Free Music Notes for The Trinity SessionFree Music Review: Everyone Agreed It Was Great... Hit: 5 Stars
EVERYONE agreed that this was a great album. I mean EVERYBODY -- Rolling Stone, Time Magazine, radio reviewers on NBC and NPR, local reviewers, even Lou ...So i was in New Orleans to see Fred LeBlanc's last gigs as Dash Rip Rock's drummer, and i needed some music to listen to on the way home to Atlanta. I bought three CDs at Tower Records and hit the Interstate. I don't remember what the other two CDs even were, but i DO remember that, by the time i made Atlanta (a nine-hour drive) i had listened to this CD at least three times all the way through. I still listen to it every so often -- "200 More Miles" is absolutely brilliant, their versions of both "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry" and "Walking After Midnight" are eerily ghostly, and their version iof "Sweet Jane' is the third-best i've ever heard (after Reed's own version with the Velvets and 2 Nice Girls' seamless merging of the song with a Joan Armatrading tune -- Reed has been quoted as saying that if he'd heard the Girls' version before he heard the Junkies', he might not have called CJ's the best cover he'd ever heard...) A brilliant set of performances with breath-taking sound (though a bit peculiar, since they had to run Margo's mike thru one of the instrument amps) showing a brilliant band at the beginning of its best years. If you're buying only one of their albums, this is the one to buy.
Free Music Review: This CD could change your life:-) If you're lucky;-) Hit: 5 Stars
Have you ever come home from a hard day and just wanted to forget about life's frustrations and relax? This CD has become my personal form of therapy. There is something about Margo Timmons' haunting vocals that reach out, embrace and sooth me into a sense of peace that is rivaled only by the loving embrace of the one person in the world that I trust my heart to. "The Trinity Session" was recorded in a small Canadian church, with simple miking and a remarkable lack of post-production editing. The acoustics of this recording, when played back over a good stereo system, will raise "goose bumps" on your arms as chills run up your spine. Is it magic? Maybe not, but then Margo breaks into her rendition of "Blue Moon Revisited", the tubes of the VTL amplifiers glow lusciously in amber waves with blue edges as the chills begin to run up my spine. I melt into the chair as I feel her words caress my tired body.... Ahhhh yes, it washes over me, tender, soothing.... Hmmmm, maybe it is magic, if not it's as close as I've ever been. I have never played this CD for anyone who was not enthralled by the the sound of Margo's voice and amazed by the quality of the recording. Play this CD for the person you love the most, settle onto the love seat and melt... together.... Better buy two, your lover will want one of their own:-)
Free Music Review: Captivating, Unusual Performance Hit: 5 Stars
This performance was recorded in one night, in a church. It is easy to hear that it is very simply miked, and due to the acoustics of the space, the band couldn't really rock out or risk ruining the recording - so throughout the music there is a sense of restraint which helped heighten the emotions in the songs played.
The songs are all selected well, and the order is a good one, but the one that really stands out to me is "Misguided Angel" - the raw emotion of the song, of a girl running off with a guy who is "bad" for her, explaining it to her parents is charged, and if played on a stereo system capable of reproducing the detail and the subtle nuance on the disc will leave you emotionally spent at the end of it.
This disc will sound very good on a regular stereo system, but will only sound better when the equipment gets better. One of the few pop recordings out there that can take really revealing equipment and sound great on more modest setups.
While this album is not for someone who prefers pristine studio recordings, it is one heck of an album, and it was so early in their career, that I am sure they are constantly compared to it.
I highly recommend this disc for both the music AND the recording quality!
Free Music Review: It just gets better... Hit: 5 Stars
"Trinity Sessions" is the classic "it grows on ya" CD. When I first heard it, I was actually pretty bored with it... I became familiar with CJ through "Pale Sun Crescent Moon", which is a whole lot more dynamic and simply put, louder. Well, times have changed! There is an honesty here that is very lacking in most music today. While most of the music world has embraced that formulized Grammy Award sound (you know, the warbling screeching over-Midi-fied voice over soul-less mathematical arrangements), "Trinity" stands out as, well, just real authentic. Someone a while ago wrote that this sounds "inauthentic" - well, ya gotta know authenticity to appreciate it! "Trinity" is sparse, haunting, ethereal, and of course moody - but it is not boring or simple. There is a complex layering of notes and vibes here that just grows more interesting with every listen. This is a CD that tends to get heard end to end, there is no clear break anywhere, it is just like one long, metamorphosing song. Favorites? The entire CD. Well, OK, if I had to choose a few songs, it would be "Misguided Angel" - wow... the ultimate bad-boy song, and probably "Sweet Jane". When I'm in "that mood" I reach for this CD, and it sits right there next to my Emmylou Harris and Neil Young CDs.
Free Music Review: Silky mix of R&B, rock, and country/folk Hit: 5 Stars
Hold on to your socks.Margo Timmins's voice is silky, sensual, and at times disturbing in the dark, brooding, and often obsessive lyrics redolent with tenderness, anguish, and remorse. Though original in its arrangement, the band clearly pays its dues to those that they were influenced by: Hank Williams, Elvis Presley, Patsy Cline, and Lou Reed, amongst others. The album is a beautiful "thank you" note to musicians that they were powerfully touched by, but these are more than just "covers": The Cowboy Junkies take known material and present it in completely new ways, that show both their imagination and versatility. There is also original material, as well as one "traditional" piece sung a capella. The quality of the recording itself is extraordinary: the album was recorded in a church in Toronto (hence the name) and the reverberations that are apparent only serve to underscore the range and silky, almost liquid, texture of Ms. Timmins's voice. With a good pair of headphones, close your eyes and you will feel yourself to be a couple of feet away from the band as they play in front of you. The intimacy of both the themes and the proximity of the musicians is overwhelming.
