Free Music Notes for Trust Me AlbumFree Music Review: Let's dance!! Hit: 4 StarsCraig David returns to form on his fourth CD "Trust me". He burst onto the music scene in 2000 with the Two step sound, (a Garage/Dance/R&B hybrid) and spitfire vocal delivery which gave him 2 UK #1's from his debut, as well as a US top ten hit, a platinum disc, and a Grammy nomination. Elton John (no less) proclaimed his the best voice from the UK. His sophomore "Slicker than your average" did pretty well too, but by his third CD, the ballad heavy "The story goes...", he'd lost it in his attempt to be like Joe/R. Kelly/Brian McKnight et all.
He attempts to put things right on this one. Recorded in Havana, Cuba, a couple of songs have strong Cuban influences; the upbeat pair of "6 of 1 thing" and the excellent "Don't play with our love" (the album title is sung repeatedly in the delightfully off kilter chorus), are catchy and rich in horns and Latin sounding percussion.
Other songs aimed at the dance floor are "Friday night", lead off single "Hot stuff" (which heavily samples David Bowie's "Let's dance" but doesn't really add anything new, unlike the Sting sampling "Rise & fall" from his sophomore disc), the dub sound of "She's on fire" (with a heavy bass line and some ragga rapping), and "This is the girl" with UK rapper Kano, which is closest in sound to his earlier Two step sound. This last track actually featured originally on Kano's CD "London town".
For ballads, we get the sober, acoustic "Top of the hill" (the lone attempt at lyrical variety from his usual "girl" or "let's party" songs), and a simply stunning pair, the retro sounding "Awkward" (with Rita Ora and emotional vocals from Craig) and "Just a reminder" (which reminds me a bit of "Lost without you" by Robin Thicke). "Kinda girl for me" (samples Marvin & Diana's "You are everything", the hundredth song to do so) is nice, while "Officially yours", is just ok.
Hopefully, Craig will continue striking the right balance between upbeat songs and ballads on his future releases. A welcome return to form.
