Free Music Notes for Chronicle Vol. 2: Twenty Great CCR Classics

Free Music Review: Don't kid yourself Greg..
Hit: 5 Stars

For most of us, Voulume one is enough, it contains all the hits.

Free Music Review: Love CCR.
Hit: 5 Stars

Great sequel to volume #1. If you get #1 this is a must have.

Free Music Review: A fine complement to Chronicle
Hit: 4 Stars

Chronicle Volume 2: Twenty Great CCR Classics proves that Creedence Clearwater Revival was not just the great singles band as presented on Chronicle. The tracks "Born on the Bayou" and their sizzling cover of "The Midnight Special" are the only songs that still receive airplay on album-oriented rock stations and are among their best work. There are actually a lot of cover songs that work on varying degrees. While the R&B-flavored "Night Time Is The Right Time", the Southern sounds of "Cotton Fields", and the rollicking "My Baby Left Me" work very well, their versions of "Good Golly Miss Molly" and "Before You Accuse Me" are decent at best. When they stick to their originals, the results are very solid as exhibited on "Tombstone Shadow" and "It Came Out of the Sky." There's also a noticeable rockabilly sound here as shown on the Ricky Nelson cover "Hello Mary Lou" and "Don't Look Now." A pleasant surprise in this collection are the opening "Walk On The Water" and the scorching "Pagan Baby", songs which prove that CCR could have been a great jam band if they chose that route. Other solid tracks here include the rocker "Born to Move" and the melancholy ballad "Wrote a Song for Everyone." A few of the songs near the end such as "Molina" and "Lookin' for a Reason" showed the band was running out of steam creatively hence their breakup soon after. While not containing as many top notch tracks as Chronicle (what greatest hits album does?), Chronicle Vol. 2: Twenty Great CCR Classics shows that the band was more than just those fantastic 3-minute singles that have found a home on classic rock and oldies radio.

Free Music Review: Fine Supplementary Summary
Hit: 4 Stars

The only thing better than obtaining Creedence Clearwater Revival's 'Chronicles' is getting all their original albums first hand. One minor problem with 'Chronicles 2' is that the song sequence is sometimes out of place. This second collection is basically the leftovers of 'Chronicles' 1. But, boy, what leftovers.

As a testament to the greatness of the group, the best songs, including "Born on the Bayou," "Walking on the Water," and "Molina," are formidable indeed. Also essential are hidden gems like "It Came Out of the Sky" and "Pagan Baby". Despite their fame for original songs, the collection provides some fine covers of "Good Golly, Miss Molly," "Hello Mary Lou," and "The Midnight Special". "Cotton Fields" really puts some life in an old traditional song. "Don't Look Now" is a decent variation of "Lookin' Out My Back Door". Although some of the rest isn't always as great. "Wish I Could Hideaway" and "It's Just a Thought" are good, but pale in comparison to the rest, and "Suzie Q, Pt. 2" is a decent, but non-essential, elaboration on the original.

Especially for those without a limitless budget, 'Chronicles 2' is a fine supplementary sampler, continuing the greatness for most of us who can't get enough of CCR or 'Chronicles'.

Free Music Review: A very pleasant surprise.
Hit: 4 Stars

I bought this in addition to Chronicle Vol. 1, because I wanted "Born On The Bayou" & "The Midnight Special." As compared to Vol. 1, more of the songs on Vol. 2 are covers of songs by writers other than John Fogerty, & I was less familiar with the CCR covers of those songs than I was with those written by John Fogerty. I really liked most of their covers. I was also pleasantly surprised to discover a few John Fogerty originals that I didn't know from my youth that were really good. As a true CCR fan, I'm happy I have Vol. 2, but Vol. 1 is more reliable as a general sampling of CCR. Still, I recommend Vol. 2 to anyone who is willing to accept a few (& I don't mean many) songs on a CD that won't really flip their switch mixed in with some truly classic songs.
