Free Music Review: Something of a disappointment
Hit: 3 Stars

There's not much to say about the middle section of this soundtrack, tracks five through nine. It is essentially a compilation of five "hit" songs from the past which fit the movie's theme (sexy girls in a rowdy hangout that's a cross between a strip joint and a western bar), ranging from INXS to Charlie Daniels(!). They are all good, but dated-sounding songs that won't mean much to the listeners who aren't already familiar with them. If you do know and like these songs, it's a nice bit of nostalgia. Not much to say either about track 10, called Boom Boom Boom (uh, okay), a lackluster bit of throwaway dance-club pop that's bad from the getgo, and worse when compared to the catchy and memorable Boom Boom Ba (whatever) off the soundtrack to THE NEXT BEST THING.

Four of the six remaining new cuts, tracks one through four, are by LeAnn Rimes, and sadly, they are something of a disappointment. While I am a very big fan of Rimes, she seems at odds with this material. Rimes seems to me too much of a country traditionalist for these songs, all penned by Diane Warren (the irony in this is that I am a fan of her version of Diane Warren's How Do I Live, which I think is definitely country, but was rejected by country radio/listeners as "too pop"). What is worse is that Warren, who has at times earned the description "hack", has written four excellent songs, and they have not been truly fulfilled. And although LeAnn is a very charismatic performer, she lacks the raw energy and, to be blunt, sensuality that these songs seem to call for, and that the film itself obviously has. Despite the films' pretend country/western image (which made LeAnn a perfect choice on paper), the films producers and Warren would have done far better to give these songs a more "blues/rock" arrangement, and to have the equally gifted (if not more so) Christina Aguilera perform them in the studio and on celluloid. Her amazing voice and her presence would have fit in perfectly. The final irony is that tracks 11 and 12, two lovely ballads that finish off the soundtrack, would have been perfect for Rimes with the proper arrangements. Go figure.
