Free Music Notes for The Trinity Session

Free Music Review: Life-changing
Hit: 5 Stars

This record is exceptional, one of the best I've ever listened to. Haunting, moving, tender, chilling, one of the very best CDs in my collection. In the twelve years I've owned it, it is one of the rare CDs to which I always return for comfort.

Margot's voice is a landscape of its own, the interpretation of the songs is magical (interplay of bass and slide guitar, mostly), with unbeatable (and sadly over-played) versions of "Sweet Jane" and "Blue Moon". The rest of the album is also magical, veering from heart-rending (opener "Mining for Gold") to hopeful and tender ("Dreaming My Dreams With You") to completely mesmerizing ("I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry"). The musicians play astonishingly well together, to the point that together they create a completely seamless sound for each song (listen closely to "Walking After Midnight", it's magic). Really a fantastic album. This album defined a genre of its own, back in '88.

Buy this record, turn down the lights, and enjoy - it will change your life for the better.

Free Music Review: Spare, stark, and beautiful

As blue & soulful as it is lean & minimal. Extraordinary.

Free Music Review: absolutely cherished
Hit: 5 Stars

I first heard this album on a college radio station when I was a kid. The whole album was played, and I was soothed by the smooth vocals of Margo Timmins and the earthy musicianship of the instrumentalists. Years later, when I was in college, I remembered the heavenly music that had lulled me to sleep as a child. That led me to purchase "The Trinity Session". This CD is among my most cherished items.

Having read the production notes that used to be posted on the official Cowboy Junkies website, I know that the album was recorded live in a church sanctuary around one microphone. All tracks were recorded in the same day, except for Margo's a capella performance of "Mining for Gold". If I remember correctly, that one track was also recorded in the sanctuary, but on a separate day. For the album to come out immaculately smooth and clear despite the low-tech setup is a marvel. Add to that the spiritual spontaneity of the live playing, and "The Trinity Session" is no doubt a masterpiece recording.

Free Music Review: Quiet greatness...
Hit: 5 Stars

There are some albums that capture a feeling, a mood that is not lost throughout. It's a kind of cohesiveness that is rare and a special thing when it happens. Examples I have seen are "Kind of Blue" by Miles Davis, and "The Blues and the Abstract Truth" by Oliver Nelson- both jazz albums that send you to another world when you give them your full attention. This album fits right into that niche. Every song echoes and resonates, calling attention to all the little details. An occasional harmonica blast is more powerful than most guitar onslaughts I have heard in other genres, as it contrasts sharply with the quiet ringing guitar parts. The famous track, "Sweet Jane," is among my favorites here, but "I Don't Get It" is just as strong- in fact, every track is. This is a keeper and a classic, and moreover a moment where everything just came together for one small band in a big way for whatever reason. Those moments are rare (nowadays, bands like Wilco and Iron & Wine are having them, but not many others) and you should hold on to them when you find them.

Free Music Review: Captivating, Unusual Performance
Hit: 5 Stars

This performance was recorded in one night, in a church. It is easy to hear that it is very simply miked, and due to the acoustics of the space, the band couldn't really rock out or risk ruining the recording - so throughout the music there is a sense of restraint which helped heighten the emotions in the songs played.

The songs are all selected well, and the order is a good one, but the one that really stands out to me is "Misguided Angel" - the raw emotion of the song, of a girl running off with a guy who is "bad" for her, explaining it to her parents is charged, and if played on a stereo system capable of reproducing the detail and the subtle nuance on the disc will leave you emotionally spent at the end of it.

This disc will sound very good on a regular stereo system, but will only sound better when the equipment gets better. One of the few pop recordings out there that can take really revealing equipment and sound great on more modest setups.

While this album is not for someone who prefers pristine studio recordings, it is one heck of an album, and it was so early in their career, that I am sure they are constantly compared to it.

I highly recommend this disc for both the music AND the recording quality!
