Free Music Review: Single Disk Greatest Hits
Hit: 5 Stars

This is a single disk that accurately captures one of the great American groups of the time. Creedence Clearwater Revival was born in California, but managed to grab a taste of Southern culture through the songwriting and playing of front man, John Fogerty. The original tunes tell tales of riverboats in the South, Tin Pan Alley, washboards and hand clapping tales, as well as serious political commentary, like "Fortunate Son". The hits are amazing, from the earliest cover of Dale Hawkins' "Suzie Q", through the Screaming Jay Hawkins song, "I Put a Spell On You", where Fogerty wails like a man possessed. "Looking Out My Back Door" is a humerous tale fueled by imagination. "Down On the Corner" is story about four guys on the corner singing harmonies for the sheer love of it. "Bad Moon Rising", an ominous tale of forboding has a chugging guitar that supplies rhythmic fill. "Up Around the Bend" begins with a searing guitar riff that flies into a powerful song. There is a second disk that is a good companion greatest hits, and a great box set that is more comprehensive, but this one of the best and most affordable "Greatest Hits" collections you can get.

Free Music Review: All the big UK and USA hits are here
Hit: 5 Stars

All the big UK and USA hits are here

This group combined elements of pop, rock, blues and R+B in their music and you can hear all the different influences here. For example, I put a spell on you is a great piece of blues-rock, but Proud Mary is raw rock'n'roll.

As far as hits are concerned, the group were more consistently successful in America than in Britain. In America, they had many big hits including several that peaked at number two without ever achieving a number one hit. In Britain, their overall record was more modest although they clocked up four top ten hits - and Bad moon rising went all the way to number one. Their other UK top ten hits were Proud Mary, Travelling band and Up around the bend (which made the top three).

Among the other classic songs here are Green river, Down on the corner, Fortunate son, Who'll stop the rain, Looking out the back door, Long as I can see the light and Have you ever seen the rain. All of these were either huge American hits, or were B-sides of those hits.

A companion to this collection, Chronicles volume 2, explores their album tracks in greater depth but this collection contains all the essentials.

Free Music Review: Nearly perfect hits collection
Hit: 5 Stars

CCR specialized in rootsy pop-rock: Touches of R&B, blues, and rockabilly stewed with a Nawlins flavour and embellished with John Fogerty's gravelly drawl. If you listen to oldies or classic rock radio, you've heard these songs so I won't spend a lot of time detailing what they're all about.

Absolutely EVERY one of the band's Top 40 hits is here. On that score, there's nothing else that needs to be said. If you want their chart hits, they're here..ALL of them.

My only quibble...a very minor one...is that 1 song, their cover of Marvin Gaye's "I Heard it Through the Grapevine", wasn't really a chart hit. I applaud them for filling the CD space, but if they were going to judiciously choose a single track to complete the disc, "Born on the Bayou" (also not a chart hit but still popular) would have been the obvious choice. The fact that that song ends up on CHRONICLES, VOLUME 2 feels like Fantasy's attempt to force the average fan to pay up another 10 smackers to get it.

BOTTOM LINE:
You want a comprehensive overview of every hit Fogerty and Co. had as a band? Here ya go.

4 1/2 stars

Free Music Review: ABSOLUTELY ESSENTIAL
Hit: 5 Stars

Normally greatest hits packages are only for the casual fans and omit much of a band's best work, but in CCR's case this album contains almost all their classic, essential tracks(except for Born on the Bayou, which you've gotta buy Chronicle Vol II to get).Growing up in Louisiana in a small town during the 80's, this record was everywhere. Every one of my friends had a parent or older brother that had this album. John Fogerty is an amazing songwriter, in my opinion up there with any of the great rock songwriters of the 60's, but unfortunately does not get near the critical respect he deserves. It absolutely blew me away when I first found out that this was a San Francisco band. I had grown up believing that these guys HAD TO BE from Louisiana. They sounded like they were straight outta the swamps. To my ears, they've aged much better than other San Francisco bands. Just straight up country, blues and rockabilly without any of the late 60's trippy psychedelic flower power stuff. Some of these songs are more timely than ever, especially Fortunate Son, with all the events of the past few years. Truly timeless. This is essential listening.

Free Music Review: John, you need six stars my man....
Hit: 5 Stars

There is no one like John Fogerty. There is occasion in one's life when you look back and say...ok...if you give me one musician in the world...who would I want to spend an evening with...who would I want to say thank you personally to? Who would I want to say...you are my memory of then, now, and the way you are going John...into the future. John Fogerty. This album is a no brainer...there is not a bad song on here. Fact is there is nothing less than a superb song on here. I recently saw John on Crossroads with Keith Urban. If you have not seen that watch for it. Here is a pure legend...serious pure legend...in John Fogerty, and through that whole show you can tell that John throws the spotlight over to Keith. Granted...Keith is awesome...but such a humble and caring man in John. I digress. Trust me that this is an awesome album...and trust me that if it has the name of John Fogerty on it...it is pure legend...pure class...and pure good guy. Nuff said except one more thing. John...I love ya man...thanks for some awesome memories and some awesome tunes. I look forward to traveling with you into the future. Kick butt my friend. Kirby
