Free Music Review: Rock 'n Roll, Blues and Country Influenced - and fun too!
Hit: 5 Stars

My first introduction to CCR was "Cosmos Factory," released in the dark ages of 1970. What a great introduction to CCR. Fully 7 of the 11 songs from that album are represented on this collection of greatest hits. CCR released 7 original albums, and though "Chronicle" includes 20 songs from those albums, someone later decided to release a "Chronicle II" that included another 20 CCR songs, including two more of the "Cosmos Factory" songs.
CCR had a very unique sound, owing in part to John Fogerty's unusual, yet very listenable, voice. CCR has been called rockabilly by some, but I prefer to see CCR as part of the diversification of rock music that led to the popularity of groups such as The Eagles. Yes, there is some influence of what was once known as Hillbilly or bluegrass, but there is just as much influence from rock and roll and country. There may even be a flavor of folk music.

Sometimes the music sounds almost like classic rock and roll, as you listen to songs such as "Proud Mary." Other times the sound is almost contemporary with the early 70s in songs like "Who'll Stop the Rain." Other times the music seems to transcend all genres in songs like "Up Around the Bend," which starts out like a hard rock song, and then reveals a country base in the harmonies and the lyrics.

Then there are blues-influenced songs such as "Have You Ever Seen the Rain" and "I Put a Spell on You." "Run through the Jungle" has influences that might remind you of Jimi Hendrix, yet blues are also evident. The lyrics will recall images of the Viet Nam war. Another Viet Nam war related song is "Fortunate Son."

Occasionally CCR's lyrics create odd mixtures. "Looking Out My Backdoor" has lyrics that would fit well with many of the psychedelic songs of the era, yet is played with a country-rock style. These contradictions are part of what made CCR a great and novel group.

There are a couple of versions of this CD available. This version is a gold CD that some fans prefer when available. You may want to survey the versions available before selectin the one that best meets your needs.

I enjoy music that creates a trend without trying to do so. A true artist is one who does what they want to do for themselves. When they become successful, that is fine, but they do so on their own terms. CCR was such a group. This CD collects some of their better known songs, and is a great addition to any collection. However, please keep going after you've bought this one. You will find that there is a lot of good music left on their albums. Enjoy!

I am a huge fan of John Fogerty's solo music and his music with CCR. If you enjoy his roots-rock style then I strongly recommend that you check out the following:
1) 24 Hours A Day by The Bottle Rockets
2) Chooglin': A Tribute To The Songs Of John Fogerty
3) Banjos and Sunshine by Sixty Acres
4) Trace by Son Volt

Free Music Review: ABSOLUTELY ESSENTIAL
Hit: 5 Stars

Normally greatest hits packages are only for the casual fans and omit much of a band's best work, but in CCR's case this album contains almost all their classic, essential tracks(except for Born on the Bayou, which you've gotta buy Chronicle Vol II to get).Growing up in Louisiana in a small town during the 80's, this record was everywhere. Every one of my friends had a parent or older brother that had this album. John Fogerty is an amazing songwriter, in my opinion up there with any of the great rock songwriters of the 60's, but unfortunately does not get near the critical respect he deserves. It absolutely blew me away when I first found out that this was a San Francisco band. I had grown up believing that these guys HAD TO BE from Louisiana. They sounded like they were straight outta the swamps. To my ears, they've aged much better than other San Francisco bands. Just straight up country, blues and rockabilly without any of the late 60's trippy psychedelic flower power stuff. Some of these songs are more timely than ever, especially Fortunate Son, with all the events of the past few years. Truly timeless. This is essential listening.

This band have a song library to match anyone out with the exception of the Beatles. This includes the Stones, the Who, Zepplin and Queen. The others may command larger crowd and more airplay on the "we play anything" radio stations. These songs stand the test of time. "I heard it thru the grapewine", "Who will stop the rain" and "Bad Moon Raising" and countless others are as good now as when they were first records and rank up there with the all time best rock songs of all time.

This collection is the more complete of any of the CCR's GH. If you are not going to buy the complete set of orginals, this should be the one you own. Even if you own all the rest, this is still the one to put on and hear them from the beginning to the end of their life.
