Free Music Review: A Collection Of Creed's Strongest Moments.
Hit: 5 Stars

Love them or hate them, Creed was THE American rock band of the late 90's and at least the first two years of the 21st century. Eventhough they were smashed here and there by lesser groups like Limp Bizkit and Godsmack (both of whom have also lost any original flare they might have had), Creed dominated rock radio and MTV with their heavy, melodic brand of rock that plays more like drama than just the typical "I wanna get laid" moans of current Top 40. "Greatest Hits" looks back at the best material Creed had to offer, and now that all the debate and name calling has died down, we can now judge Creed's music based on its own merits. The music is a mash of spiritual questions and personal statements framed by excellent playing and crafty lyrics. The featured songs from their first CD, "My Own Prison," still retain their anger and spiritual confusion. Some called Creed a Christian band because vocalist Stapp comes from a religious family, but listen carefully and what you get is actually a confused young man angry with a religious institution that has caused him pain. "Torn" is still a snarling crawler with Tremonti providing a backing hum that makes him feel like a hard rock monk. "My Own Prison" feels like a song straight from the heart and appeals to anyone who's ever felt caged-in by religious guilt. The mood changes with the "Human Clay" era, this was arguably their best album and the songs still vibrate with energy and force. "Are You Ready?" soars and rushes forward while "Higher" is still an uplifting anthem with Tremonti sporting some riffing in the classic style. "What If" is ferocious and features some powerful wordplay and ripping guitar work. The band won a Grammy for "With Arms Wide Open," a power ballad Stapp wrote for his then-unborn son. It's still a wonderful song that appeals to the ear and Creed bashers who rip it need to have a heart for once. The twilight of Creed of course began with "Weathered" which was an album filled with some great pieces of ferocious hard rock and some so so ballads. "Bullets" still sounds like a monstrous release of energy in the tradition of Metallica. "My Sacrifice" suffers from sounding indeed like simple Top 40 fare but the album's closer, "Weathered," is a well-written, atmospheric song. Stapp was called an Eddie Vedder imitator many times, their voices are similar, true, but that's where the comparison with Pearl Jam stops. Creed might have begun as a grunge-era left-over, but eventually they evolved into a more concrete, individualistic band. For the Creed fan this CD also comes with a DVD featuring all the band's videos, including "Higher" with the band levitating and "What If" which includes actors from "Scream 3" (the song was featured on the soundtrack). There are also two good live performances, one of "Torn" where the band gives a deep, heartfelt performance and "Higher" with Stapp sporting a Jim Morrison look in a reptile-scale jacket and leather pants. Many will cheer now that the era of Creed has officially ended, but take a listen to this CD and you might just come away thinking they were no Led Zeppelin or U2, but they had some great songs and delivered material stronger and with more depth and skill than anything Disturbed or Staind has ever done. This is the CD for those who don't want the entire catalogue, just the good stuff.

Greatest Hits (w/ Bonus DVD) Poster

If Nirvana's Nevermind heralded alternative's ascendancy into the mainstream, Creed's mega-successful 1997 debut showed just how quickly--and craftily--alt.rock's musical hallmarks could be utterly co-opted by it. Fueled by vocalist Scott Stapp's Weiland-inspired growl, Creed rode the Seattle pop-suffused string of hits included here to become one of the 90's most successful rock acts--if one whose level of critical revile nearly matched its multi-million sales. This CD/DVD combo features 13 of the band's signature performances (including all eight of its number one singles), songs that often turn on a Christianity-inspired message that could be as opaque (the anthemic "Higher") as it was overt ("My Own Prison," "What's This Life For"). The accompanying DVD completes the career retrospective, anthologizing nine of the band's videos along with previously unreleased live performances of "Torn," "Higher" and "Weathered." --Jerry McCulley
