Free Music Notes for Trinity Revisited [CD/DVD]Free Music Review: Two performances alone are worth the price Hit: 5 Stars For me, the quality of two of the performances is worth the price of the DVD. They are "Misguided Angel" and "200 More Miles".
In Misguided Angel, Margo alternates the lead vocal with Natalie Merchant, except at the end when they harmonize, and believe me, the result is outstanding. It is better than the original. The vocals are complemented by the whole band, but Jeff Bird in particular plays beautiful harmonica and strings.
In 200 More Miles, Ryan Adams performs one of the most transcendent and talented vocals I have ever witnessed. His clear articulation allowed me to hear words not comprehensible in the original. I have never heard a more emotional or angst-ridden treatment of lyrics, with the possible exception of the pre-Army Elvis, country music's George Jones or Wynonna Judd.
The beautiful stained-glass and altar of the Trinity Church are a great backdrop for the performances, which are tinged in blue floodlight. Others may find some of the other songs appealing. Criticism is subjective, this is just my two cents. But I would have gladly paid fifteen bucks just to have Misguided Angel and 200 More Miles to watch over and over again.
Free Music Review: A an excellent revisitation! Hit: 5 StarsThis is not just a remake of the original Trinity Sessions. It is a much more elaborate production, but still recorded in the "circle" format, although everyone is individually miked (only one mike in the original). Extra players/singers Ryan Adams, Natalie Merchant and Vic Chesnutt add a lot. I particularly like Natalie's duet with Margo on Misguided Angel. Can't get it out of my head.
Some won't/don't like the "tampering with the original" process, but really, what would you do? It's a celebration of the original, the performances are outstanding, the changes are interesting, and we're seeing a much more mature musical production. For all the charm of the original, it wasn't perfect, and this version really won me over, especially the DVD in surround sound.
This is a two-disk package, CD/DVD. The DVD is absolutely great, and the 5.1 audio is very very special. Both visual and audio quality is very high on the base recording, and the extras (a documentary especially) are very interesting, and shows some of the actual rehearsal time, working out arrangements. There are some oddities in the sound-scape. The gig is recorded with all the musicians in a circle, and the perspective provided by the sound-scape is of being in the middle of the circle, facing towards the stage with the singers. The drums are behind you, a bit disconcerting at first, but interesting.
It's really worth getting, highly recommended.
Free Music Review: Good, But Not Great Hit: 2 StarsI received the new Cowboy Junkies CD and DVD combination, The Trinity Sessions Revisited, from Amazon yesterday. Much like the old saying, "You can never go home again", the new recording does not come close to capturing the magic of the original Trinity Sessions.
When the Cowboy Junkies made the decision to re-record the Trinity Sessions, they had to know that they needed to bring their "A" game to the table. My initial impression is that the music and vocals just don't match the intensity of the original. The novelty of the guest vocalists, Ryan Adams and Natalie Merchant, quickly wears off and the music solos, in some cases, just drag on and on. I'm not saying that the CD is bad, per se; however, it's just that it made me really want to listen to the original again.
Music DVDs are always hit or miss with most folks. I tend to enjoy them more than other people. Needless to say, I liked it more than the CD.
Free Music Review: The DVD is priceless Hit: 5 StarsWith a 5.1 surrounnd sound mix on the DVD of some of today's best "alt country" (I still like the term Cowpunk) people like Vic Chesnutt, Natalie Merchant and the fantastic, Ryan Adams singing great songs originally made popular by Marianne Faithful, Hank Williams, The Velvet Underdround and Patsy Cline along with the Junkies regular lineup, how could you miss?
Free Music Review: Spirit of its own Hit: 5 StarsWisely, the Cowboy Junkies did not approach this recording as re-recording of their classic album "The Trinity Session." They realized that that recording was untouchable in its quicksilver essence. That type of excellence would be impossible to recreate. Instead they came together for "The Trinity Revisited" 20th anniversary with friends and better recording technology to sing the songs of the first "Session" to acknowledge its legacy and celebrate its spirit. It is not as though they saved all these songs for 20 years to just record them once again. These are songs they have sung for the last 20 years all over the world and now have come back to the place where they were "born." The music they have created along with Ryan Adams, Jeff Bird, Vic Chesnutt and Natalie Merchant is astonishing in its beauty and touching in the care they took recreating each song as if they were recording them for the first time. Though exact copies in content, this new recording soars with a spirit of its own ... and thankfully it was all captured beautifully on DVD.
