you see a possibility of being differnt than that and what you have to go through to put it back together."

The lyrics are top notch and the song "Cowboys" might be one of the best Crows tracks of all time, even up there with Round Here. Such a great album, and a return to form for one of the greatest live bands in the world. I love this more rocking style and it brings back the RTS and This Desert Life raw emotion. I strongly recommend this to anyone who appreciates great songwriting. I just saw the band perform most of the new album live, and the song "Come Around" just comes to life and might be one of the new staples to a Counting Crows show. The emotion and energy that the new songs convey, wow, just simply mindblowing. A complete album from start to finish. I love albums that take you on a musical journey, and this one explores the vast musical landscape.

Free Music Review: Counting songs
Hit: 5 Stars

Counting Crows have become a band made more important in their silence. 6 years? Well, there have been several lives or best of's and such and this band has left a significant legacy made even more significant with this release. Hard Candy struck at no decibel I enjoyed until the songs got interpreted live. (Can we say wrong producer?) I think I took ten years to appreciate the beauty of August and Everything.

Regardless, Saturday Nights and Sunday Mornings is a great album. (What's with them and REM suddenly finding how to use electric guitars in a rock song? CC does it better this time) Adam's lyrics have gone from Sophomore Syracuse University to Graduate Student Midwest and this is a good thing for the most part. He still tackles obvious things like um-let's see...Saturdays Nights are, like, loud you know and party like atmosphere-hard rock! and you know, Sunday, is like chill out time, you know? Ballad man... But you still have to love him, his angst is real it appears and nothing beats sincerity when the band is up to it.

And the band is up to it here. The rockers on the front end rock and the ballads are some of his strongest. Washington Square is just beautiful.

I think, while they've appropriately taken their time, Counting Crows, is one of our best bands. Saturday Nights & Sunday Mornings show the band in a great light. A great place.

Free Music Review: Wonderfully Complete Album
Hit: 5 Stars

The music industry has really fallen apart. It's rare that an artist or a band comes out with complete albums, meant to be listened to as a whole. But, that's exactly what you get with "Saturday Nights and Sunday Mornings". Since radio stations no longer play bands like Counting Crows, I just discovered its existance this morning when the band was playing live on The Howard Stern Show. They played "Washington Square" and I was immediately drawn to take a listen. The first half of the album represents Saturday nights. It's hard and edgy, but in a Counting Crows style. It isn't harsh listening. The second half of the album is much more subdued. It represents Sunday mornings and is relaxing. The band is as good as ever here and the music doesn't feel overly produced for radio. It's loaded with ambient sounds of acoustic guitars, piano, stand-up bass, harmonica, and even a banjo. The music frames the songs beautifully. There is just enough of it there to add to the song without taking away from Adam's strong as ever voice. If you are a Counting Crows fan, you can rest easy that you'll be getting a great album. They released a digital 45 of the songs "1492" and "When I Dream of Michelangelo" to download for free from their website. They are a good representation of the songs you'll hear on the album. If you like either song, you shouldn't be afraid to buy the whole album.
