Free Music Review: Prediction: CLASSIC Hit: 5 StarsI predict this Cd will be a classic, more than it is NOW, it will be revered. I've seen the CJ's twice in person- They 'get right to ya' with their sincerity. Don't miss them OR this CD.
Free Music Review: A Disappointment Hit: 2 StarsThe one word I would use to define this album is "lugubrious". I had read a lot about it, so I bought it, listened to it, and I won't be listening to it a second time.
The album is static. There are no changes in tempo. Every song is slow. There are no changes in dynamics. The volume never changes. The songs are indistinguishable to me. There is very little range in Margo's voice. The vocals run in a range betwen middle C and middle G.
The pluses are 1) Margo Timmins has a nice voice, albeit in a limited range and 2) the harmonica playing is well done. Other than that, I'm at a loss to understand the appeal of this album.
Free Music Review: THIS WAS PERFECT Hit: 5 StarsThere are not many lot of albums that I would say this about, but this is a perfect album. Recorded quickly and live in an old church, the Cowboy Junkies caught lightning in a bottle with this one. They manange to make well known cover songs (SWEET JANE, BLUE MOON, WALKING AFTER MIDNIGHT, I'M SO LONESOME I COULD CRY) sound like their own and their originals (I DON'T GET IT, POSTCARD BLUES and MISGUIDED ANGELS) sound like old classics. The band plays with economy and taste, while singer Margo Timmons sings like she is channelling the ghosts Billie Holiday and Patsy Cline. The whole album is tinged with a late night melancholy that mosts bands are lucky to reach in a few songs. THE TRINITY SESSIONS remains one of my favorites some 17 years after I first bought it. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
Free Music Review: Life-changing Hit: 5 StarsThis record is exceptional, one of the best I've ever listened to. Haunting, moving, tender, chilling, one of the very best CDs in my collection. In the twelve years I've owned it, it is one of the rare CDs to which I always return for comfort.
Margot's voice is a landscape of its own, the interpretation of the songs is magical (interplay of bass and slide guitar, mostly), with unbeatable (and sadly over-played) versions of "Sweet Jane" and "Blue Moon". The rest of the album is also magical, veering from heart-rending (opener "Mining for Gold") to hopeful and tender ("Dreaming My Dreams With You") to completely mesmerizing ("I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry"). The musicians play astonishingly well together, to the point that together they create a completely seamless sound for each song (listen closely to "Walking After Midnight", it's magic). Really a fantastic album. This album defined a genre of its own, back in '88.
Buy this record, turn down the lights, and enjoy - it will change your life for the better.
