Free Music Review: The Greastest Rock Band in History
Hit: 5 Stars

Actually, Cream was a blues band. They were the first "Super Band", the term coined when they first played together. They have been called "The Holy Power Trio" and changed rock music in a profound way in a manner somewhat similar to what Hendrix did to the guitar. Cream was two rock bands. One was the studio band that catered to the mass public who in general are spoonfed mediocre music to make money for large production companies. The other band was the "live" band. That is were Cream separated the men from the boys.

So far, there has never been a band that could play like Cream live, and the way it looks, there never will be. Yes, in jazz you've had such groups such as Tony William's "Lifetime", the Miles Davis quintet, John Coltrane quartet, John Mclaughlin, and others, but this was rock. Cream was doing something that had never been done before. They were taking long, extended, improvisational jams that were truely extraordinary. I personally have never heard any band ever duplicate or even come close to the what was done in "Spoonful". I'm a drummer, went to Berklee, and have been playing a long time, so I feel I have some expertise in the matter.

Now, some people just can't hear what is happening in "Spoonful", and there is nothing that can be done about that. But for those few people who can hear and understand what is going on, you will be amazed that anyone could have done what they did and with power.

It's true that there are a million zillion bands that were more popular and made more record sales blah blah blah, but what I'm talking about here is musical genius. Those other bands might have sold more or been more popular, but in no way could they ever play like Cream, but there is no doubt that Cream could have played anything that any other band played. (That includes The Allman Brothers, Led Zepplin, The James Gang, Deep Purple, Jetho Tull, Grand Funk Railroad, The Jimi Hendrix Experience, Ten Years After, Santana, and all the others who could actually play their instruments.

Also, for drummers, "Toad" is a remarkable drum solo. Ginger Baker tells a story with his drums, and it's amazing to listen to. He uses double bass drums and incorporates them into the solo along with his playing in such a musical way that it's a true pleasure to listen to it. In todays world of two bass drum players and double pedal players there are a lot of people playing a lot of technical wowie-zowie licks, but Ginger has them all beat on rhythms, taste, and creativity.

Bass players should take special note of Jack Bruce's playing. Again, although there are people today that have more technical proficieny on the bass, I doubt seriously wether anyone could improvise like he did on some of Cream's live material like "Spoonful", Sweet Wine", etc. There is more to playing than just a lot of fancy technique and Jack shows what that something is.

Then there is Eric Clapton back when he could actually play the guitar with fire, power, drive, and incredible creativity. So much so that when listening to him at that time it's really hard to determine who actually was the greatest, him or Hendrix. Somewhere deep down in the middle of Spoonful and Sweet Wine and the other live songs it becomes apparent that as much as Clapton has been epitomized as one of the great guitar players in rock history, he has actually been underrated, as foolish as that may seem. But, just listen and decide for yourself.

So, if you want to hear the greatest rock band that ever existed playing the greatest live "rock" recording ever made ( Spoonful ), then I recommend getting Wheels of Fire and listening to "Spoonful". Also, check out "Sweet Wine" on Live Cream Vol. 1 for more amazing playing that hasn't been surpassed.
