Free Music Notes for The Trinity Session

Free Music Review: Still their best. Absolutely magical.
Hit: 5 Stars

This, the Junkies' second album ("Whites Off Earth Now!" was their first) is still their best by far. They have yet to top The Trinity Session.

The atmosphere on this album is haunting, very present, and transcendent. Recording the album with only one microphone in a Toronto church, Cowboy Junkies made an album that sends chills down your spine.

Everything is played very slowly and there is a feeling of melancholy throughout. But in a good way. To me, this album has the opposite effect of reaffirming the human spirit, rather than dragging it down.

Back when this album came out, I went to see them in concert in a very small place (forget the name now) in the L.A. area. The Junkies had dimmed all the lights in the place and had set up dozens of candles all around the stage as the only lighting. What a concert. The songs were gorgeous, and the intimate, candle-lit atmosphere gave it an almost spiritual quality.

Get this album and play it on a Saturday night at 3 AM. It's the perfect nighttime or early-morning album.

Free Music Review: Dark, Powerful, Earthy and Uplifting
Hit: 5 Stars

I bought this album when it first came out on the strength of a lengthy article in the Sydney Morning Herald. On the basis that the album was recorded live, in an old church, for the grand sum of $200/$250 and sold 200,000+ copies within a short time of its initial release, I believed that this record had to be good. I wasn't, and continue not to be, disappointed. A reviewer below says there is something 'holy' about this recording - he/she is right. The purity, density and earthiness of this music brings tears to the eyes. Margo Timmins voice (particularly on this record) drips with honey, mangoes and moonshine! Choice covers, some original tunes and a spiritual ('Working on a Building') provide a connected but diverse framing for these musicians to display there proficiency and sonic emotional integrity. 'The Trinity Sessions' is a recording that probably should never have seen the light of day due to the general Herodian fascism of the music industry. But somehow, like Tracy Chapman's first effort, this music made it through - hallelujah!

Free Music Review: Life-changing
Hit: 5 Stars

This record is exceptional, one of the best I've ever listened to. Haunting, moving, tender, chilling, one of the very best CDs in my collection. In the twelve years I've owned it, it is one of the rare CDs to which I always return for comfort.

Margot's voice is a landscape of its own, the interpretation of the songs is magical (interplay of bass and slide guitar, mostly), with unbeatable (and sadly over-played) versions of "Sweet Jane" and "Blue Moon". The rest of the album is also magical, veering from heart-rending (opener "Mining for Gold") to hopeful and tender ("Dreaming My Dreams With You") to completely mesmerizing ("I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry"). The musicians play astonishingly well together, to the point that together they create a completely seamless sound for each song (listen closely to "Walking After Midnight", it's magic). Really a fantastic album. This album defined a genre of its own, back in '88.

Buy this record, turn down the lights, and enjoy - it will change your life for the better.

Free Music Review: absolutely cherished
Hit: 5 Stars

I first heard this album on a college radio station when I was a kid. The whole album was played, and I was soothed by the smooth vocals of Margo Timmins and the earthy musicianship of the instrumentalists. Years later, when I was in college, I remembered the heavenly music that had lulled me to sleep as a child. That led me to purchase "The Trinity Session". This CD is among my most cherished items.

Having read the production notes that used to be posted on the official Cowboy Junkies website, I know that the album was recorded live in a church sanctuary around one microphone. All tracks were recorded in the same day, except for Margo's a capella performance of "Mining for Gold". If I remember correctly, that one track was also recorded in the sanctuary, but on a separate day. For the album to come out immaculately smooth and clear despite the low-tech setup is a marvel. Add to that the spiritual spontaneity of the live playing, and "The Trinity Session" is no doubt a masterpiece recording.

Free Music Review: Sophmoric? I think not....
Hit: 5 Stars

Trinity sessions, released in 1988, followed the Cowboy Junkies first album, "White Off Earth Now." This is one of those few albums that now matter how I try, I cannot find the words to describe it. Right up front the listener is confronted with Margo Timmons' voice on a traditional piece called "Mining for Gold," and from there it only gets better. "Misguided Angel,"
"200 More Miles," and Hank Williams' "So Lonesome I Could Cry" are only a few of the highlight of this album.... And there are no low points... none at all. Margo Timmons is one of those rare gifts given to humanity. Her voice cuts like the sharpest of knives, and soothes like the coolest of salves. Micheal Timmons plays the guitar not with virtuosity and technical ability, but more like a master sculpter who wields his hammer and chisel, knowing precisely when to strike hard or gently.
You gotta hear this one.
